How do you follow your heart when it’s in two places? Filipino musician and producer Mon Mendoza has been in New York for less than a day. Just long enough to feel like he doesn’t belong despite landing a life-changing opportunity. All he can do is set a date night for just himself and some pancit canton. Which, as it turns out, is the only invitation his gorgeous Pinoy neighbor needs… Actress Olivia Angeles can wear a character like a well-fitted dress. It’s her real self she’s having a hard time fitting into, craving a niche in Hollywood that doesn’t compromise her identity in the name of success. And right now, all she wants is comfort in the form of tasty noodles and her outrageously hot new neighbor. One night. Just enough to lose herself in his touch and the feel of his lips… Only their sexy little tryst isn’t quite what they signed up for. Because for the next month, Mon and Olivia are working on the same movie. Together. Now they’re discovering they have a lot more in common than Pinoyness and sizzling chemistry. Book excerpt: "The Filipino diaspora is at least 400 years old. Since the sixteenth century, Filipinos have been going to foreign lands to find their place in the sun. In the beginning they were known as the Manila Men. It was only in the nineteenth century that they assumed their present identity as Filipinos." "For two-and-a-half centuries, Filipinos by the hundreds traveled yearly to Mexico and the Americas, with many electing to stay and find a new life. The chief means for migration was the Manila galleon, also known as nao de China, that sailed between the Philippines and Mexico to carry on a lively trade in Asian goods in exchange for silver from the Americas and the trappings of civilization from the West." "The end of the galleon trade in 1815 did not stop the exodus of Filipinos to foreign lands as they began to discover the lure of other exotic ports in Asia and Europe. This book attempts to answer the question often asked: What happened to those Filipinos who started the diaspora? The answers are important because they fill a gap in the long history of this adventurous race."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the intersection between sound and modernity in dramatic and musical performance in Manila and the Asia-Pacific between 1869 and 1948. During this period, tolerant political regimes resulted in the globalization of capitalist relations and the improvement of transcontinental travel and worldwide communication. This allowed modern modes of theatre and music consumption to instigate the uniformization of cultural products and processes, while simultaneously fragmenting societies into distinct identities, institutions, and nascent nation-states. Taking the performing bodies of migrant musicians as the locus of sound, this book argues that the global movement of acoustic modernities was replicated and diversified through its multiple subjectivities within empire, nation, and individual agencies. It traces the arrival of European travelling music and theatre companies in Asia which re-casted listening into an act of modern cultural consumption, and follows the migration of Manila musicians as they engaged in the modernization project of the neighboring Asian cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy's first two-ocean war was the Spanish-American War of 1898. A war that was global in scope, with the decisive naval battles of war at Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba separated by two months and over ten thousand miles. During these battles in this quick, modern war, America s New Steel Navy came of age. While the American commanders sailed to war with a technologically advanced fleet, it was the lessons they had learned from Adm. David Farragut in the Civil War that prepared them for victory over the Spaniards. This history of the U.S. Navy s operations in the war provides some memorable portraits of the colorful officers who decided the outcome of these battles: Shang Dewey in the Philippines and Fighting Bob Evans off southern Cuba; Jack Philip conning the Texas and Constructor Hobson scuttling the Merrimac; Clark of the Oregon pushing his battleship around South America; and Adm. William Sampson and Commodore Scott Schley ending their careers in controversy. These officers sailed into battle with a navy of middle-aged lieutenants and overworked bluejackets, along with green naval militiamen. They were accompanied by numerous onboard correspondents, who documented the war.In addition to descriptions of the men who fought or witnessed the pivotal battles on the American side, the book offers sympathetic portraits of several Spanish officers, the Dons for whom American sailors held little personal enmity. Admirals Patricio Montojo and Pasqual Cervera, doomed to sacrifice their forces for the pride of a dying empire, receive particular attention. The first study of the Spanish-American War to be published in many years, this book takes a journalistic approach to the subject, making the conflict and the people involved relevant to today s readers. This work details a war in which victory was determined as much by leadership as by the technology of the American Steel Navy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century—not long after 1898, when the United States claimed the Philippines as an American colony—Filipinas/os became a vital part of the agricultural economy of California's fertile San Joaquin Delta. In downtown Stockton, they created Little Manila, a vibrant community of hotels, pool halls, dance halls, restaurants, grocery stores, churches, union halls, and barbershops. Little Manila was home to the largest community of Filipinas/os outside of the Philippines until the neighborhood was decimated by urban redevelopment in the 1960s. Narrating a history spanning much of the twentieth century, Dawn Bohulano Mabalon traces the growth of Stockton's Filipina/o American community, the birth and eventual destruction of Little Manila, and recent efforts to remember and preserve it. Mabalon draws on oral histories, newspapers, photographs, personal archives, and her own family's history in Stockton. She reveals how Filipina/o immigrants created a community and ethnic culture shaped by their identities as colonial subjects of the United States, their racialization in Stockton as brown people, and their collective experiences in the fields and in the Little Manila neighborhood. In the process, Mabalon places Filipinas/os at the center of the development of California agriculture and the urban West.

It’s vibrant, overwhelming, overcrowded, and yes, a bit smelly. Many visitors skip Manila on their way to the beaches, or they never leave their Manila hotel room or favorite mall. With this guide book, you can have a blast in the real Manila, far beyond where tourists usually tread. Every recommendation has a QR code and Google Maps link, so it’s easy to navigate. I'll show you how to get local mobile data service, and I’ll make sure you don’t get scammed by taxis. A ride around Manila costs less than $5. In central Manila, Intramuros is the old walled city, previously open only to the Spanish colonialists. The’s a fort, a cathedral, and the remains of a moat. We’ll climb up to a rooftop view, find a hidden cafe that has amazing churros, and learn why the “dirty” ice cream isn’t so dirty. Yes, there’s a huge mall near Manila Bay, but did you know there’s a local seaside promenade there? There’s a rooftop cafe next to the beach, a classic rock bar, and a boat tour that costs $3. I’ve never seen any foreigners there. Nearby, on the water, there’s a seafood market where they’ll cook your purchases for you to eat right there. I’ve never seen any foreigners there either. BGC is Manila’s “global” development, and also the only place to get real Italian food in Manila. I’ll show you where. Besides the real Italian food, we’ll ride a fake Venetian gondola and check out a science museum. We’ll eat our way around the world’s oldest Chinatown and buy Filipino-Chinese pastries to take home. I’ll show you a hidden-away temple that’s upstairs in a building, a church with masses in Mandarin and Hokkien, and a street full of amazing Chinese foods that cost a dollar or two. Speaking of cheap food? I don’t recommend you eat on the street. But I’ll show you better alternatives to get your Filipino street food. And I have an entire chapter on balut — even the hot new balut trend, and where to find it. We’ll see indie rock shows, check out hipster art spaces, and eat Hokkaido toast, whatever that is. I list Manila hotels I personally recommend, and scams I personally warn you against. I’ve even got a bunch of warnings about bathrooms in the Philippines, and how to deal with bad customer service. And don’t be shy: if you want to meet and date Filipinas, yes, I cover that too. Experience the best of Manila, the local way. Mabuhay!
