Book excerpt: We all have good intentions. To eat healthier, exercise, read more, and scroll less. To have better relationships with our spouses, children, friends, and co-workers. To live a life we are proud of and that we love to live. Unfortunately, most of our daily actions feel urgent rather than intentional. We can't keep our head above water, we struggle to get ahead, and we're always waiting for things to slow down. That's when our good intentions are overshadowed by excuses, and circumstances that are out of our control. Fortunately, our busy lives are not mutually exclusive from living lives of purpose and living out our passion. Author Desiree Petrich believes wholeheartedly that we can build a life that we love, even while feeling a bit overwhelmed. But first, we must choose to find purpose, passion, and gratitude in every day, even on days that feel hard. That requires taking intentional action toward continuously getting to know ourselves better, having positive and productive internal dialogue, and taking control of the things that we can control. Desiree hopes that others will take the lessons from her failures and successes on their journey to becoming the best version of themselves and be inspired to take action on their goals and dreams! Through the lens of Desiree's brilliant Foundation of Self framework, Taking Intentional Action will help you build a strong sense of self-engagement, self-worth, and self-awareness, all as it relates back to living a happy life, the life you choose to lead. "If you are looking to connect on a deeper level to your soul's purpose, this book is for you! The raw, vulnerable, and yet, positive message Desiree shares will be impactful for anyone who has gone through hard things, to remind them that there is always a silver lining, but we have to intentionally look for it. There is always a way we can do and be better." -Jessica Burgio Holistic Life and Business Coach "If you are looking for a book that's got heart + depth, but at the same time gives you the tools and mindset shifts to work through the hard times in life, THIS IS IT." -Katy Fassett Health and Wellness Coach

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tackling some central problems in the philosophy of action, Mele constructs an explanatory model for intentional behavior, locating the place and significance of such mental phenomena as beliefs, desires, reason, and intentions in the etiology of intentional action. Part One comprises a comprehensive examination of the standard treatments of the relations between desires, beliefs, and actions. In Part Two, Mele goes on to develop a subtle and well-defended view that the motivational role of intentions is of a different sort from that of beliefs and desires. Mele, also offers a provocative explanation of how we come to have intentions and elaborates on his earlier work concerning akratic failures of will.

Book excerpt: What is the difference between a wink and a blink? The answer is important not only to philosophers of mind, for significant moral and legal consequences rest on the distinction between voluntary and involuntary behavior. However, "action theory"—the branch of philosophy that has traditionally articulated the boundaries between action and non-action, and between voluntary and involuntary behavior—has been unable to account for the difference. Alicia Juarrero argues that a mistaken, 350-year-old model of cause and explanation—one that takes all causes to be of the push-pull, efficient cause sort, and all explanation to be prooflike—underlies contemporary theories of action. Juarrero then proposes a new framework for conceptualizing causes based on complex adaptive systems. Thinking of causes as dynamical constraints makes bottom-up and top-down causal relations, including those involving intentional causes, suddenly tractable. A different logic for explaining actions—as historical narrative, not inference—follows if one adopts this novel approach to long-standing questions of action and responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book links the concept of intention to human action. It provides answers to questions like: Why do we act intentionally? Which impact do reasons and motives have on our decisions? Certain events are identified as intentional actions when they are considered as being rationalized by reasons. The linguistic description of such events enables us to reveal the structure of intention. The mental and the linguistic constitute irreducible ways of understanding events. Among the topics discussed are intentionality, actions, the linguistic form to talk about intentionality and actions, Brentano’s view of intentionality, the phenomenological approach to intention and Wittgenstein's proposals. The contributions by Wolfgang Künne, Peter Simons, Christian Bermes, Kevin Mulligan, Severin Schroeder, António Marques, Margit Gaffal, Michel Le Du, Jesús Padilla Gálvez, Bernhard Obsieger and Amir Horowitz show that actions and decisions are guided by intentional considerations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an important gateway through which professional analytic philosophers and their students can come to understand the significance of Hegel's philosophy for contemporary theory of action. As such it will contribute to the erosion of the sterile barrier between the continental and analytic approaches to philosophy. Michael Quante focuses on what Hegel has to say about such central concepts as action, person and will, and then brings these views to bear on contemporary debates in analytic philosophy. Crisply written, this book will thus address the common set of preoccupations of analytic philosophers of mind and action, and Hegel specialists.

This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Philosophy - Theoretical (Realisation, Science, Logic, Language), grade: 1.7, Bielefeld University, course: Gilbert Ryle, language: English, abstract: The main objective of this paper is to discuss how official doctrine and Gilbert Ryle explain how one performs an intentional action. Gilbert Ryle developed his theory of mind in his book "The Concept of Mind" (1949) against the Cartesian dualism. The official doctrine is mainly originates from Ren Descartes "mind-body dualism". Concerning the official doctrine, I aspire to elucidate two main aspects: Firstly, I will epitomize important aspects of mind-body "parallelism". More precisely, I will illustrate, taking into account the official doctrine, that mind and body are two separate entities. Secondly, I will illustrate mind-body "interactionalism".
