Dont expect the Great American Novel, or for that matter a true biography. Youll find out a lot about me as it is, as you read. This is necessary to help you understand where these tales are coming from. Im not sure myself, but I had a lot of fun living these tales.

Book excerpt: Pleasant Litchford and his family traveled as freed slaves from Virginia, who settled in Franklin County, Perry Township, Ohio, in the years between 1829-1830. The family struggled alongside other pioneers to establish a home in the Ohio wilderness. By the time of the Civil War, Pleasant was the fourth-largest landowner in Perry Township. He was a staunch advocate for the anti-slavery movement and a strong figure in the Underground Railroad. Pleasant and his family were also founders of the Second Baptist Church in Columbus in the 1840s. This church is still a vibrant part of the community. Pleasant Litchford had a 1/2 acre of his land set aside for a family cemetery on one of his many landholdings. Early in the twentieth century, there was a social shift in the community that mirrored the national climate. Policies were put in place in Upper Arlington by the Thompson brothers, to exclude people of color from landownership in attempts to create an all-white country club community. In 1955, the Litchford Cemetery was removed to build the Upper Arlington High School. Some of the remains were removed, but many were left behind. Those removed ended up in a far back part of Union Cemetery with no markers. They were left there to be forgotten. The rest of the Litchford Cemetery lies beneath the parking lot of the Upper Arlington High School. Since the publishing of the first edition, much has come to light. We need to honor those who settled the harsh wilderness of Ohio. Many residents are working hard to make sure that Pleasant Litchford's story continues. Acknowledging the truth of history and finding ways to make amends to those who have not been provided the respect they deserved, in life and in death.

Part fiction, part earnest mockumentary, AMBIENT PARKING LOT follows a band of musicians as they wander the parking structures of urban downtown and greater suburbia in quest of the ultimate ambient noise—one that promises to embody their historical moment and deliver them up to the heights of their self-important artistry. Along the way, they make sporadic forays into lyric while contending with doubts, delusions, miscalculations, mutinies, and minor triumphs. This saga peers into the wreckage of a post-9/11 landscape and embraces the comedy and poignancy of failed utopia.

Book excerpt: As the number of passenger cars in the world increases daily, so too does Earth's supply of parking spaces. In some cities, parking lots cover more than one-third of the metropolitan footprint--but their design and function has not been rethought since the 1950s. Here, urban designer Eran Ben-Joseph shares a different vision for parking's future--aesthetically pleasing, environmentally and architecturally responsible. He provides a visual history of this often-ignored urban space, introducing us to some of the many alternative and nonparking purposes that parking lots have served. He shows us parking lots that are lushly planted with trees and flowers and beautifully integrated with the rest of the built environment. With purposeful design, Ben-Joseph argues, parking lots could be significant public places, contributing as much to their communities as great boulevards, parks, or plazas.--From publisher description.

Her three-year trip along harrowing highways and in freezing parking lots tests her strength, ingenuity, and resilience. She digs deep into her personal marrow, meets many, and learns much along the way, but mostly it's a search for herself. This inspiring memoir relates a wealth of practical knowledge and tells a cautionary tale for those new to RV travel. For more experienced travelers, she shares familiar insights as well as ordeals they may wish to avoid. Throughout her venture, the author is comforted by her steadfast companions, two Schipperke dogs, Magic and Cricket, and a cat named Milo. By the end of her journey, Ms. Waters finds that for all her focus on RV improvement and maintenance, it's her self-esteem and confidence that gain the most from her challenging odyssey. Her quest becomes less about a place as destination, and more about achieving a peaceful state of mind.

How do you teach them to be kind and honest, insightful and inquisitive, athletic and curious, loving and thoughtful? How do you give your child the courage to be a good sport, a good sibling, a good friend, a good person? When Tom Sturges became a father, he wanted to be the greatest father who ever walked the earth. “I wanted to be so much more than a casual observer of my son’s life as it went by me.” So Sturges asked a lot of questions. He picked up ideas, advice, and tips from parents, grandparents, even rock stars and sports legends–anyone who had unique insights to share. The result is this practical, inspiring “rule book” for raising healthy, happy, safe, cherished children. Philosophical, sensible, and empowering, these 76 ideas subscribe to a simple premise: It is impossible to respect a child too much, but it is worth the effort to try. The rules are organized into seven fields, arranged by subject, and will help parents, mentors, coaches, and anyone who has children, to deal with an array of situations in a kind, respectful, and encouraging way. • EVERYDAY: Let your children feel welcome and loved from the first moment he or she walks into a room. “Smile When You See Him” (rule #4) and leave no doubt that, at that moment, your child is the most important person in your world. • COMMUNICATING: Since yelling parents intimidate, and a calm tone inspires, “When You Get Upset, Whisper” (rule #22) –and make sure your message is heard. • MANNERS MATTERS: Follow “The Bill Walton Rule,” (rule #34) and if you can’t be on time, be early. • NO LOST CHILDREN: When a family or group travels together, obey “The Caboose Rule” (rule #43) by assigning an adult or older child to keep up the rear–and ensure that no little ones lag behind. • DISCIPLINES AND PUNISHMENTS: “The 10-Second Rule” (rule #49) prescribes the minimum amount of time you should wait before thinking about punishing your child for that D in English. • PAIN HAPPENS, NOW WHAT?: After your child experiences a little cut, bump, or scrape, say “Squeeze My Hand as Much as It Hurts” (rule #62); it is remarkable how their being able to “show” you will help to ease his or her pain. • PLAY SPORTS, PERIOD: When your children accomplish something great in their sports, using “The ESPN Rule,” (rule #67) tell the story in intimate detail and fill them with the belief that they can do it again and again.

Book excerpt: A new way forward for sustainable quality of life in cities of all sizes Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Build American Prosperity is a book of forward-thinking ideas that breaks with modern wisdom to present a new vision of urban development in the United States. Presenting the foundational ideas of the Strong Towns movement he co-founded, Charles Marohn explains why cities of all sizes continue to struggle to meet their basic needs, and reveals the new paradigm that can solve this longstanding problem. Inside, you’ll learn why inducing growth and development has been the conventional response to urban financial struggles—and why it just doesn’t work. New development and high-risk investing don’t generate enough wealth to support itself, and cities continue to struggle. Read this book to find out how cities large and small can focus on bottom-up investments to minimize risk and maximize their ability to strengthen the community financially and improve citizens’ quality of life. Develop in-depth knowledge of the underlying logic behind the “traditional” search for never-ending urban growth Learn practical solutions for ameliorating financial struggles through low-risk investment and a grassroots focus Gain insights and tools that can stop the vicious cycle of budget shortfalls and unexpected downturns Become a part of the Strong Towns revolution by shifting the focus away from top-down growth toward rebuilding American prosperity Strong Towns acknowledges that there is a problem with the American approach to growth and shows community leaders a new way forward. The Strong Towns response is a revolution in how we assemble the places we live.
