Book excerpt: Even though many pre-service and in-service teacher programs now address information and computer technology, computer- assisted language learning (CALL) teacher education is still reported as inadequate. Why is this? This book elaborates on some of the existing concerns and through deft analysis of longitudinal data begins to piece together a future road map for CALL teacher education. The book adopts a sociocultural approach, based on the principle that teaching (and learning how to teach) is a long term, complex developmental process that operates through participation in social practices that come with the territory. Euline Cutrim Schmid highlights the need for situated and localized learning, pre-service and in-service collaboration and collaborative peer-assisted learning. Above all of this, the book recommends and proves the efficacy of socially aware and professional reflective practice. This is an essential sociolinguistic take on the computer learning revolution.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses the need for a more considered and systematic approach to teacher education and training in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), in all its forms: Technology Enhanced Language Learning, Network-Based Language Learning, Information and Communication Technologies for Language Learning and so on. The 20 chapters of the book are divided into five parts: (1) foundations of teacher education in CALL; (2) CALL degree programs; (3) CALL pre-service courses; (4) CALL in-service projects, courses, and workshops; (5) alternatives to formal CALL training. The chapters cover a broad range of levels, environments, countries, and languages. Rather than simply offering inspired speculation, the chapters provide practical information to readers, reporting on what has actually been done in a wide variety of teacher education programs and courses around the world. In many cases, the chapters describe how programs and courses have evolved, and include either qualitative or quantitative research, or both, to inform the structure of CALL courses, tasks and activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increased awareness among students and teachers about the importance of developing English language skills and communication skills, language laboratories have become an integral part of the paraphernalia for teaching the language in all educational institutions. A Handbook for English Language Laboratories aims to develop students' ability to use the language accurately, appropriately and fluently for one-to-one and one-to-many communication in a variety of contexts. It also briefly introduces them to Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The book is divided into three parts - Computer Assisted Language Learning, The Sound System of English and Communication Skills. Part one deals with the uses of computers and information technology in developing language skills. Part two endeavours to help the students learn the appropriate pronunciation of English. The focus here is mainly on the practical aspects of English phonetics. The information covered in this part, will help in overcoming the mother tongue influence (MTI). In an era of globalization, where you are expected to speak English with global intelligibility, Accent Neutralisation or Accent Reduction has assumed greater importance than ever before. Accent neutralization/ reduction attempts to reduce the mother tongue influence and makes spoken English sound closer to the American or British variety. Part three seeks to help students develop their communication skills. This section also provides practical tips for effective public speaking, preparing resumes, facing interviews, making presentations, participating in group discussions, debates etc. Key topics discusses: - The sound system of English - Accent, rhythm and intonation - Presentation skills - Preparing resumes and facing interviews - Group discussions, debates, role play and public speaking

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: Pass, University of Ulster, language: English, abstract: The perceptions of student teachers on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) remain underexamined in literature. This mixed methods study explored the perceptions of Modern Language (ML) student teachers to CALL at commencement and completion of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in 2020/21. These student teachers were in seven institutions across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It was found that student teachers were less positive about CALL usage at the end of their ITE programmes. Self-directed learning also overtook university education to become the primary channel of CALL knowledge acquisition for student teachers at ITE close. A total of thirty factors were found to influence the CALL behaviours of student teachers. The issue of workload was especially significant in follow-up focus groups. The CALL behaviours of student teachers also diverged from their initial expectations. However, these findings were not a one-size-fits-all for the whole student teacher population. There was evidence of local diversity between and within whole UK jurisdictions. Student teachers collectively suggested twelve recommendations to enhance CALL instruction in Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) courses. This investigation has produced a new and original theoretical framework that depicts the student teacher pathway to CALL adoption. The Student Teacher CAL Acceptance Model (STCAM) has been designed, tested, and refined over the course of my research project.
