Book excerpt: In this rich, shadowy, glittering anthology edited by Sharma Shields and Maya Jewell Zeller , a multitude of Northwest writers share their singular stories, essays, and poems that center what Shields calls "the literature of despair." These pages confront what is difficult in life with extraordinary precision and grace: In Beth Piatote's story "Secondary Infection," a Yakama auntie narrates the undoing of a lonely woman; in the essay "There Is No Story Until It Happens to You," Richard Fifield writes about a devastating car crash in the remote Montana northlands of his youth; in his series of poems, "During the Pandemic," Rick Barot reflects on fear, isolation, and hope as quarantine descends; in her visual poem, "The Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbit: An Auto-Elegy," artist Mita Mahato mourns the decline of a fragile species and the terrors of human impact on the environment. In works that span themes from colonialism to environmentalism, from divorce to disease, from toxic masculinity to a loss of faith, the writers here unflinchingly address what makes us vulnerable, what makes us complex, what cleaves us and what connects us. As Zeller writes in the book's introduction, this ambitious anthology pushes us to "learn, memorize, and recite the songs sung by these regional voices, mapping us into a communal root system of evergreen selves."

Book excerpt: Spanning 200 years, Northwest Passages brings together thoughts on the region and its people from such notable writers and personalities as George Vancouver, Chief Seattle, Rudyard Kipling, Raymond Carver, Mary McCarthy, Jack Kerouac, and Sallie Tisdale. Northwesterners, surmises editor Bruce Barcott, are loners and individualists. The lives and writings of these people are inextricably tied to the land and its natural forces. Through historical and contemporary fiction, essays, poetry, and journals, Northwest Passages reveals the underlying spirit that shapes the Northwest identity, and the beauty of both its inner and outer landscapes.

Book excerpt: Based on a popular Northwest Coast Native tale, this book recounts the story of Eagle Boy. Born an orphan, the title character grows up to love eagles, despite the fact that the people of his tribe distrust eagles. In return he is ridiculed and made an outcast. One year, the tribe has difficulty hunting and fishing, and must depart their land. With not enough room in their boats, Eagle Boy is left behind. He is saved from starvation by the eagles he loves, and using their assistance saves his starving tribe, who have not been able to find a fertile place to live since their departure. The gorgeous illustrations and tales of adventures and bald eagles will thrill children, while also instructing them about individualism and humanity, as well as Northwest Coast Native life. This is a paperback edition of a pre-existing hardcover book originally published in 2000.

Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This reissue of an extremely rare collection, first published anonymously in Boston in 1830, rescues from undeserved oblivion, a story-teller rivaling James Fenimore Cooper.William Joseph Snelling (1803-48), son of Colonel Josiah Snelling, for whom Fort Snelling was named, spent seven years of the 1820's among the Indians in the territory now occupied by Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. As an outgrowth of his experience, he wrote Tales of the Northwest, subtitled "Tales of Indian Life and Character by a Resident beyond the Frontier." This was the first work of fiction to deal with the Northwest and one of the earliest short story collections published in America."In 1830 no American save Cooper wrote better narrative than Snelling at his peak," says John T. Flanagan, who made an extensive study of the life and writings of Snelling and who writes the Introduction to this second edition of Tales of the Northwest. The original University of Minnesota Press edition was selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts to be exhibited as one of the "Fifty Best Books" of 1936.

First published in Weird Tales in the early 1930s, C.L. Moore’s Northwest Smith stories, especially “Shambleau,” were hailed as some of the most imaginative and vivid science fiction stories ever to come out of the golden age of sci-fi. At a time when women were heavily underrepresented in the genre, Moore was among the first to gain critical and popular acclaim, and decades later was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Northwest Smith, now recognized by many as the archetypal space smuggler and gunslinger, is an adventurer in the classic sense of the word, and these thirteen stories chronicle the bizarre dangers, interstellar wonders, and titillating romances that captured the imagination of a generation.
