Book Synopsis Talking Machine West by : Michael A. Amundson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many associate early western music with the likes of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, but America’s first western music craze predates these “singing cowboys” by decades. Written by Tin Pan Alley songsters in the era before radio, the first popular cowboy and Indian songs circulated as piano sheet music and as cylinder and disc recordings played on wind-up talking machines. The colorful fantasies of western life depicted in these songs capitalized on popular fascination with the West stoked by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows, Owen Wister’s novel The Virginian, and Edwin S. Porter’s film The Great Train Robbery. The talking machine music industry, centered in New York City, used state-of-the-art recording and printing technology to produce and advertise songs about the American West. Talking Machine West brings together for the first time the variety of cowboy, cowgirl, and Indian music recorded and sold for mass consumption between 1902 and 1918. In the book’s introductory chapters, Michael A. Amundson explains how this music reflected the nostalgic passing of the Indian and the frontier while incorporating modern ragtime music and the racial attitudes of Jim Crow America. Hardly Old West ditties, the songs gave voice to changing ideas about Indians and assimilation, cowboys, the frontier, the rise of the New Woman, and ethnic and racial equality. In the book’s second part, a chronological catalogue of fifty-four western recordings provides the full lyrics and history of each song and reproduces in full color the cover art of extant period sheet music. Each entry also describes the song’s composer(s), lyricist(s), and sheet music illustrator and directs readers to online digitized recordings of each song. Gorgeously illustrated throughout, this book is as entertaining as it is informative, offering the first comprehensive account of popular western recorded music in its earliest form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Talking Machine World, Vol. 19: For the Makers and Sellers of Talking Machines; July 15, 1923 A representative of The World who recently went out into the territory surrounding the metropolitan district for the specific purpose of finding out what the dealers are doing to stimulate business discovered some surprising things. In'one town, for example, where there are -six dealers handling talking machines and records, questioning disclosed the fact that only one merchant was making any effort to get business. Think of it, one out of six! The other five were doing nothing whatsoever to stimulate trade. They-were so firmly con vinced that selling talking machines and records in the Summer months was an impossibility that they simply laid down on the job. The other and more progressive merchant is mak ing an intensive effort to get business through the canvassing route and, while his sales from this work are by no means startling, they are sufficiently frequent to warrant the continuation of the campaign throughout the Summer. At any rate, it is much better to have the salesmen out trying to dig up_a' few sales than to have them get rusty sitting in the store doing nothing, and, furthermore, even if sales are noticeable by their absence, the very fact that the salesmen have been out visiting the people in the community should be productive of a good many live prospects who can be sold at a more favorable time, say the early Fall. Book Synopsis The Soul of A New Machine by : Tracy Kidder
Download or read book The Soul of A New Machine written by Tracy Kidder and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracy Kidder's "riveting" (Washington Post) story of one company's efforts to bring a new microcomputer to market won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and has become essential reading for understanding the history of the American tech industry. Computers have changed since 1981, when The Soul of a New Machine first examined the culture of the computer revolution. What has not changed is the feverish pace of the high-tech industry, the go-for-broke approach to business that has caused so many computer companies to win big (or go belly up), and the cult of pursuing mind-bending technological innovations. The Soul of a New Machine is an essential chapter in the history of the machine that revolutionized the world in the twentieth century. "Fascinating...A surprisingly gripping account of people at work." --Wall Street Journal
