The splen did manhood of the Old North State manifested itself time and again on the field of battle and on the high seas: How many times a North Carolinian's name went down into imper ishable fame for deeds of valor and self sacrifice in behalf of the greatest cause of all time. The women at home, God bless them, spurred them on to high purpose, fired their souls with memories of their illustrious ancestors in the days of '64 and afforded them that warmth of love and trust and faith that kept them from doing not less than the best that was in them. Many of our women went overseas as nurses, and canteen workers, and one is sure that their very presence was a blessing to our men. At home in the great drives for humane institutions they surpassed themselves in the good they accomplished. Within the covers of this book are presented symposiums of many who gave of themselves and of their substance that the world might be made safe to live in and that the despots of Europe might be erased from the maps of the future generations. When one views the war in retrospection it is then that these sketches gain the significance that give them the place in every North Carolina home that they deserve. There is doubtless in this book mention of some loved one, set forth in all truthfulness, that gives. Him or her a little firmer hold on our heart. The publishers have spent considerable time, money and effort in bringing out this book, but the compensation that is theirs in feeling that they have produced a work worth while is worth more than the material gain to be derived from their labors. Leon Louis, at the age of nineteen, signed up to join the First North Carolina Regiment in 1861 and remained with them for six months before being mustered into the Fifty-Third North Carolina Regiment until the end of the war. He was not involved in strategic discussions or decisions but he was one of the many thousands who unquestioningly put their lives on the line for the cause of the confederacy. He reveals in stark prose the day to day drudgery of the war, from cutting down trees for the preparation of defences to creating bedding from collected leaves, which he described as 'a bed fit for a king or a Confederate soldier.' Louis saw conflict at number of occasions throughout the war including the Battle of the Wilderness where he was captured by the Union army. He spent the rest of the war in prison and details his life in those camps, but also gives details of the continuing action of the Fifty-Third Regiment from other sources until the end of the war. Also included in Leon's account are details of all the men who fought in the two regiments that he served with. Diary of a Tar Heel Confederate provides an insight into the life of an ordinary soldier fighting for the South during the American Civil War. After the War Leon was actively involved in the organization "United Confederate Veterans" in which he became a major. This diary was published in 1913 and he died in 1919. There is a monument in Charlotte, North Carolina, honoring him and the twelve other Jewish Confederate soldiers who are buried in the Hebrew Cemetery.

The bitterness and rancor resulting from the collapse of the Confederacy spurred an ongoing cycle of hostility and bloodshed that made the Reconstruction period a violent era of transition. The violence was so pervasive that the federal government deployed units of the U.S. Army in North Carolina and other southern states to maintain law and order and protect blacks and Unionists. Bluecoats and Tar Heels: Soldiers and Civilians in Reconstruction North Carolina tells the story of the army’s twelve-year occupation of North Carolina, a time of political instability and social unrest. Author Mark Bradley details the complex interaction between the federal soldiers and the North Carolina civilians during this tumultuous period. The federal troops attempted an impossible juggling act: protecting the social and political rights of the newly freed black North Carolinians while conciliating their former enemies, the ex-Confederates. The officers sought to minimize violence and unrest during the lengthy transition from war to peace, but they ultimately proved far more successful in promoting sectional reconciliation than in protecting the freedpeople. Bradley’s exhaustive study examines the military efforts to stabilize the region in the face of opposition from both ordinary citizens and dangerous outlaws such as the Regulators and the Ku Klux Klan. By 1872, the widespread, organized violence that had plagued North Carolina since the close of the war had ceased, enabling the bluecoats and the ex-Confederates to participate in public rituals and social events that served as symbols of sectional reconciliation. This rapprochement has been largely forgotten, lost amidst the postbellum barrage of Lost Cause rhetoric, causing many historians to believe that the process of national reunion did not begin until after Reconstruction. Rectifying this misconception, Bluecoats and Tar Heels illuminates the U.S. Army’s significant role in an understudied aspect of Civil War reconciliation.
