Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade or so, systems integration has become a key factor in the operations, strategy and competitive advantage of major corporations in a wide variety of sectors (e.g. computing, automotive, telecommunications, military systems and aerospace). Systems integration is a strategic task that pervades business management not only at the technical level but also at the management and strategic levels. This book shows how and why this new kind of systems integration has evolved into an emerging model of industrial organization whereby firms, and groups of firms, join together different types of knowledge, skill and activity, as well as hardware, software, and human resources to produce new products for the marketplace. This book is the first to systematically explore systems integration from a business and innovation perspective. Contributors delve deeply into the nature, dimensions and dynamics of the new systems integration, deploying research and analytical techniques from a wide variety of disciplines including, the theory of the firm, the history of technology, industrial organization, regional studies, strategic management, and innovation studies. This wealth of research capability provides deep insights into the new model of systems integration and supports this with an abundance of empirical evidence. The book is organized in three main parts. The first part focuses on the history of systems integration. Contributors trace the early history of systems integration using different industrial examples. The second part presents theoretical and analytical aspects of systems integration. Contributions concentrate on the regulatory and cognitive features of systems integration, the relationships between systems integration and regional competitive advantage, and the way in which systems integration supports the competitive advantage of firms. The third part takes industry and firm-level approaches. Contributions focus on different sectors and highlight the specificity of systems integration in various industrial domains, stressing its importance for systems integration in the case of complex capital goods, such as aircraft and telecommunications equipment, as well as consumer goods, such as personal computers and automobiles.

Book excerpt: Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are a common technique used by companies to grow and enter new markets. The success rate of these transactions continues to be less than desired. Information Systems (IS) have been proven to be a key component influencing the success of mergers. While numerous factors have been found to lead to systems integration success, the studies have not analyzed the fit that is required when two organizations and systems are joined. This research focuses on the match between organizational variables of competencies and processes of two merging companies, as well as the match between systems variables of capabilities and technology. The results of this study attempt to show which factors impact systems integration success. Utilizing secondary data sources, measures were gathered for US companies that have experienced M&A between 2008 and 2012. Data points at the time of merger were collected for both the target company and the acquirer, and then transformed into proxy measures for competencies, processes, capabilities, and technology. Each pair was regressed against the measure of systems integration success to measure fit and impact. With statistical outputs, the hypothesis related to technology was found to be partially supported. The study extends the current knowledge on factors impacting M&A success. Determining the most significant variables provides valuable insight to practitioners, as to what factors to focus on for successful integration.

Book excerpt: In April 1991 BusinessWeek ran a cover story entitled, "I Can't Work This ?#!!@ Thing," about the difficulties many people have with consumer products, such as cell phones and VCRs. More than 15 years later, the situation is much the same-but at a very different level of scale. The disconnect between people and technology has had society-wide consequences in the large-scale system accidents from major human error, such as those at Three Mile Island and in Chernobyl. To prevent both the individually annoying and nationally significant consequences, human capabilities and needs must be considered early and throughout system design and development. One challenge for such consideration has been providing the background and data needed for the seamless integration of humans into the design process from various perspectives: human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, training, safety and health, and, in the military, habitability and survivability. This collection of development activities has come to be called human-system integration (HSI). Human-System Integration in the System Development Process reviews in detail more than 20 categories of HSI methods to provide invaluable guidance and information for system designers and developers.

As such, we continue to see implementation horror stories of projects run amuck- going over time and over budget-or information systems that never get fully implemented, requiring Òwork-aroundÓ by employees in order to get things done. Sound familiar? Written especially for C-suite decision makers, this book provides details on how information systems work, and, most importantly, what constitutes successful information systems-ones that work better and last longer. With this understanding, you'll be able to design, build, and implement information systems that maximize the profitability of the company.
