Book Synopsis Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man by : John F. Kasson
Download or read book Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man written by John F. Kasson and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2002-07-02 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable new work from one of our premier historians In his exciting new book, John F. Kasson examines the signs of crisis in American life a century ago, signs that new forces of modernity were affecting men's sense of who and what they really were. When the Prussian-born Eugene Sandow, an international vaudeville star and bodybuilder, toured the United States in the 1890s, Florenz Ziegfeld cannily presented him as the "Perfect Man," representing both an ancient ideal of manhood and a modern commodity extolling self-development and self-fulfillment. Then, when Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan swung down a vine into the public eye in 1912, the fantasy of a perfect white Anglo-Saxon male was taken further, escaping the confines of civilization but reasserting its values, beating his chest and bellowing his triumph to the world. With Harry Houdini, the dream of escape was literally embodied in spectacular performances in which he triumphed over every kind of threat to masculine integrity -- bondage, imprisonment, insanity, and death. Kasson's liberally illustrated and persuasively argued study analyzes the themes linking these figures and places them in their rich historical and cultural context. Concern with the white male body -- with exhibiting it and with the perils to it --reached a climax in World War I, he suggests, and continues with us today.

Tarzan, Jane and their son Korak find an orphaned lion club, which Tarzan decides to take home and train. However when news gets out of Tarzan's discovery of the treasure chamber in the lost city, plots are concocted to try and steal his fortune. After he is captured and held captive by thieves, the race is on for him to try and save the gold and the diamonds. Popularized by Disney's animated adventure film from 1999, ́Tarzan ́ is Edgar Rice Burroughs’ much-beloved series of a child who is brought up by apes in the lush African jungle. Burroughs ́ novels about the feral ape-man in the loincloth cover his adventures in the jungle, his confrontations with civilization, and his kinship with both apes and humans. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author, best known for his novel ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ (1914) and its sequels as well as the Barsoom series. During World War II, he was one of the oldest U.S war correspondents.

Book excerpt: 1923 (the first) edition, illustrated"Tarzan and the Golden Lion" is an adventure novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the ninth in his series of books about the title character Tarzan. It was first published as a seven part serial in a weekly beginning in December 1922; and then as a complete novel on March 24, 1923.The story is about Clayton family, Tarzan, Jane Porter and their son Korak. They find an orphaned lion cub, which Tarzan takes home and trains. A villain had managed to copy the map of the lost city of Opar. Two years passed since the Clayton family picked up their lion cub Tarzan's estate had become financially depleted so he returns to Opar. He meets villain's party and ends up in the hands of the Oparians. Queen La felt she had nothing to lose by escaping with Tarzan through the only unguarded route-a path to the legendary valley of diamonds, from which no one had ever returned. There, Tarzan found a race of humans who were little better than animals in intelligence, being enslaved by a race of intelligent gorillas. With the help of his golden lion Jad-bal-ja, Tarzan used the natives to restore La to power. Tarzan eventually confronts the villains and, as always, wins.

Drugged and helpless, he was delivered into the hands of the dreadful priests of Opar, last bastion of ancient Atlantis. La, High Priestess of the Flaming God, had saved him once again, driven by her hopeless love for the ape-man. But now she was betrayed and threatened by her people. To save her, Tarzan fled with her into the legendary Valley of Diamonds, while Jad-bal-ja, his faithful golden lion, followed. Ahead lay a land where savage gorillas ruled over servile men. And behind, Estaban Miranda - who looked exactly like Tarzan - plotted further treachery. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
