Book Synopsis Candidate Character Traits in Presidential Elections by : David B. Holian
Download or read book Candidate Character Traits in Presidential Elections written by David B. Holian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voter perceptions of the personal traits of presidential candidates are widely regarded to be important influences on the vote. Media pundits frequently explain the outcome of presidential elections in terms of the personal appeal of the candidates. Despite the emphasis on presidential character traits in the media, the scholarly investigation in this area is limited. In this book, David Holian and Charles Prysby set out to examine the effect that trait perceptions have on the vote, how these perceptions are shaped by other attitudes and evaluations, and what types of voters are most likely to cast a ballot on the basis of the character traits of the presidential candidates. Using the American National Election Studies (ANES) surveys, the authors find that traits do have a very substantial effect on the vote, that different candidates have advantages on different traits, and that the opinions expressed by media pundits about how the candidates are viewed by the voters are often simplistic, and sometimes quite mistaken. Character traits are important to voters, but we need a better and more complete understanding of how and why these factors influence voters. An essential read which provides a clear and original argument to all those interested in furthering their understanding of the importance of candidate character traits for the quality of American elections and democracy.

Book Synopsis Advances in Statistical Methods for the Genetic Dissection of Complex Traits in Plants by : Yuan-Ming Zhang
Download or read book Advances in Statistical Methods for the Genetic Dissection of Complex Traits in Plants written by Yuan-Ming Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been widely used in the genetic dissection of complex traits. However, there are still limits in current GWAS statistics. For example, (1) almost all the existing methods do not estimate additive and dominance effects in quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) detection; (2) the methods for detecting QTN-by-environment interaction (QEI) are not straightforward and do not estimate additive and dominance effects as well as additive-by-environment and dominance-by-environment interaction effects, leading to unreliable results; and (3) no or too simple polygenic background controls have been employed in QTN-by-QTN interaction (QQI) detection. As a result, few studies of QEI and QQI for complex traits have been reported based on multiple-environment experiments. Recently, new statistical tools, including 3VmrMLM, have been developed to address these needs in GWAS. In 3VmrMLM, all the trait-associated effects, including QTN, QEI and QQI related effects, are compressed into a single effect-related vector, while all the polygenic backgrounds are compressed into a single polygenic effect matrix. These compressed parameters can be accurately and efficiently estimated through a unified mixed model analysis. To further validate these new GWAS methods, particularly 3VmrMLM, they should be rigorously tested in real data of various plants and a wide range of other species.
Book Synopsis The Periodic Table of Character Traits by : Michael Lawson
Download or read book The Periodic Table of Character Traits written by Michael Lawson and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Since the beginning of time, mankind has been on a tireless quest for the ultimate revelation: to discover who he is and why he exists. There are no two greater questions that we must all come face-to-face with in order to truly be alive. You can do what so many others (including me) have done and avoid these questions by engaging in things that don't matter, assigning value to things that don't last, and succumbing to the "natural order" in an attempt to make sense of it all. Or, you can look for true meaning in your life that cannot be found in things or even out there in another person. This is a book that must be studied and not just read. It will force you to examine the character traits that have shaped you to leading the life you live and explains them into two types: Core and Destructive. Core are those traits that as we embrace and live out will begin to discover our true worth and purpose. Destructive are those traits that are like a cancer because they will destroy us and our relationships and therefore need to be eradicated - cut out. Features: A Final Review of each core character trait designed to force you to be honest with yourself An Elemental Check and Action plan that will ask you tough questions so you can check yourself against each core character trait and then take action Benefits: It will make you take a hard look at yourself and the traits you think you possess It will make you think and want to be better Design your life Live in the now Discover who you are Discover why you exist
Book Synopsis Personality Traits and Drug Consumption by : Elaine Fehrman
Download or read book Personality Traits and Drug Consumption written by Elaine Fehrman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the psychological traits associated with drug consumption through the statistical analysis of a new database with information on 1885 respondents and use of 18 drugs. After reviewing published works on the psychological profiles of drug users and describing the data mining and machine learning methods used, it demonstrates that the personality traits (five factor model, impulsivity, and sensation seeking) together with simple demographic data make it possible to predict the risk of consumption of individual drugs with a sensitivity and specificity above 70% for most drugs. It also analyzes the correlations of use of different substances and describes the groups of drugs with correlated use, identifying significant differences in personality profiles for users of different drugs. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and first-year PhD students, as well as researchers and practitioners. Although no previous knowledge of machine learning, advanced data mining concepts or modern psychology of personality is assumed, familiarity with basic statistics and some experience in the use of probabilities would be helpful. For a more detailed introduction to statistical methods, the book provides recommendations for undergraduate textbooks.

Book Synopsis The Cognitive Foundations of Personality Traits by : Shulamith Kreitler
Download or read book The Cognitive Foundations of Personality Traits written by Shulamith Kreitler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly anything in psychology is as irking as the trait concept. Psychologists and laypersons alike use primarily adjective trait-names to characterize and even concep tualize the individuals they encounter. There are more than a hundred well-defined personality traits and a great many questionnaires for their assessment, some of which are designed to assess the same or very similar traits. Little is known about their ontogenetic development and even less about their underlying dynamics. Psy choanalytic theory was invoked for explaining the psychodynamics underlying a few personality traits without, however, presenting sufficient empirical evidence for the validity of these interpretations. In a reductionistic vein, behaviorally inclined psy chologists have propounded the thesis that all traits are acquired behaviors. Yet, this view neither reduces the number of personality tests nor explains the resistance of traits to modification by means of reward and punishment. Dissatisfied with these and some other less well-known approaches to person ality traits, we decided to explore whether applying our psychosemantic theory of cognition to the trait concept would do better. The way we had to follow was anything but easy.
