Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Moses received the 10 commandments from God written on the tablets of stone, he also received details on how to construct a temple like structure called the tabernacle. Housing the Ark of the Covenant and the presence of God, the tabernacle became the centre for spiritual activity among the 12 tribes of Israel while wandering in the wilderness. The temple built by King Solomon and many later churches and cathedrals were built according to the same pattern. As well, many of the articles and rituals from the modern Christian church can trace their origins back to the tabernacle. The New Testament idea that our bodies are the temple of God is at the very heart of this book, The Tabernacle as a Model for Meditation. Among the many thousands of readings given by American psychic Edgar Cayce are found numerous references to the tabernacle as a pattern for the human body. Written symbolically into the structure and articles of the tabernacle is found a parallel to the body of man. The duties and functions of the priests are symbolic of inner physiological, psychological and spiritual processes. The means to worship and enter into this holy structure (our own bodies) is through the practice of meditation. Some meditation techniques based on the Edgar Cayce readings are discussed. In exploring the ancient Chinese medical and meditation texts, we find that they too recognize a tabernacle like structure in the energy patterns of the body. While the tabernacle sat in the desert interacting with the 12 tribes, the Chinese structure is in the energy body and interacts with 12 meridians. It seems that even in other cultures the body is indeed the temple of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reverend Archer Ellsworth examines the nature of the tabernacle, a small and portable earthen dwelling which housed the Israelites during the Biblical era. A portable yet distinctive dwelling, the tabernacle would accompany the Jews through their exodus from Egypt, and into the lands of Canaan. For the most part, the tabernacle is mentioned in the Book of Exodus, which details its physical characteristics and purpose as mobile housing and a gathering place for the transitory Jewish peoples. Most vitally, God ordered Moses to remove adornments from the tabernacle while continuing to use it throughout his people's journeys in the unsettled countryside and into the Promised Land. Ellsworth Archer (1863 - 1944) was an author, preacher and committed Christian who spent his life in study of the Bible. Working in San Joaquin County, California for most of his adulthood, he was active in the church community of the state and would assist in the establishment of multiple churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assumes questions that perceptive readers of all persuasions might ask about the Bible. These questions pertain both to the nature of the text and the text itself. With regard to the former, its historical development is described in reverse order, back through 16th century England to the definitive Hebrew text from which all modern translations are made, the Leningrad Codex, dated 1008 CE. The development continues through prior centuries, importantly, to the Dead Sea Scrolls, which raise new questions about which text to translate. The Pentateuch throughout is discussed with the question in mind: Is it history or story? The great wealth of information, both material and literary, which archaeology has provided over the last one and half centuries as well as the intensive literary analysis of biblical scholars is brought to bear on the text. The attempt is made to provide information not commonly known to the general reader in searching for an answer to the question. The identification of literary traditions with their theological perspectives serves to show the diversity of the material amidst its overall unity. The traditions, which make up the Old Testament, did not end with our canon, whether Jewish, Catholic or Protestant. A group of these later books, known as Apocrypha, are included in some Bibles but not in others. A large number of other books, known as Pseudepigrapha, represent the continuation of the traditions. Those related to Genesis, as well as the ambivalent status of the Apocrypha, are discussed here.
