Book Synopsis The Great Big Book of Horrible Things by : Matthew White
Download or read book The Great Big Book of Horrible Things written by Matthew White and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compulsively readable and utterly original account of world history—from an atrocitologist’s point of view. Evangelists of human progress meet their opposite in Matthew White's epic examination of history's one hundred most violent events, or, in White's piquant phrasing, "the numbers that people want to argue about." Reaching back to 480 BCE's second Persian War, White moves chronologically through history to this century's war in the Congo and devotes chapters to each event, where he surrounds hard facts (time and place) and succinct takeaways (who usually gets the blame?) with lively military, social, and political histories. With the eye of a seasoned statistician, White assigns each entry a ranking based on body count, and in doing so he gives voice to the suffering of ordinary people that, inexorably, has defined every historical epoch. By turns droll, insightful, matter-of-fact, and ultimately sympathetic to those who died, The Great Big Book of Horrible Things gives readers a chance to reach their own conclusions while offering a stark reminder of the darkness of the human heart.

Book Synopsis Quicklet on How I Met Your Mother Season 3 by : Hayley Igarashi
Download or read book Quicklet on How I Met Your Mother Season 3 written by Hayley Igarashi and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How I Met Your Mother has a misleading title. Sure, the premise focuses on a father telling his kids how he first met their mother, but it's really just about life - Ted finding his future mate is just a small part of that story. Season 3 of the hit CBS comedy series continues to revolve around Ted Mosby, struggling architect, and his four best friends. This time, however, the dynamic is a bit different than in the previous seasons. Marshall and Lily are married, and as of last season's finale, Ted and Robin are broken-up. Barney continues to be his hilarious womanizing self, but no one expects or desires that to change any time soon.

Donovan, eBook Reviewer (regarding Arena 1) ARENA 3 is book #3 in the Bestselling Survival Trilogy, which begins with ARENA 1, a free download. After nearly freezing to death on their trek north, Brooke and her small group wake to find themselves in civilization. They have found the utopian city, hidden deep in a remote stretch of Canada. They have heat, food, comfortable beds, clean clothes, and security. Finally, they have made it. As Brooke recovers, she meets the mysterious survivors who inhabit this city, and who vie for her love. She trains again, enhancing her fighting skills greatly under the wing of a new mentor, and matures into a woman. Brooke soon realizes, though, that being safe and secluded is not all there is to life. When she hears rumors of survivors underground, deep in America, fighting to restore order from the inside—her Dad possibly amongst them—Brooke finds herself facing the choice of a lifetime: to live in this perfect place, free and safe for the rest of her days, or to embark and fight for others’ freedom. It would be a journey, she knows, back through post-apocalyptic America, this time traveling west, across its breadth, in search of the rumored survivors, of her father. She would have to fight her way through a land transformed by apocalypse, try to survive a never-ending stream of dangers, roving packs of violent gangs, with few resources and fewer supplies. It would be a two thousand mile trek to a certain suicide. And if she leaves this utopia, she knows, there is no coming back. Yet that is not the worst of it: something else lies in her way. Arena 3. The greatest arena left in what was once America, the most brutal and dangerous of them all, the one from which no one survives. The one, she knows, that would test the very limit of all that she is. Will she risk it all for others? An action-packed dystopian thriller featuring a tough female heroine whom readers worldwide have fallen in love with, ARENA THREE is the shocking conclusion to the bestselling Survival Trilogy, and one that will leave you turning pages late into the night. "Addicting...ARENA ONE was one of those books that you read late into the night until your eyes start to cross because you don’t want to put it down." –Dallas Examiner

Book Synopsis Gang of Four's Entertainment! by : Kevin J.H. Dettmar
Download or read book Gang of Four's Entertainment! written by Kevin J.H. Dettmar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following hard on the explosion of British punk, in 1979 Gang of Four produced post-punk's smartest record, Entertainment! For the first time, a band wedded punk's angry energy to funk's propulsive beats-and used that music to put across lyrics that brought a heady mixture of Marxist theory and situationism to exposing the cultural politics of everyday life. But for an American college student from the suburbs-and, one expects, for many, many others, including British youth-Jon King's and Andy Gill's mumbled lyrics were often all but unintelligible. Political rock 'n' roll is always something of an oxymoron: rock audiences by and large don't tune in to be lectured to. But what can it mean that a band that made pop songs as political theory actively resisted making that theory legible? Coming to terms with the impact of Entertainment! requires us to take the mondegreen-the misunderstood lyric-seriously. The old joke has it that the title of R.E.M.'s debut album should have been not Murmur, but Mumble: true, so far as it goes. But that's the title, too, of rock 'n' roll's Greatest Hits compilation-and that strategic inarticulateness itself, which creates such an important role for the listener, has an important politics.
