Book excerpt: The memories of childhood range from moments of terror to helpless laughter. John Cupis is of small stature but breaks free of "the apron strings" at an early age, especially when the family moves west from Staines to Reading in the autumn of 1944. Here, the harsh environment of a Grammar School education further convinces John Cupis that you must work things out for yourself. This momentous decision is leavened only by the hilarious activities of boyhood. On leaving school Mr. Cupis becomes an engineer apprentice in a North London aircraft factory, a sharp contrast to his erstwhile comfortable middle class background. Here there are moments of deprivation, tragedy and further hilarity. In response to his Mentor, Sir Frederick Handley Page, Cupis learns to fly, giving rise to tense moments and humorous incidents both horrific and exhilarating. When the manipulations of Duncan Sandys MP destroy his Mentor and the company of Handley Page Ltd. has to close down, Cupis is forced to seek his fortune elsewhere in industry. Thus he meets his wife, Jackie. She is a teenage girl who has been adopted from birth by a fishmonger and his wife. Jackie is told by her adopted mother that they wanted a boy but have to "make do" with a girl. An arranged marriage with a Chinese restauranteur is thwarted by John Cupis. Jackie then shows her great courage in a fraught moment in the aircraft that Cupis is flying and he asks Jackie to marry him. Their subsequent life is not easy but they win through to a finality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in a hilarious illustrated non-fiction chapter book series starring a savvy and stylish cockroach who guides the reader through an encounter with a charming -- and dangerous -- predator. Is this hyena drooling for tea and crumpets . . . or for you?! Celeste is a cockroach, and everyone knows that cockroaches are survivors, so who better to give advice on surviving an encounter with a polite predator? High teas are dainty meals with pretty teacups: you nibble tiny cakes, sip milky tea and chit-chat about not-so-important things like why doughnuts have holes and if fish have eyebrows. But Ruby the hyena is loud, ferocious and tends to slober. High-speed gobbling makes good sense in the wild, but it is a definite no-no in the tearoom! And Ruby just happens to be Queen of a very large clan of hungry hyenas. Will high tea be ruined by uninvited guests? Is Ruby peckish for something other than Celeste's famous cream buns? Using her vast knowledge of hyenas, Celeste comes up with lots of strategies to get through high tea in one piece. Many of her suggestions are dangerous, most are absurd, but all are based on true hyena biology and hunting behavior.

Book excerpt: “Powerful, laden with emotion, and smartly written.” —Brandon Sanderson, author of Mistborn and The Way of Kings A brilliant historical fantasy novel from acclaimed author Mary Robinette Kowal featuring the mysterious spirit corps and their heroic work in World War I. Ginger Stuyvesant, an American heiress living in London during World War I, is engaged to Captain Benjamin Harford, an intelligence officer. Ginger is a medium for the Spirit Corps, a special Spiritualist force. Each soldier heading for the front is conditioned to report to the mediums of the Spirit Corps when they die so the Corps can pass instant information about troop movements to military intelligence. Ginger and her fellow mediums contribute a great deal to the war efforts, so long as they pass the information through appropriate channels. While Ben is away at the front, Ginger discovers the presence of a traitor. Without the presence of her fiancé to validate her findings, the top brass thinks she's just imagining things. Even worse, it is clear that the Spirit Corps is now being directly targeted by the German war effort. Left to her own devices, Ginger has to find out how the Germans are targeting the Spirit Corps and stop them. This is a difficult and dangerous task for a woman of that era, but this time both the spirit and the flesh are willing...
