Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When something goes from bad to worse, we say it "fell out of the frying pan and into the fire." This timeless phrases succinctly captures what has happened to the majority of African Americans since the 1970s. The civil rights movement of the 1960s brought about remarkable gains for most black people, and by 1970 African Americans were beginning to be key figures in national politics and in corporate board rooms. The black middle class was decidedly growing, and thus a handful of African Americans escaped the frying pan altogether. But after 1970, heavy industry began to disappear as American companies looked to foreign lands for cheaper manufacturing. Millions of jobs were lost. The number of black poor began to grow dramatically, city services declined, federal spending on cities dried up, affirmative action programs were dismantled, blatant acts of racism began to rise again, and the United States entered a deep economic recession. But this decline is only part of the story. Since 1970, the black community has resisted oppression, struggled for power, dealt with internal tensions and conflicts, and profoundly shaped American culture. This book explores a range of issues that the African American community faces in the late 20th century: the rebirth of black nationalism, the emergence of a new black conservative movement, the challenge of black feminism, the impact of Caribbean immigration, the rise of rap music and hip-hop culture. It looks at the impact on African American life of such diverse personalities as Roy Innis, Toni Morrison, Anita Hill, Jimi Hendrix, Louis Farrakhan, Angela Davis, Spike Lee, Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm, and Jesse Jackson, among others. Into the Fire will challenge and be challenged by readers of all ages, and calls on our young people to exercise their power to determine the outcome of chapters yet to be written in the history of African Americans.

Book excerpt: Sometimes a person has many thoughts. And sometimes those thoughts form into a bunch of things that don't make sense. That is until you write a book and call it a journal so you don't have to organize them. Sarcastically the most important thing is the person who wrote this had a real moral standard. He wasn't just trying to write a book to get paid. But unfortunately I'm sure there plenty of smartasses who who have something to say about that. Then again it's a journal so any expectations of what it should be are dismissed. It can be as sloppy as the sewer mixture you pump out of your bleep every morning. Nonetheless it wasn't written for other people to enjoy. It's just a journal so in that case you can't really put a price on it. But yeah it's about a bunch of crazy stuff. Including but not limited to art, corruption, mental illness, and the insanity of making sense. But most importantly mocking the reader for ever observing it. So make sure to never read it or mention it to your friends. Just kidding you can do it if you want but I'm not asking you to. Wow this description turned out kinda funny.

Book excerpt: The Third Book of Joy: Chain Dance is the second notebook of family lore, the collection of Joy's magical stories about her enslaved ancestors, researched by Professor Bo Wolfson in Burning Streams; the first notebook was published in Blood of Angels. When Heaven's heartbroken death in childbirth and Whip Man's torture at her father's hands lead her to resurrect herself as a death dancer, magic and terror drive the plantation's owner off of his land. Most of the men and women who labor on the haunted plantation flee, following Heaven's brother to his Louisiana swampland. But not everyone runs. A winged angel, a dancing coven of witches, a shapeshifting wildcat, and a ferocious pack of werewolves defend Solace's plantation from attack. Marauding patrollers and opportunists clash with the cunning, the blood thirst, and the supernatural powers unleashed by women determined to free themselves and the men and children they love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete 3-book historical Christian fiction series by the New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love and The Masterpiece. Travel to first-century Rome in this classic series and discover what has inspired millions of readers worldwide. This Collection bundles all three titles from the Mark of the Lion series into one volume. A Voice in the Wind, the first book in the trilogy, introduces readers to Hadassah, a young Jewish girl captured and sold into slavery but still holding firm to her faith in God. Though torn by her love for a handsome aristocrat, Hadassah becomes a shining beacon of light in the darkness and depravity around her. In An Echo in the Darkness, Marcus, a wealthy Roman aristocrat touched by Hadassah’s sincere belief, begins to wonder if there’s more to this life. As he continues to search for meaning and faith, he is led by a whispering voice from the past that could set him free from the darkness of his soul. The trilogy concludes with As Sure as the Dawn, which follows Atretes, the high chief of a Germanic tribe who fought as a gladiator and won his freedom. As Atretes sets out to return home with his infant son, only one thing stands in his way: Rizpah, a Christian widow who has cared for the baby since his birth. All three books in this latest Collection include a preface from Francine Rivers and discussion questions suitable for personal and group use. “Francine Rivers puts readers right into the history of the moment.” —Romantic Times “Francine Rivers without a doubt is one of the finest storytellers of our generation. . . . No one reading her books will ever be the same again.” —Debbie Macomber, New York Times bestselling author “As we ‘watch’ Hadassah and Atretes struggle through first-century trials, we learn how to handle similar situations in the twenty-first century. The ‘costumes’ may vary, but our Lord does not change.” —Angela Hunt “Francine redefined Christian fiction—honest, unflinching, powerful, life-changing—demonstrating why storytelling is the most effective way to communicate God’s truth. Every Christian novelist writing today owes a debt of gratitude to Francine Rivers for lighting the way.” —Liz Curtis Higgs “Francine Rivers writes from her heart to touch the hearts of her readers. Her books are essential reading for all who love Christian fiction.” —Bodie Thoene

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now difficult to imagine that, in the years before Whitman's death in 1892, there was real doubt in the minds of Whitman and his literary circle whether Leaves of Grass would achieve lasting fame. Much of the critical commentary in the first decade after his burial in Camden was as negative as that in Boston's Christian Register, which spoke of Whitman as someone who “succeeded in writing a mass of trash without form, rhythm, or vitality.”That the balance finally tipped toward admiration, culminating in Whitman's acceptance into the literary canon, was due substantially to the unflagging labor of Horace Traubel, famous for his nine volumes of Whitman conversations but less well known for his provocative monthly journal of socialist politics and avant-garde culture, the Conservator.Conserving Walt Whitman's Fame offers a generous selection from the enormous trove of Whitman-related materials that Traubel included in the 352 issues of the Conservator. Among the revelatory, perceptive, and often entertaining items presented here are the most illuminating of the Conservator's more than 150 topical essays on Whitman and memoirs by many of his friends and literary cohorts that shed new light on the poet, his work, and his critical reception. Also important is the richer understanding these pages afford of Horace Traubel's own sophisticated, deeply humane, and feisty views of America.

Book excerpt: Danladi did not plan to become a drug courier, but when the opportunity came through Dorothy, he took it. Dorothy was a drug pusher and a lesbian. Danladi saw her as God sent, the kind of girl he would have loved, but there was Betty, her lover and a chronic drug addict. He would have been glad working as construction laborer if she hadnt suggested he meet Henry Okafar, a vicious drug baron who dines with government agents. There would be money coming to him if he agrees to haul drugs overseas. But the drug business is high risk. More blood had been split on drug war than most wars and millions of naira spent, but the war is continuing. Maula was a great medicine man from Hausa land. With some airport staffs and government agents colliding with Henry, Maulas talisman was seeing as an enigma. The streets of Green Town were worse hit, youth graduated from sniffing cocaine to inhaling certain solvents with hallucinogenic effect, resulting in serious physical damage and numbers of deaths. Things would have stayed that way if a foreign diplomat hadnt made a scanty comment. It was the beginning of problems for NDLEA and the police.
