Book excerpt: This is a true story of life and love in some of the wildest and most isolated places on earth - the lightstations of Bass Strait and Tasmania. Before their automation, Australia's remote island and onshore lights were manned by lightkeepers and their families. Foul weather, misadventure and supply problems were offset by incredible natural beauty, camaraderie and a unique lifestyle that no longer exists in the modern world. Covering twenty-two years from 1967 to 1989 and touching upon six lightstations and nine lighthouses Living with Jezebel takes us from the age of kerosene lamps to solar power, providing historical insight as well as a rollicking good yarn of one family'slife of adventure, love, heartbreak and endurance.Marlene Levings (née Harper) was born into a large, boisterous Launceston family in 1933. In 1964 she met the love of her life, Allen Levings. They married in 1967 and began a life on remote Tasmanian lightstations. Two children and many adventures later, Marlene was appointed light keeper on King Island. Following retirement from the service in 1989, Marlene and Allen moved to Swansea, Tasmania, where Marlene still lives today.

There is 'history and heritage' everywhere...around every corner. In many places there remain numerous buildings particularly sandstone buildings and other relics of times past. Many communities still exist in relative isolation even today. but there is more. According to ancestry organisation websites "Based on the records, demographics, birth rates, census data and immigration patterns, the sites estimated 22 per cent of living Australians had a convict ancestor." Around 50% of early convicts arrived via Van Diemen's Land/Tasmania. In other words about 11 per cent of living Australians [or around 5 million] have a Tasmanian family history connection. Tasmania's Vanishing Towns describes hundreds of towns, villages, communities and is deal for the real or virtual traveller to Tasmania. easy to read, comprehensive yet concise with hundreds of illustrations.

Book excerpt: One of CrimeReads Most Anticipated Books of the Year! "This literary thriller paints as vivid a landscape as any book coming out this summer...Gee creates a lush, tantalizing world that readers will want to travel into deeper and deeper."—CrimeReads Celia Lily is rich, beautiful, and admired. She’s also missing. And the search for the glamorous socialite is about to expose all the dark, dirty secrets of Vanishing Falls… Deep within the lush Tasmanian rainforest is the remote town of Vanishing Falls, a place with a storied past. The town’s showpiece, built in the 1800s, is its Calendar House—currently occupied by Jack Lily, a prominent art collector and landowner; his wife, Celia; and their four daughters. The elaborate, eccentrically designed mansion houses one masterpiece and 52 rooms—and Celia Lily isn’t in any of them. She has vanished without a trace.… Joelle Smithton knows that a few folks in Vanishing Falls believe that she’s simple-minded. It’s true that Joelle’s brain works a little differently—a legacy of shocking childhood trauma. But Joelle sees far more than most people realize, and remembers details that others cast away. For instance, she knows that Celia’s husband, Jack, has connections to unsavory local characters whom he’s desperate to keep hidden. He’s not the only one in town with something to conceal. Even Joelle’s own husband, Brian, a butcher, is acting suspiciously. While the police flounder, unable to find Celia, Joelle is gradually parsing the truth from the gossip she hears and from the simple gestures and statements that can unwittingly reveal so much. Just as the water from the falls disappears into the ground, gushing away through subterranean creeks, the secrets in Vanishing Falls are pulsing through the town, about to converge. And when they do, Joelle must summon the courage to reveal what really happened to Celia, even if it means exposing her own past…

If you ask most folk on mainland Australia, who have never been lucky to have vacationed in Tasmania, what they know about 'The Apple Isle' they will say Well Apples for one! The 'Annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is an incredible spectacle. There is no more exhilarating sight than watching the leading craft surging and tacking nay, battling up the Derwent into Hobart. My Wife Jenny & I have been lucky enough to have witnessed this event. This is going to seem akin to an alcohol plug. But I think that it should be mentioned simply to surprise you as it did me. There are no less than 13, yes 13 boutique Whisky distilleries in and around Hobart! I was amazed. I was always aware of two lovely Beers. Brewed at Cascade, & James Boags. A great drop, apparently to do with the local spring water. From field to bottle Tasmania's "locavore" movement - celebrating produce grown or farmed nearby - extends to its distilleries. Niall Maurici is head bartender at Hobart's Glass House and ambassador for the fine apple brandy and spirits of the Charles Oates Distillery in Huon Valley's Willie Smith's Apple Shed. I attempted for this to NOT be a Pub crawl, I reiterate, that it is purely the revelation that all of this boozy industry exists in Hobart. I have not even mentioned the Ciders! I personally, when I dream of Tasmania, Remember when the Bridge was built, (And partly & tragically for some, bashed down by a ship)The Shot tower, the first Casino in Australia. (Jerry Lewis headlined the first week) The ponds of Plenty, where all of the beautiful Trout in the whole of Australia began life near Hobart. Etc, I could nearly fill another book. I never actually touched on Fishing for Trout, among other edible delights. The Crayfish are to die for, here I go back into the Travelogue!! If you are lucky enough to visit, You Will Get Hooked also. Nathan E Grant
