Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover teachers' attitudes and perceptions about multicultural education and the resources they had to support a multicultural curriculum. Teachers from a Southern California elementary school were surveyed. This community is experiencing a high volume of population growth due to many new, affordable track homes and a school system with an excellent reputation. The demographics are changing from primarily whites to including many people from different cultures. The survey was handed to the teachers at a staff meeting and contained a total of 11 questions. The teachers completed the surveys and returned them immediately. Their responses were then cross tabulated using a statistical program. Overall, the teachers had positive feelings about including multicultural education in their curriculum. Newer teachers had the strongest feelings about incorporating multicultural education. Most teachers felt the highest level of support from their peers. Some teachers admitted that they did not know the various cultures of their students. Finally, teachers expressed a need for integrated multicultural lessons for their classrooms. Keywords: multicultural education, culture, curriculum, teachers, attitudes

Prior research on educational equity has largely centered on the development of multicultural education and critical race theoretical approaches, with some studies considering how these theories are best incorporated into teacher preparation programs. However, few studies consider the perspectives of teacher educators within teacher preparation programs. The purpose of this study was to understand the perspectives of teacher educators at Central Valley University (CVU) regarding what pre-service teachers should know, be able to do, and have as a disposition to ensure equity and excellence in Central Valley classrooms. Six teacher educators, three instructors who teach within the teacher education program and three instructors who teach discipline methods courses were interviewed for this qualitative interpretivist study. Data collection included, semi-structured interviews, syllabi, and additional university and college documents. The constant comparative method was used for data analysis. Using Banks’ (2016) Four Approaches to Multicultural Curriculum Reform as the theoretical frame, with the addition of equity consciousness developed by Skrla et al. (2009) and McKenzie and Skrla (2011) the results of this study suggest that teacher educators preparing pre-service teachers at CVU seemed to demonstrate only a surface level perception of what is required to develop equity in the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: It is estimated that by the year 2020, African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American groups will comprise 40% of the population. This implies that we must be equipped to teach students from both genders and various ethnic groups efficiently through educational systems that promote diversity, equality, and empowerment. Due to the teaching force becoming more female and white, while the student population is becoming more diverse, teacher educators and pre-service teachers need to learn and accept that diversity and multicultural education goes beyond celebrating holidays and sampling ethnic dishes. Therefore, it is paramount that teachers increase their awareness about issues related to multicultural education. The purpose of this research study was to examine an education program and its job in promoting and facilitating tactics that embrace multicultural education ideologies.

Book excerpt: Recognizing the responsibility institutions have to prepare teachers for today's diverse classrooms, Vavrus shows us how to incorporate transformative multicultural education into teacher education curriculum, pedagogy, and evaluation. Placing race, racism, antiracism, and democracy at the center of his analyses and recommendation, this volume provides: - Concrete structural suggestions for including transformative multicultural education in higher education and K-12 in-service programs. -A multicultural critique of new NCATE accreditation standards for teacher education programs that offers reconceptualized assessment procedures. -The historical roots of transformative multicultural education that incorporates issues of white privilege and racialized color blindness, anti-racist pedagogy, racial identity among teachers, and critical race theory. - A discussion of globalization that emphasizes its contemporary economic effects on social and educatonal inequities.
