Adult refugees who have never been to school have immense difficulties in acquiring a second language and are often taught in ways that are not designed around their learning styles and specific language goals. There is an established need for non-native English speaking adults to learn the language if they live and work in the United States. However, non-profit organizations such as Bethany Christian Services are unsure how best to expose these students in English within an academic structure. The entire school experience, (its rigor, structure, and expectations) is an unfamiliar environment to this demographic of people, so a more specialized kind of instruction is necessary to help them gain the English skills that are needed for survival in this country. This project explores the theories of adult education and second language acquisition in order to devise a means of ESL instruction what will effectively teach this population of learners. Its purpose will be to develop a specialized ESL unit plan to specifically address illiteracy/low-literacy in adult refugee populations who have never gone to school.
