Book Synopsis Taxonomy, Distribution and Ecology of the Freshwater Sponges (Porifera:Spongillidae) and Bryozoans (Ectoprocta) of Eastern Canada by : Anthony Ricciardi
Download or read book Taxonomy, Distribution and Ecology of the Freshwater Sponges (Porifera:Spongillidae) and Bryozoans (Ectoprocta) of Eastern Canada written by Anthony Ricciardi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Specimens of freshwater bryozoans (Ectoprocta) and sponges (Porifera: Spongillidae), two of the most poorly known faunal groups in Canada, were obtained from various locations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. A total of 14 species of bryozoans and 15 species of sponges were identified. In 31 cases, these species were recorded from a province for the first time. Species new to Canada include the bryozoans Lophopodella carteri, Plumatella orbisperma, and Pottsiella erecta, and the sponges Radiospongilla crateriformis, Spongilla aspinosa, and Trochospongilla horrida. The morphology, taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of each species are examined. Several taxonomic revisions are made. Eunapius mackayi and Plumatella orbisperma are redescribed. Spongilla heterosclerifera, considered an endangered species, is shown to be a species mixture. Taxonomic keys to Eastern Canadian species of freshwater bryozoans and sponges are presented. New limits of tolerance to pH, calcium and magnesium levels, and water temperature are established for several species." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates: Keys to Nearctic Fauna, Fourth Edition presents a comprehensive revision and expansion of this trusted professional reference manual and educational textbook—from a single North American tome into a developing multivolume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world. Readers familiar with the first three editions will welcome this new volume. The series, now entitled Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates, (edited by J.H. Thorp), began with Volume I: Ecology and General Biology, (edited by J.H. Thorp and D.C. Rogers). It now continues in Volume II with taxonomic coverage of inland water invertebrates of the Nearctic zoogeographic region. As in previous editions, all volumes of the fourth edition are designed for multiple uses and levels of expertise by professionals in universities, government agencies, and private companies, as well as by undergraduate and graduate students. Features zoogeographic coverage for all of North America, south to the general area of the Tropic of Cancer, and Greenland and Bermuda Provides keys to families of freshwater insects Provides keys to all other inland water invertebrates at the taxonomic level appropriate for the current scientific knowledge Includes multiple taxonomic keys in each chapter that progress from higher to lower taxonomic levels, thereby allowing users to work up to their level of need and expertise Presents additional material in each chapter on group introduction, limitations to the keys, terminology and morphology, material preparation and preservation, and references
Book Synopsis Aspects of Sponge Biology by : Frederick Harrison
Download or read book Aspects of Sponge Biology written by Frederick Harrison and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aspects of Sponge Biology is the result of a symposium about sponge biology held in Albany, New York in May 1975. The symposium not only presents investigations, but also problem areas in the field of sponge biology. This book therefore shows that sponges are a very challenging and untouched subject area for future studies. This book is divided into three major parts, wherein the first part introduces and discusses sponge biology. The introduction and discussion include sponge biology principles, perspectives, and problems. The next two parts discuss cell and development biology, taxonomy, and ecology. Part 2 deals with several topics of the cellular aspect, including an analysis of reproduction in sponge populations and cytochemical studies of connective tissues in sponges. This part also looks into the cytological abnormalities in various normal and transformed cell lines. Part 3 describes the different types of sponge in their various habitats. Sponge feeding mechanisms, ecological factors controlling sponge distribution, and zoogeography of Brazilian marine Demospongiae are also discussed in this part. This book will be of important value to biology students and teachers. Specialists including zoologists, ecologists, comparative physiologists, and biologists will also benefit from this book.

Book Synopsis Systema Porifera by : John N.A. Hooper
Download or read book Systema Porifera written by John N.A. Hooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research whilst compiling this book has uncovered a fauna about twice the size as that previously published in the literature and consequently Systema Porifera revises and stabilizes the systematics of the phylum to accommodate this new knowledge in a contemporary framework. Practical tools (key illustrations, descriptions of character) are provided to facilitate the assignment of approximately 680 extant and 100 fossil genera. Systema Porifera is unique making sponge taxonomy widely available at the practical level of classification (genera, families, order). It is a taxonomic revision of sponges and spongiomorphis (such as sphinctozoans and archaeocyathans) based on re-evaluation of type materials and evidence. It is also a practical guide to sponge identification providing descriptions and illustrations of characters and interpretation of their importance to systematics. Systema Porifera addresses many long standing nomenclatural problems and provides a sound baseline for future debate on sponges and their place in time and space. Systema Porifera describes 3 classes, 7 subclasses, 24 orders, 127 families and 682 valid genera of extant sponges (with over 1600 nominal generic names and an additional 500 invalid names treated). Treatment of the fossil fauna is less comprehensive or critical, although 6 classes, 30 orders, 245 families and 998 fossil genera are mentioned. Keys to all recent and many fossil taxa are provided.
