Book excerpt: We have searched for the radiative leptonic tau decays[tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e] and[tau][yields][mu]e[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub[mu]] using 3.60 fb[sup -1] of data collected by the CLEO-II experiment at CESR. We present a first observation of the[tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e] process. For this channel we measure the branching fraction B([tau][yields] ee[sup+]e[sup -][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub e])= (2.8[+-] 1.4[+-] 0.4) x 10[sup -5]. An upper limit is established for the second channel: B([tau][yields][mu]e[sup+][nu][sub[tau]][nu][sub[mu]])

We use (7.56 +/- 0.15) fb −1 of data collected with the CLEO III detector at the Y (4S) resonance, which corresponds to a total of (6.90 +/- 0.14) x 106 [tau]-pairs. Using both a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and measurement of specific ionization energy loss (dE/dx) for particle identification, we report the first observation of the decay [tau]− [right arrow] K−[omega][tau neutrino]. We report the first statistically significant measurements of the branching fractions for [tau]− [right arrow] K−[pi][pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino] (excluding K0), [tau]− [right arrow] K−K[pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino] and the first published upper limit for [tau]− [right arrow] K−K+K−[pi]0[tau neutrino]. We also measure branching fractions for the decays, [tau]− [right arrow] h−[omega][tau neutrino], [tau]− [right arrow] [pi]−[omega][tau neutrino], [tau]− [right arrow] h−h+h−[pi]0[tau neutrino], and [tau]− [right arrow] [pi]−[pi]+[pi]−[pi]0[tau neutrino].

Book excerpt: A search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor violating decay of the [tau] lepton into three charged leptons has been performed using an integrated luminosity of 468 fb−1 collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. In all six decay modes considered, the numbers of events found in data are compatible with the background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (1.8-3.3) x 10−8 at 90% confidence level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as various searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the SM (BSM). The first part of the thesis details the search for an SM Higgs boson decaying to taus, and produced by gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, or associated production with a vector boson, leading to evidence for decays of the Higgs boson to taus. In turn, the second part highlights several searches for an extended scalar sector, with scalar boson decays to taus. In all of the analyses presented, at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of taus. The results draw on data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector during proton–proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle physics (also high energy physics) is the branch of physics that studies the nature of the particles that constitute matter and radiation. Although the word "e;particle"e; can refer to various types of very small objects "e;particle physics"e; usually investigates the irreducibly smallest detectable particles and the fundamental interactions necessary to explain their behaviour. By our current understanding, these elementary particles are excitations of the quantum fields that also govern their interactions. The currently dominant theory explaining these fundamental particles and fields, along with their dynamics, is called the Standard Model. Thus, modern particle physics generally investigates the Standard Model and its various possible extensions, e.g. to the newest "e;known"e; particle, the Higgs boson, or even to the oldest known force field, gravity. Written in a clear pedagogic style by active researchers, this book will prepare a beginner to work in the field and at the same time will also provide useful reference material for active researchers.

Its purpose is to gather the experts on tau lepton physics to examine the current understanding of the tau lepton physics and to assess future prospects. A particular emphasis of the Workshop was a detailed examination of the '1-prong problem': the discrepancy between the inclusive measurement of one-charged-particle decay branching ratio and the sum of the exclusive decays. The Workshop also stimulated new ideas on tests of the Standard Model using the third generation lepton and assessed the future prospects of the lepton physics.

Book excerpt: Neutrinoless 3-prong tau lepton decays into a charged lepton and either two all channels the numbers of events found are compatible with background an update of a previous study and the addition of six decay channels. In charged particles or one neutral meson have been searched for using 4.79 fb−1 estimates and branching fraction upper limits are set for 28 different decay modes. These limits are either more stringent than those set previously or of data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. This analysis represents represent the first attempt to find these decays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded text provides a comprehensive introduction to modern particle physics. Extensively rewritten and updated, this 4th edition includes developments in elementary particle physics, as well as its connections with cosmology and astrophysics. As in previous editions, the balance between experiment and theory is continually emphasised. The stress is on the phenomenological approach and basic theoretical concepts rather than rigorous mathematical detail. Short descriptions are given of some of the key experiments in the field, and how they have influenced our thinking. Although most of the material is presented in the context of the Standard Model of quarks and leptons, the shortcomings of this model and new physics beyond its compass (such as supersymmetry, neutrino mass and oscillations, GUTs and superstrings) are also discussed. The text includes many problems and a detailed and annotated further reading list.

Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix. While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work.

Book excerpt: The properties of the electron, muon, tau, and their neutrinos are reviewed. Three discrepancies in our understanding of those properties are discussed: the lifetime of orthopositronium, the mass spectra of ee− pairs produced in heavy ion collisions, and the 1-charged particle modes problem in tau decays. The review concludes with a discussion of what we need to learn about the tau and the consequent need for a tau-charm factory. 68 refs., 7 figs., 8 tabs.
