Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemian Days: Three American Tales Solar from the first tale in this book being of political motive, it was written among the subjects of it, and read to several of them in 1864. Perhaps the only souvenir of refugee and skedaddler life abroad during the war ever published, its preservation may one day be useful in the socialistic archives of the South, to whose posterity slavery will seem almost a mythical thing. With as little bias in the second tale, I have etched the young Northern truant abroad during the secession. The closing tale, more recently written, in the midst of constant toil and travel, is an attempt to recall an old suburb, now nearly erased and illegible by the ex tension oi a great city, and may be considered a home American picture about contemporary with the European. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Land of Marvels: Folk-Tales From Austria and Bohemia The following collection of folk-tales from Lower Austria and Bohemia was made by Prof. Vernaleken, who wrote them down faithfully from word of mouth, and published them as a sort of supplement to the Children's and Household Stories of the Brothers Grimm, which were derived mostly from North-Western Germany. As these excursions into the land of marvels not only delight the imagination of youthful readers, but afford rich material to the scientific student of the history of the human spirit, a few words upon this subject may not be out of place in introducing the volume to English readers. The Marchen or folk tale is a form of oral tradition which has come down from lip to lip from the remotest antiquity j borne in olden times in the memory of bards or reciters, and now preserved as a house-lore among the peasantry of Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Prince of Bohemia: And Other Stories Here, however, it is possible for a good-natured critic to put in the apology that the artist has tried something unto which he was not born, and failing therein, has apparently committed faults greater than his real ones. This kindness is impossible in the case of the parodies, which are no parodies, of sainte-beuve. From the strictly literary point of view, it is disastrous to give as a parody of a man's work, with an in tention of casting ridicule thereon, something which is not in the least like that work, and which in consequence only casts ridicule on its author. To the criticism which takes in life as well as literature, it is a disaster to get in childish rages with people because they do not think your work so good as you think it yourself. And it is not known that Balzac had to complain of sainte-beuve in any other way than this, though he no doubt read into what sainte-beuve wrote a great deal more than sainte-beuve did say. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Bohemia, Taverns, and the Underworld: Stories and Sketches of People Famous, Infamous, and Obscure This is a collection of yarns from real life: yarns told on that undefined borderland known as Bohemia; in the bars of town and country inns, and around those obscure sections of British and cosmopolitan capitals collectively and rather vaguely termed The Underworld. They are stories retailed by men and women who lounge about to pass their leisure hours, watching life go by tales of famous people related by onlookers less famous sketches of real life as it presents itself in the raw, in all its ungarnished drama, pathos, and humour incidents knocked up against while travelling through Europe yarns of behind the scenes - Pan's, London, Berlin, Leipzig, Brussels, Naples, Rome, and Monte Carlo. This collection is intended to be neither particularly clever nor particularly profound, but merely a realistic portrait of a certain aspect of life drawn for the scrutiny of those people who have the breadth of view to interest themselves in things alien to their own sphere. In fiction, humanity is, of necessity, usually retouched. In literature-proper, books are generally written with a purpose - social, acquisitive, moral, reformative. This is only a heterogeneous collection of yarns picked up by the wayside of life. AS such, and pretending to no other qualities, let it take its chance, as real life takes its chance, incomprehensible, illogical, and elemental as many of its stories are. The author is simply recording, as faithfully as he may, some of those unrehearsed plays which enact themselves behind the arena of that circus the everyday world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Passion, Vol. 1 of 3: Lord Lovel's Daughter; The Bohemian; Second Love When things are good, I am willing to take them as they are; when faces are beautiful, I am content to gaze on them, without too accurately calling to mind what they will pro 'bably be when five or six additional lustres shall have passed over them. I cannot, indeed, claim any great originality or singularity of taste on this head. Most persons agree with me, more or less consciously, and with greater or lesser degrees of analysis. What I mean is this. There are few men who do not intuitively love to look upon a pretty face and well-moulded form; but certainly there are yet fewer who can duly judge of the various gradations of beauty upwards, from that lowest one which I have just named - prettiness, - still less of the latter item, symmetry and perfection of form. The man of more coarse perceptions, indeed, is less likely to have his taste offended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Bohemian Days: Three American Tales This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Reminiscences of an Old Bohemian IT has happened this way More than one of the many flattering reviewers of my Days and Ways of an Old Bohemian, some four years ago, remarked that no doubt I could fill another volume with stories of my exception ally varied experiences oi life. N ow, recalling those friendly suggestions, I realise that, when writing such a book and covering a period of sixty years with no diary or previously prepared notes to rely on, one is apt to overlook many incidents and people as interesting as those remembered at the time. In fact, I find that I have sufficient material for a second book, which I trust will be as well appreciated as the other. They are not even the peculiar property of the children any longer; the gravest scho lars do not disdain to examine and discuss them, and all parts of the world, from Mongolia to Cafraria, are ransacked to produce them. Here is presented a little gathering of these wild flowers, plucked not for their scientific interest, - though that they possess, - but for the wild fresh perfume that clings about them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Muse of the Department, a Prince of Bohemia, and Other Stories Although La Muse du Département is a most important work, it cannot perhaps be spoken of in unhesitating terms. It contains indeed, in the personage of Lousteau, one Of the very most elaborate of Balzac's portraits of a particular type of men of letters. The original is said to have been Jules Janin, who is somewhat disadvantageously contrasted here and else where with Claud Vignon, said on the same rather vague authority to be Gustave Planche. Both Janin and Planche are now too much forgotten, but in both more or less (and in Lousteau very much more Balzac certainly cannot be said to have dealt mildly with his bale noire, the critical tempera ment. Lousteau, indeed, though not precisely a scoundrel, is both a rascal and a cad. Even Balzac seems a little shocked at his [dire de faire part in reference to his mistress' child; and it is seldom possible to discern in any Of his proceedings the most remote approximation to the conduct of a gentleman. But, then, as we have seen, and shall see, Balzac's standard for the conduct Of his actual gentlemen was by no means fantastically exquisite or discouragingly high, and in the case of his Bohemians it was accommodating to the utmost degree. He seems to despise Lousteau, but rather for his insouciance and neglect of his opportunities of making himself a position than for anything else.
