Download or read book Tabooed Jung: Marginality as Power written by C. Gallant and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Jung's break with Freud, he has been excluded from both the psychoanalytic discourse and those schools of literary criticism influenced by psychoanalysis. But this very exclusion has shaped the discourse. Further, many of the analytic writings of Jung and the post-Jungian school of Developmental Jungians are parallel to work by contemporary ego psychologists and feminists, and could contribute to those fields. Jung's entire case throws much light upon the state of marginalization, its effects and its powers.

Book excerpt: Avoided with a formulaic dread of his `mysticism' and unread lest the contagion of his thoughts influence and infect the orthodox, Carl Jung has, since his break with Sigmund Freud, been excluded from both psychoanalytic discourse and those schools of literary criticism influence by psychoanalysis. But this very exclusion has shaped the discourse in these schools. Indeed, many of Jung's analytic writings and many of the writings of the Developmental Jungians are parallel to work by contemporary ego psychologists and feminists, and could contribute to those fields. Jung's exclusion, therefore, serves as a perfect case study of the state of Marginalization, its effects, and its powers. Divided into two parts, Tabooed Jung focuses on both Jung's marginalization itself and the effects of that marginalization on notions of power and feminism. Arguing that Jung's situation foreshadowed the contemporary disenchantment with Freud and things Freudian, Gallant argues that there is less difference between Jung and today's critics than the critics themselves might think. She concludes with an argument for Jung's inclusion in the ongoing dialogues of psychological and feminist criticisms, as one whose work proceeds along congruent lines.

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Jung written by Polly Young-Eisendrath and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition represents a wide-ranging critical introduction to the psychology of Carl Jung, one of the founders of psychoanalysis. Including two new essays and thorough revisions of most of the original chapters, it constitutes a radical assessment of his legacy. Andrew Samuels' introduction succinctly articulates the challenges facing the Jungian community. The fifteen essays set Jung in the context of his own time, outline the current practice and theory of Jungian psychology and show how Jungians continue to question and evolve his thinking and apply it to aspects of modern culture and psychoanalysis. The volume includes a full chronology of Jung's life and work, extensively revised and up to date bibliographies, a case study and a glossary. It is an indispensable reference tool for both students and specialists, written by an international team of Jungian analysts and scholars from various disciplines.

Book excerpt: «Hiromi Yoshida's innovative approach to 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' demonstrates how Joyce's Stephen Dedalus reaches a heightened state of creativity through his gradual integration of feminine elements into his psyche. This illuminating and stunning analysis presents a valuable contribution to psychoanalytic feminist theory as well as to Joyce studies.» (Nancy Bombaci, Assistant Professor of Writing and Literature, Mitchell College, New London, Connecticut).
Download or read book Joyce & Jung written by Hiromi Yoshida and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joyce and Jung offers a provocatively original chapter-by-chapter analysis of Stephen Dedalus' psychosexual growth in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The author frames this within the Jungian soul-portrait gallery known as the «four stages of eroticism» in which Eve, Helen, Mary, and Sophia are the soul-portraits of Western civilization, drawing the collective eros into the psychic field to be witnessed as universal spectacle. In James Joyce's twentieth-century classic, Stephen's soul-portraits are the mother, the prostitute, the Virgin Mary, and the Bird-Girl.
Book Synopsis Towards a Jungian Theory of the Ego by : Karen Evers-Fahey
Download or read book Towards a Jungian Theory of the Ego written by Karen Evers-Fahey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their prevalence and weight in many of his collected works and letters, Jung did not articulate a general theory of the ego and consciousness. Towards a Jungian Theory of the Ego examines the development of Jung’s concept of the ego as he expanded and revised this concept, from his earliest formulations about consciousness while a student, to his mature thoughts at the end of his life. Drawing on Ego Psychology as a theoretical framework, Evers-Fahey proposes that Jung uses the concept of ego in four distinct ways and that he developed and used his ego concept based on two discrete paradigms. These distinctions explain the confusion and ambiguity found when examining the development of Jung’s analytical psychology over his lifetime. This book provides an examination of ego development and ego defenses based on a unique Jungian standpoint, as well as discussion of the relationship between the ego and the Self and the ego and ‘the individuum’. Furthermore, the inclusion of a historical framework helps to place the development of these concepts in context. This book proposes a theory of ego psychology based on Jungian theory rather than traditional psychoanalytic theory, thereby filling a gap in the knowledge of Jungian theory. The book will be essential reading for academics and postgraduate students engaged in the study of Jungian psychology and psychoanalytic theory and will also be valued by those interested in Jung and ego psychology more generally.
Book Synopsis The Jungian Strand in Transatlantic Modernism by : Jay Sherry
Download or read book The Jungian Strand in Transatlantic Modernism written by Jay Sherry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studies of psychology’s role in modernism, Carl Jung is usually relegated to a cameo appearance, if he appears at all. This book rethinks his place in modernist culture during its formative years, mapping Jung’s influence on a surprisingly vast transatlantic network of artists, writers, and thinkers. Jay Sherry sheds light on how this network grew and how Jung applied his unique view of the image-making capacity of the psyche to interpret such modernist icons as James Joyce and Pablo Picasso. His ambition to bridge the divide between the natural and human sciences resulted in a body of work that attracted a cohort of feminists and progressives involved in modern art, early childhood education, dance, and theater.

