It covers all the things that trainees are not told at university, but desperately need to know once they find themselves teaching full-time! Hazel Bennett - who has herself combined a career in teaching with running a home, bringing up a family and post-graduate study - gives advice on issues as coping with a daunting amount of paperwork, an ever-increasing curriculum load, pressure to improve the school's position on the league tables, and a pupil population who are frequently more concerned about their rights than their education. A must-read for teachers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work Before commencing the work planned out in the following pages, the boys will have had considerable practice in the use of the rule, compasses and set squares, to which should be added that of the drawing board and T-square. They should also understand thoroughly the meaning of plan and elevation, and be able to draw the plan and elevation of simple models. A working acquaintance with scale drawing is also necessary as a preliminary to the study of metal work. All drawing should be executed to as large a scale as possible. As in most Manual Training Centres there is only one forge and one teacher, it is difficult to provide work at the forge for each boy. This difficulty is partially obviated by working certain exercises conjointly, namely, 11 and 12, 18 and 19, and 25 and 26. Similarly exercises 13 and 14 are worked conjointly, because, as a rule, only one set of stocks and dies is supplied. Heavy chipping and surfacing are put late in the course, as this work is exhausting to most boys until their muscles have become hardened by practice in the use of the file. The method of holding the various tools, and detailed instructions for marking out and drawing the exercises contained in this book, are fully illustrated by diagrams in the key to be published shortly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most medical school faculty members are required to teach, the standard medical school curriculum doesn't tell them how to do it well. This book does. An award-winning clinician-teacher, Helen M. Shields has spent her career training future doctors, researchers, and medical school instructors. Here she shares classroom-tested methods for developing, implementing, and evaluating effective curricula for medical students. Shields's five steps emphasize • extensive behind-the-scenes preparation, with a focus on visualizing both one's own performance and the desired student feedback • clear and logical presentations that match the material being taught • controlled exploration of topics through prepared questions and management of group dynamics • reinforcement of important concepts throughout the teaching session • a five-minute summary of take-home points Shields's easy-to-follow guide discusses what teachers should do—and what they should not do. She provides pertinent beginning-of-chapter questions, sample teaching materials, tips for last-minute assignments, and other pearls of wisdom. Shields also describes the methods of dynamic and effective instructors, offers a step-by-step approach to preparation and presentation, and relates proven ways to address a variety of expected and unexpected situations. Innovative and practical, A Medical Teacher's Manual for Success is an essential resource for medical school faculty members who want to teach well.

Book excerpt: Those who teach college students have extensive training in their disciplines, but unlike their counterparts at the high school or elementary school level, they often have surprisingly little instruction in the craft of teaching itself. The Chicago Handbook for Teachers, Second Edition, is an extraordinarily helpful guide for anyone facing the daunting challenge of putting together a course and delivering it successfully. Representing teachers at all stages of their careers, the authors, including distinguished historian Alan Brinkley, offer practical advice for almost any situation a new teacher might face, from preparing a syllabus to managing classroom dynamics. Beginning with a nuts and bolts plan for designing a course, the handbook also explains how to lead a discussion, evaluate your own teaching, give an effective lecture, supervise students' writing and research, create and grade exams, and more. This new edition is thoroughly revised for contemporary concerns, with updated coverage on the use of electronic resources and on the challenge of creating and sustaining an inclusive classroom. A new chapter on science education and new coverage of the distinctive issues faced by adjunct faculty broaden the book’s audience considerably. The addition of sample teaching materials in the appendixes enhances the practical, hands-on focus of the second edition. Its broad scope and wealth of specific tips will make The Chicago Handbook for Teachers useful both as a comprehensive guide for beginning educators and a reference manual for experienced instructors.

In fact, this book is but a transcript of the regular work done by the author in her own school, and no plans have been suggested that cannot be readily accomplished by the average pupil. After the school committee of Boston had added to the course of study for the primary schools, a course in Manual Training, the author was summoned by the committee to give instruction to the primary teachers in the methods to be employed in teaching Modeling in Clay, Paper-cutting and Folding, Stick-laying, etc. The line of instruction was in strict harmony with the course of study, and this book, which is the epitome of her instruction, is issued in response to the demands of many teachers.
