Book Synopsis Uncanny Fairy Tales by : Francesca Arnavas
Download or read book Uncanny Fairy Tales written by Francesca Arnavas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are fairy tales that surprise, destabilise, or even shock us: these are uncanny fairy tales that manipulate familiar stories in creative and bewildering ways in order to express new meanings. This work analyses these tales, basing its approach on a reformulation of Freud’s concept of the uncanny. Through a cognitive outlook the employed theoretical framework provides new perspectives on the study of experimental literary fairy tales. Considering English-language literature, complex and unsettling reinterpretations of the fairy-tale discourse began to appear during the Victorian Age, later resurfacing as a postmodern trend. This research individuates uncanny-related narrative techniques and cognitive responses as means to decodify and explore these tales, and as ways to discover unseen connections between Victorian and postmodern texts. The new theorisation of the uncanny is linked with three subconcepts: mirror, hybridity, and wonder, which function as tools to describe and investigate the cognitive and emotional entanglements characterising enigmatic and disorienting fairy tales.

Book Synopsis Pagan Portals - Celtic Fairies in North America by : Morgan Daimler
Download or read book Pagan Portals - Celtic Fairies in North America written by Morgan Daimler and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the question of whether Celtic cultural fairies can be found in North America by exploring folklore across the last four hundred years through today. Stories of belief and personal encounters from Canada, the US, and Mexico show the flexibility of fairy belief and the way that these beings and ideas adapt to new places and times as they are carried along with the people who believe in them. Perfect for anyone who ever wondered if Celtic fairies can be found outside of Europe, what those appearances may be like, and what people have believed and do believe about fairies in diasporic communities. Fairy beliefs survived thousands of years of attempted suppression by religious groups. Celtic Fairies in North America shows that they survived and adapted to emigration, immigration, and the influences of popular culture.
Book Synopsis The Complete Fairy Tales by : George MacDonald
Download or read book The Complete Fairy Tales written by George MacDonald and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald occupied a major position in the intellectual life of his Victorian contemporaries. This volume brings together all eleven of his shorter fairy stories as well as his essay "The Fantastic Imagination". The subjects are those of traditional fantasy: good and wicked fairies, children embarking on elaborate quests, and journeys into unsettling dreamworlds. Within this familiar imaginative landscape, his children's stories were profoundly experimental, questioning the association of childhood with purity and innocence, and the need to separate fairy tale wonder from adult scepticism and disbelief.

Soon Ben found himself imprisoned within the gloom of the Tangle Box, lost in its mists and its labyrinthine ways. The only one who could free Ben from the Tangle Box was the lady Willow. But she had disappeared, was gone from Landover on a mysterious mission of her own. . . .
