Book excerpt: The basic question is whether the Republic of China will continue as a political entity considering the Shanghai Communique, its ouster from the United Nations, and the atmosphere of detente between the People's Republic of China and the United States. The cultural, political, military and economic history of Taiwan indicates that, although the Taiwanese cultural inheritance from the mainland is strong, the Japanese occupation from 1895 to 1945, the arrival of the Nationalist Government in 1949, and heavy American aid from 1950 to 1965 have created a divergent economic and political life on Taiwan as compared with mainland China. The spectacular economic development of Taiwan, if continued, will result in the emergence of Taiwan as an industrialized economy by the beginning of the next decade, far ahead of mainland China. It is concluded that, despite some flux in big-power relationships in Southeast Asia, the Nationalist Government of Taiwan feels no immediate pressure for abrupt change in economic, political, or military arrangements now in effect. The status quo will obtain for the foreseeable future with changes in present relationships seen as evolutionary, not revolutionary in character. (Author).

Boas completed his degree with a dissertation on the optical properties of water, before continuing his studies and receiving his doctorate in 1881. Boas became a professor of Anthropology at Columbia University in 1899 and founded the first Ph.D program in anthropology in America. He was also a leading figure in the creation of the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Franz Boas had a long career and a great impact on many areas of study. He died on 21st December 1942.

This volume ventures what the generative mechanism is that produces such rapid change and discusses how this differs from late Modernity. Contributors examine if an intensification of morphogenesis (positive feedback that results in a change in social form) and a corresponding reduction in morphostasis (negative feedback that restores or reproduces the form of the social order) best captures the process involved. This volume resists proclaiming a new social formation as so many books written by empiricists have done by extrapolating from empirical data. Until we can convincingly demonstrate that a new generative mechanism is at work, it is premature to argue what accounts for the global changes that are taking place and where they will lead. More concisely we seek to answer the question whether or not current social change can be regarded as social morphogenesis. Only then, in the next volumes will the same team of authors be able to remove the question mark.