Book excerpt: Advance Praise for Louis Breger's FREUD "Louis Breger's rich and readable study of Freud offers a thoughtfully complex account of a great but flawed man. Everyone with an interest in psychoanalysis and the psychoanalytic movement will enjoy exploring, grappling with, arguing about, and learning from this absolutely fascinating book."-JUDITH VIORST, AUTHOR, Necessary Losses and Imperfect Control "Written with brilliance and insight, Freud: Darkness in the Midst of Vision takes us on a daring, at times chilling, journey to the early years of psychoanalysis, revealing both the human weaknesses and the professional triumphs of its founder. . . . Cutting away the accretions of fabrication and romance cloaking Sigmund Freud, Breger has reinstated historical honesty to its rightful, high place, but the figure who emerges at the end of this breathlessly honest biography is quite as extraordinary as the legend concocted by Freud and perpetuated by his followers. Fresh, vigorous, and lucid."-PHILIP M. BROMBERG, Ph.D., CLINICAL PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY "Louis Breger's fine new biography of Freud is a welcome contribution to the existing literature and a corrective to much of it. It is also one of the best intellectual histories of the origin and development of psychoanalysis I have read in recent years. Breger is to be commended for his original research, the objectivity of his views, and the elegance and grace of his writing."-DEIRDRE BAIR, NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER FOR Samuel Beckett AND AUTHOR OF A FORTHCOMING BIOGRAPHY OF CARL JUNG "Finally, the Freud biography we have long been waiting for. With the history of Europe in the background, we follow with fascination Freud's journey from an impoverished childhood filled with losses to worldly fame, ending in exile in England. We come to understand the impact of Freud's difficult personality on the development of his brilliant as well as questionable theoretical ideas. Breger writes with compassion and fairness toward Freud as well as toward the many interesting personalities who cross his life, with their complicated relationships to the great man."-SOPHIE FREUD, FREUD'S GRANDDAUGHTER AND PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIAL WORK, SIMMONS COLLEGE "Louis Breger's magnificent book is the definitive work on the personal psychology of Sigmund Freud. it brilliantly illuminates how the darkness in Freud's vision has affected psychoanalytic history. This book will be central for psychoanalytic scholarship for decades to come."-GEORGE E. ATWOOD, Ph.D., PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY, RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Book Synopsis The Postsecular Sacred by : David Tacey
Download or read book The Postsecular Sacred written by David Tacey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Postsecular Sacred: Jung, Soul and Meaning in an Age of Change, David Tacey presents a unique psychological study of the postsecular, adding a Jungian perspective to a debate shaped by sociology, philosophy and religious studies. In this interdisciplinary exploration, Tacey looks at the unexpected return of the sacred in Western societies, and how the sacred is changing our understanding of humanity and culture. Beginning with Jung’s belief that the psyche has never been secular, Tacey examines the new desire for spiritual experience and presents a logic of the unconscious to explain it. Tacey argues that what has fuelled the postsecular momentum is the awareness that something is missing, and the idea that this could be buried in the unconscious is dawning on sociologists and philosophers. While the instinct to connect to something greater is returning, Tacey shows that this need not imply that we are regressing to superstitions that science has rejected. The book explores indigenous spirituality in the context of the need to reanimate the world, not by going back to the past but by being inspired by it. There are chapters on ecopsychology and quantum physics, and, using Australia as a case study, the book also examines the resistance of secular societies to becoming postsecular. Approaching postsecularism through a Jungian perspective, Tacey argues that we should understand God in a manner that accords with the time, not go back to archaic, rejected images of divinity. The sacred is returning in an age of terrorism, and this is not without significance in terms of the ‘explosive’ impact of spirituality in our time. Innovative and relevant to the world we live in, this will be of great interest to academics and scholars of Jungian studies, anthropology, indigenous studies, philosophy, religious studies and sociology due to its transdisciplinary scope. It would also be a useful resource for analytical psychologists, Jungian analysts and psychotherapists.
Book Synopsis Florence 98, Destruction and Creation Personal and Cultural Transformation by : Mary Ann Mattoon
Download or read book Florence 98, Destruction and Creation Personal and Cultural Transformation written by Mary Ann Mattoon and published by Daimon. This book was released on 1999 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourteenth Congress for Analytical Psychology was held August 23-28, 1998 in the ancient city of Florence, Italy. The theme, "Destruction and Creation: Personal and Cultural Transformations," is especially appropriate to the Italian setting, with that nation’s history of destruction, both from nature and from human activity, and its tradition – especially in Florence – of creative individuals and institutions. The theme is fitting, also, to the context of Jungian psychology, with its emphasis on these and other pairs of opposites, with their integral role in psychic wholeness. Acknowledging, also, that destruction is indispensable to creation, some Jungians prefer the term "creative unconscious" to the traditional "collective unconscious."
Book Synopsis Religion and the Politics of Peace and Conflict by : Linda Hogan
Download or read book Religion and the Politics of Peace and Conflict written by Linda Hogan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Connections Between Religion And Violence are Complex and multifaceted. From the conflicts in Middle East and the Balkans to those in Southeast Asia and beyond, religion frames and legitimates political violence. Moreover, in international relations since 9/11, religious language and metaphors have acquired a new significance. In this context the emerging consensus appears to be not only that violence is intrinsic to religion, but also that religions incite, legitimate, and intensify political violence. However, such an unambiguous indictment of religions is incomplete in that it fails both to appreciate significant counter examples and to recognize the diversity that exists within religions on the issue of violence, particularly the religious roots of pacifism and the ethics of non-violence. This collection explores aspects of this ambivalence between religion and violence. It focuses on traditions of legitimation and pacifism within the three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and concludes with an examination of this ambivalence as it unfolds in each tradition's engagement with the politics of gender. "The essays in this collection suggest that the tasks of ameliorating irrational fears and encouraging the recognition of irreducible interreligious complementarity are tasks that can and should be shared by Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Moreover these traditions are replete with exemplars, both historical and contemporary, who witness to the possibilities for interreligious dialogue and understanding. For religious persons, undoubtedly, these issues are particularly challenging since they require us to confront the complexities and limitations of our own traditions while also responding to their often-radical demands. Yet in these complexities lie the possibilities for the religions to develop a greater sense of mutual understanding. since it is in these complexities that the commonalities between the religions on the matter of political violence are found."---from the Introduction

