Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much more than just a tale of sailing against mountainous seas, but a book with every aspect of sailing and motor boating, in many parts of the world. It illustrates how times have changed to the extent the stories are never to be repeated. Providing a more permanent record, it tells how in post-war Britain, we developed a system of teaching and testing recreational users of marine craft of every description. This has now been copied in almost every country with recreational waterborne sports, including a UK approved sailing school in the USA. If all that sounds a mighty bit boring, be assured it has ten most unusual stories with excitement, including projects in China and Nigeria. There are tales of law-breaking villains afloat, and you won't want to put the book down. Looking for a present for a sea-loving friend? Look no further.

Book excerpt: J. R. D. ‘Bob’ Braham was Britain’s most-decorated fighter pilot and one of the most successful fighter pilots of World War II. Joining the RAF in 1938 at the age of 18, he was posted to No. 29 Squadron at Debdon, where he learned to fly the Hawker Hurricane and Bristol Blenheim. By 1939, the squadron had become a specialised night fighting unit and Braham gained his first victory in August 1940. From that point on, he was constantly in action. Famed for his individual night-time intruder sorties, he also took part in the Peenemiinde raid, the Battle of Britain, and the fight against the V1s and V2s during the Blitz. In 1943, battle fatigued, he moved into an operational role but continued to fly operations until June 1944 when he was shot down and captured. Having completed 316 missions, he spent the next eleven months as a Prisoner of War, and was finally liberated in May 1945. With 29 confirmed combat victories, Braham achieved more success in night fighting than almost any other RAF pilot and was awarded the triple Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), the triple Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Air Force Cross (AFC). Told in his own words, with all the spirit and dynamism for which he was known as a pilot, this is Braham’s extraordinary story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1940. Britain stands alone against Nazi Germany. Only the RAF can protect Britain from falling to the Germans.'Scramble' is the thrilling story of the epic battle that turned the tide of Nazi invasion in the summer of 1940. In more than 450 first-hand accounts, combatants, civilians, politicians, journalists and others who were part of the day-to-day heroism that was England's finest hour tell a tale of war from an individual perspective. And what a revealing tale it is -- of the shortages of every kind, with groundcrew racing against time to get the battered planes operational, to the tactical battles and controversies revealed by Air Ministry papers.Above all, it evokes the terror, rage and frustration of Britain besieged, and the spirit which held it all together: the courage to live to fight another day. Praise for 'Scramble''We now have an accurate account It is the first one to get it right'. -- Group Captain Dennis David'Deftly combining interviews, speeches, news reports, military communications and occasional unobtrusive narrative, Gelb presents a many-sided picture of war that reflects the feeling of the battle' -- New York TimesPraise for 'Dunkirk'"Norman Gelb demonstrates in Dunkirk how productive it is to focus on an individual operation or battle ... Dunkirk is both a good adventure read and an instructive case study yielding modern lessons." -- John Lehman, Former Secretary of the Navy, The Wall Street Journal"Norman Gelb finds fresh angles ... Dunkirk stands as an exemplar of the perils of vacillation and the possibilities of action." -- The New York Times Book Review "Mr. Gelb has excavated beneath surface events, delved into political and psychological factors, and produced an intelligent, fast-moving narrative." -- Professor Arnold Ages, Baltimore Sun "Vivid and comprehensive ... Absorbing ... Sets a high standard for other reconstructions" -- Kirkus Reviews Norman Gelb (b.1929) was born in New York and is the author of seven highly acclaimed books, including 'The Berlin Wall', 'Dunkirk', and 'Less Than Glory'. He was, for many years, correspondent for the Mutual Broadcasting System, first in Berlin and then in London. He is currently the London correspondent for New Leader magazine.

Book excerpt: A fully illustrated account of Middle East Command’s strike force as told by its pilots and airmen, from the author of Hunters Over Arabia. After two years servicing Vampire trainers at the RAF’s Central Flying School, Ray Deacon left Little Rissington and joined thirty fellow airmen for a voyage out to Aden aboard HMT Nevassa on her last sailing as a troopship. Posted to 8 Squadron at RAF Khormaksar, he spent the next two years living and working in the torrid heat of this desert outpost. It had its compensations, however—the opportunity not only to experience life on a busy front-line operational squadron while working on ground attack and fighter reconnaissance versions of the Hawker Hunter, but to savor the delights of a trip in aeronautical engineer Sydney Camm’s most versatile aircraft topping his list. In addition to defending the skies above Aden and its Protectorates, Middle East Command expended a large proportion of its energy supporting army activities in the mountains of the Aden hinterland: dropping supplies, transporting personnel between posts, and in the case of the Hunter squadrons, attacking dissident targets and patrolling the border with Yemen. It was against this background that Deacon wrote his first book on RAF Middle East Command operations, Hunters over Arabia. Tales from the Frontline: Middle East Hunters is a fully illustrated companion volume that comprises anecdotes, stories, and experiences of life on the Hunter squadrons as told by the pilots and airmen who flew and maintained the Hunter during its twelve-year tenure in Arabia.

Book excerpt: Summer 1940, and the Battle of Britain is about to begin. After his time in France and the nightmare of Dunkirk, Sergeant George Yeoman of No. 505 Squadron R.A.F. no longer has any illusions about the war he is fighting. Those months' service have left Yeoman a battle-wearied flying ace, but if it is rest he's after then he is sorely mistaken. His commission finally through, Yeoman finds himself presented with new responsibilities and challenges when he is temporarily attached to a Polish fighter squadron. Meanwhile Lieutenant Joachim Richter, Yeoman's great adversary and opposite number in the Luftwaffe, is readying his men for the storm to come. Hurled across the Channel, the Luftwaffe begins to pound away at the defences, and with no reserves left the Few are all that stands between Britain and defeat. Squadron Scramble is a classic adventure story of the Second World War in the air. Robert Jackson (b. 1941) is a prolific author of military and aviation history, having become a full time writer in 1969. As an active serviceman in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve he flew a wide range of aircraft, ranging from jets to gliders. Squadron Scramble is the second book in the George Yeoman series.
