Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Vander Meer was just eighteen years old when he set out on his own to explore the northern wilderness of Ontario. Winter would start in just a week, and there was a camp to build, traps to set, and food and furs to collect. To survive, he needed to call upon all his knowledge because the closest point of civilization was more than twenty miles away. Now, years later, he still looks back upon his time as a teenager in the woods with wonder. He had the chance to walk the trails and paddle the lakes as he experienced the excitement of eluding several brushes with death. Jump into a dream and experience the beauty, danger, and excitement that a trapper enjoys during his daily routines in The Call of the Wilderness. Authors note: Thank you to Caitlyn Vander Meer for the great job of editing this book. It was more work than you expected. I guess my ninth grade grammar was misplaced somewhere over the last thirty-eight years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of Trails in the Far North is a compilation of the time Mike Potts was blessed to follow his vision of the "free" life in the far north - Alaska. A straightforward telling of life in the frontier from 1968 to 1989, Mike takes us through his trials and errors in learning to survive in a wilderness that can be both beautiful and brutal, with temperatures as low as 60 below and summers only three months long. When Mike first arrived in Alaska he didn't know much about wilderness living, but he kept his eyes and ears open, listened when the Indians and old-timers spoke, and quickly learned not merely to survive, but thrive. He married a girl from Eagle Village on the Yukon River and together they raised a family, moving from cabin to cabin hunting and trapping on the trapline. These are their stories as much as his. This book is a precious record of a way of life that is gone forever. Mike's adventures are written so clearly you'll feel like you've lived those years in Alaska and had those adventures on the trapline yourself. But above all, you'll understand one man's love for Alaska and the faith in God it would come to give him.

This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Story of the Trapper there is presented for the general reader a vivid picture of an adventurous figure, which is painted with a singleness of purpose and a distinctness impossible of realization in the large and detailed histories of the American fur trade and the Hudson's Bay and North-West companies, or the various special relations and journals and narratives. The author's wilderness lore and her knowledge of the life, added to her acquaintance with its literature, have borne fruit in a personification of the Western and Northern trappers who live in her pages. It is the man whom we follow not merely in the evolution of the Western fur traffic, but also in the course of his strange life in the wilds, his adventures, and the contest of his craft against the cunning of his quarry. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: As the twilight turned into night, the pyramids lay deserted. The Tuaregs on silent horses were flying across the desert around the pyramids and the great Sphinx, making sure that what was about to take place was unobserved. A cortege of torches was winding its way down the tall dune towards the great Sphinx. Phillipa, holding the silver Urn with the Heidrichs ashes, rode at the center of the cortege. Reaching the Sphinx, the torchbearers broke into two columns to form an honor guard of light through which Phillipa rode to meet the matriarch standing between the Sphinx's mighty paws. Phillipa slowly handed the urn to her. A deep hole had been chiseled into the Sphinx's chest where one would think the heart might be. The urn was pushed gently into the cool depth of the Sphinx. The opening disappeared in front of Phillipa's eyes under the skilled hands of a stonemason. No one would suspect that the Sphinx had been tampered with. One by one the Tuareg torchbearers rode up the passage between the mighty paws of the Sphinx and dropped their torches in front of the Heidrichs secret burial chamber a final salute to the man who had translated their tablets. That night they slept outside under the stars. The matriarch's stallion came to greet Phillipa. She rubbed his forehead and velvety nose and then kissed it, as she had done long ago when she had been here with Udah Singh. "He likes you and wishes you well," said the matriarch behind her. " You have a gift with horses that I have not seen before." She continued, "You still love both equally, and that confuses you profoundly. Give yourself permission to love and be loved. Don't let conventions and western customs dictate your life. Live happy and free."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North, Middle, and South Forks of the Flathead River drain some of the wildest country in Montana, including Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. In Rangers, Trappers, and Trailblazers, John Fraley recounts the true adventures of people who earned their living among the mountains and along the cold, clear rivers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are the stories of the intrepid Glacier Park Ranger Clyde Fauley and his young family using a cable bucket to reach their isolated cabin across the Middle Fork, trapper Slim Link’s fateful meeting with a grizzly bear in the deep woods of the North Fork, and the life and times of Henry Thol, “the ranger’s ranger,” who happily snowshoed hundreds of miles through deep snows and minus-40 cold to patrol the South Fork wilderness. Tragedies and near-misses abound: a fatal shootout, tangles with bears and packrats, a devastating train wreck, and a missing airplane. But these are balanced with tales of courage, endurance, and remarkable personal achievement. Fraley tells all in intriguing detail wrested from primary sources.

It is the man whom we follow not merely in the evolution of the Western fur traffic, but also in the course of his strange life in the wilds, his adventures, and the contest of his craft against the cunning of his quarry. It is a most picturesque figure which is sketched in these pages with the etcher's art that selects essentials while boldly disregarding details. This figure as it is outlined here will be new and strange to the majority of readers, and the relish of its piquant flavor will make its own appeal. A strange chapter in history is outlined for those who would gain an insight into the factors which had to do with the building of the West. Woodcraft, exemplified in the calling of its most skillful devotees, is painted in pictures which breathe the very atmosphere of that life of stream and forest which has not lost its appeal even in these days of urban centralization. The flash of the paddle, the crack of the rifle, the stealthy tracking of wild beasts, the fearless contest of man against brute and savage, may be followed throughout a narrative which is constant in its fresh and personal interest.