Book Synopsis Ambiguous Borderlands by : Erik Mortenson
Download or read book Ambiguous Borderlands written by Erik Mortenson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the shadow in mid-twentieth-century America appeared across a variety of genres and media including poetry, pulp fiction, photography, and film. Drawing on an extensive framework that ranges from Cold War cultural histories to theorizations of psychoanalysis and the Gothic, Erik Mortenson argues that shadow imagery in 1950s and 1960s American culture not only reflected the anxiety and ambiguity of the times but also offered an imaginative space for artists to challenge the binary rhetoric associated with the Cold War. After contextualizing the postwar use of shadow imagery in the wake of the atomic bomb, Ambiguous Borderlands looks at shadows in print works, detailing the reemergence of the pulp fiction crime fighter the Shadow in the late-1950s writings of Sylvia Plath, Amiri Baraka, and Jack Kerouac. Using Freudian and Jungian conceptions of the unconscious, Mortenson then discusses Kerouac’s and Allen Ginsberg’s shared dream of a “shrouded stranger” and how it shaped their Beat aesthetic. Turning to the visual, Mortenson examines the dehumanizing effect of shadow imagery in the Cold War photography of Robert Frank, William Klein, and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Mortenson concludes with an investigation of the use of chiaroscuro in 1950s film noir and the popular television series The Twilight Zone, further detailing how the complexities of Cold War society were mirrored across these media in the ubiquitous imagery of light and dark. From comics to movies, Beats to bombs, Ambiguous Borderlands provides a novel understanding of the Cold War cultural context through its analysis of the image of the shadow in midcentury media. Its interdisciplinary approach, ambitious subject matter, and diverse theoretical framing make it essential reading for anyone interested in American literary and popular culture during the fifties and sixties.
