Book excerpt: Once upon a time...about now in fact, in a busy and bustling town somewhere in Anywhere, on the same day and the same time, an old woman lay dying and a baby girl was about to be born. The old woman felt all that was Familiar and Warm and Known slipping away from her and she felt great fear - she was being drawn down a dark tunnel leading to somewhere she didn''t want to go. Powerless to resist she traveled down that tunnel, further and further away from the Known, ever nearer to the Unknown. Her fear grew and grew until before her she suddenly saw a Light At The End Of The Tunnel - and that light seemed so warm and welcoming, exciting and enticing that her fear completely evaporated; the Unknown suddenly seemed so much more exciting and interesting than the Known that, instead of resisting her passage down that strange tunnel, she pushed and scrambled her way onwards to the light to emerge, kicking and screaming with hopeful anticipation, into a New Day. And at the opposite end of that same town... The baby girl felt all that was Familiar and Warm and Known slipping away from her and she felt great fear - she was being drawn down a dark tunnel leading to somewhere she didn''t want to go. AND SO IT GOES ON... Welcome to Anywhere. Enjoy your stay! 28 Tales from and inspired by the fantastical, magical, mythical Land of Anywhere - a place very different from, yet disturbingly similar to, where you live now. WHAT THE CRITICS SAY "A unique reading experience. The real-life characters behind these innocuous fairy tales and fables hit you by surprise, a series of sharp rocks hidden in those snowballs. Amazingly, with all the faux-naievete and children''s book elements gleefully displayed here, the writing never becomes twee or condescending. Bravo, Mr. Hennerley!" - VINE VOICE "The most spiritually and intellectually worthwhile and inspiring read I have encountered in a very long time. To me it is a humanist masterpiece on par with Faulkner, Lawrence and Bellow. It subverts conventional morals and doctrines while anchoring the plot development and the characters upon what I would call authentic virtues, Intuitive Knowledge and Intuitive Truth." - US REVIEWS WHAT READERS SAY: "This is the best book I have read since The Book Thief." ★★★★★ "I really enjoyed this book...some stories can move you to tears. Brilliant." ★★★★★ "Touched my heart. Stories full of love, hope, and accepting woven beautifully with whimsy. I couldn''t put this book down nor did I want to." ★★★★★ "One of the best books I''ve read in Damn near forever! I found myself savoring it bit by bit so it wouldn''t end too soon, but sadly it is over and I must wait for another book as nurturing to my spirit." ★★★★★ "I loved this book.Yes, it''s a collection of tales, but so much more. It''s a reminder that we don''t have to stoop to the level of the powerful one percent. Humanity can prevail with decent and kindness. While it relates the ugliness in the world today, it also offers hope and love." ★★★★★ "Should be on everyone''s must read list!" ★★★★★

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from the Sephardic Dispersion begins the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. It is the first volume in Folktales of the Jews, the five-volume series to be released over the next several years, in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg's classic, Legends of the Jews. The 71 tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives, Named in Honor of Dov Noy, The University of Haifa (IFA), a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the Sephardic culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This volume and the others to come will be monuments to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

Book excerpt: What if a single act of kindness could be more powerful than all the money in the world? What if you are so much more than just mud and sea water, seasoned with a hint of consciousness? What if you are special and unique but no more special or unique than anyone else? What if all that you can see isn''t all there is to be seen? What if courage comes in more forms than society cares to admit? What if the most powerful force in the Universe is Love? What if Love really doesn''t give a damn who you love? What if success isn''t actually defined by how much shiny bling you own? What if difference is a profound strength rather than something to be mocked? What if real friends are flesh and blood, not social media profiles? What if you''re defined not by race or colour, gender or sexuality, religion or belief but simply by your shared humanity. What if this life is but one step in a much longer journey? What if somewhere in the Universe there is a world parallel to this one - lets call it Anywhere - that is very, very much like the one you''re in now except that in this parallel world magic still exists? Because magic can happen in the most ordinary of places - and so can evil. Welcome to Anywhere. What will YOU discover? 24 incredible tales from Anywhere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered over much of the world throughout most of their history, are the Jews one people or many? How do they resemble and how do they differ from Jews in other places and times? What have their relationships been to the cultures of their neighbors? To address these and similar questions, some of the finest scholars of our day have contributed their insights to Cultures of the Jews, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award upon its hardcover publication in 2002. Constructing their essays around specific cultural artifacts that were created in the period and locale under study, the contributors describe the cultural interactions among different Jews–from rabbis and scholars to non-elite groups, including women–as well as between Jews and the surrounding non-Jewish world. What they conclude is that although Jews have always had their own autonomous traditions, Jewish identity cannot be considered the fixed product of either ancient ethnic or religious origins. Rather, it has shifted and assumed new forms in response to the cultural environment in which the Jews have lived. Mediterranean Origins, the first volume in Cultures of the Jews, describes the concept of the “People” or “Nation” of Israel that emerges in the Hebrew Bible and the culture of the Israelites in relation to that of neighboring Canaanite groups. It also discusses Jewish cultures in Babylonia, in Palestine during the Greco-Roman and Byzantine periods, and in Arabia during the formative years of Islam.
