This test was conducted to confirm the results of the feasibility tests with the proposed final configuration for this modification and also to evaluate both the performance in hover and level flight and the handling qualities throughout the flight envelope. This modification provides an increase in the usable in-ground-effect (IGE) operating envelope and improves the directional control characteristics while maneuvering. The test showed good agreement with the results of the earlier feasibility tests. The maximum safe IGE maneuvering envelope for the tractor tail rotor AH-1G was determined and defined by those conditions of gross weight and density altitude where a 10-percent directional control margin was available in the critical azimuth in a 15-knot wind. Using the same criteria for the standard AH-1G configuration, the difference due to the improved directional control with the tractor tail rotor is equivalent to an additional 1500 pounds payload at the same density altitude.

Book excerpt: A feasibility test of the tractor tail rotor modification of the AH-1G helicopter was conducted near Fort Worth, Texas (550-feet elevation), and Alamosa, Colorado (7535-feet elevation), during the period 7 October to 19 October 1967. This test was conducted to obtain quantitative flight test data to serve as a basis for determining if the tractor tail rotor modification proposed by the contractor for the AH-1G helicopter would correct the directional control problems which currently exist on the AH-1G helicopter with the standard tail rotor configuration. This test revealed that in-ground-effect (IGE) low speed directional control and IGE low speed dynamic directional stability were greatly improved by installation of the tractor tail rotor, . IGE directional control limitations with the standard tail rotor installed were encountered at approximately 8100 pounds gross weight near sea level in previous tests. This test with the tractor tail rotor did not reveal any IGE directional control limitations at approximately 8940 pounds gross weight and near sea level. The test results indicate that additional directional control could be obtained with the tractor tail rotor, if the geometry of the directional control system were changed to negate the adverse effects of the stability and control augmentation system (SCAS) on the ability to obtain full left tail rotor pitch.

Book excerpt: The lateral flight performance of the tractor-tail-rotor-configured AH-1G helicopter was evaluated at gross weights of 8500 and 9500 pounds. The AH-1G is capable of 0.53g and 0.38g accelerations in right and left lateral flight, respectively, at 8500 pounds. At a 9500-pound gross weight, acceleration was 0.23g to the right and 0.20g to the left. Aircraft handling qualitites and time required to attain maximum lateral velocity are dependent upon rate and type of control application. A step-type lateral control input permitted rapid attainment of accelerating attitude but produced yaw oscillations which resulted in loss of directional control and caused high pilot workload in stabilizing power and aircraft attitude. Ramp inputs delayed establishment of the accelerating attitude. A modified pulse input induced negligible roll and yaw oscillation and produced rapid establishment of the desired roll attitude. Direction-of-flight reversals induced large power transients that frequently exceeded the transmission torque limits. Precise heading and pitch attitude could not be maintained during the reversals. Airspeed in lateral flight could not be determined without special airspeed measuring devices. The sideward airspeed limit was exceeded frequently in left lateral flight with no warning or cue to the pilot that the limit had been reached.

Book excerpt: The AH-1G helicopter with the HELLFIRE modular Missile System (HMMS) and the Airborne Target Acquisition Fire Control System (ATAFCS) is being used as a surrogate trainer for the YAH-64 helicopter. The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity was tasked to provide quantitative and qualitative data on the handling qualities of the helicopter, obtain limited level flight performance data, and obtain limited handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed. The test helicopter was a production AH-1G helicopter (212 tail rotor) modified with an ATAFCS mockup and carrying eight HELLFIRE missiles. Six productive flight test hours were flown in six flights. No shortcomings or deficiencies attributable to HMMS and ATAFCS installation were found. The AH-1G helicopter, with HMMS and ATAFCS installed, exhibits an additional equivalent flat plate area of 4.0 ft2 compared to the standard AH-1Q helicopter. The handling qualities of the helicopter with only the ATAFCS installed are essentially the same as the production AH-1G helicopter. (Author).
