Book excerpt: Approximately 5300 specimens of about 200 species of freshwater fishes of Peninsular Malaysia were examined, and meristic counts and morphometric measurements were recorded. This dissertation is the most inclusive and comprehensive study of Malaysian fishes to date. Osteochilus behnkei and Leiocassis santanensis are described as new species. Botia beauforti, Laides cf. sinensis, Leiocassis ruqosus, and Bagrichthys macracanthus are new records to this area. Positive species identifications of specimens of the genera Notopterus, Labiobarbus, Lobocheilos, Mystacoleucus, Tor, Acantopsis, Botia, Pangio, Leiocassis, Mystus, Achrochordonichthys, Pangasius, Clarias, Kryptopterus, Silurichthys, Brachygobius, Betta, and Chanda is not possible until complete revisions of the species composition of these genera are made. Many species such as Botia hymenophysa and Chaca bankanensis are also found in Sumatra and Borneo, but absent on the mainland of Southeast Asia. On the other hand, many Siamese species such as Botia beauforti and Homaloptera smithi dispersed only to Peninsular Malaysia, but are absent on the Greater Sunda Islands. Peninsular Malaysia is an area of overlap between these two groups of fishes. The degree of endemism is relatively low. Endemic species are represented by only 4 genera and mainly inhabit montane streams or blackwater swamps with extremely high acidity. They include: Homaloptera leonardi, Neolissochilus hendersoni, Parosphromenus nagyi, P. paludicola, Poropuntius birtwistlei, and P. smedleyi. At present, Scleropages formosus is the only freshwater fish of Peninsular Malaysia listed as an endangered species. In light of the large scale habitat alterations in Peninsular Malaysia, with reservoir constructions and deforestation, it is proposed that all endemic species be listed as endangered, and should be monitored on a regular basis.

Book excerpt: A major concern among ecologists in and outside the ASEAN region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. There is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the ASEAN region. Reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands. This volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the Strait of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea.

Book excerpt: Documenting Indigenous Knowledge in Science, Technology and Innovation contains several interesting chapters related to natural resources that are found in Malaysia and how these resources are used by indigenous and/or local people for survival. For example, the availability of marine resources such as fish as a source of protein to humans should be maintained to accommodate the increasing demand by the world’s population. Some approaches to maintain the availability of marine resources, as discussed in this book is the effective conservation strategies, sustainable aquaculture systems and the use of latest technology in the provision of capture data of marine life. The rapid increase in the world population has also changed people's views about the plants that have medicinal value towards the more aggressive use. However, efforts to record and document the medical plants is lacking in Malaysia. In addition to being a key ingredient in traditional medicine, plants such as banana can also be innovated as a renewable energy source. Although the discovery and design of this still new in Malaysia, efforts to further refine these findings should be continued to ensure the availability and sustainability of renewable energy sources. This book is suitable for use by all levels of readers, such as teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists and the general public who need information about the topics included in this book.

The freshwater fishes are one important group that have received little attention. Accordingly, the overarching goal of my study is to investigate the pattern of species richness and analyse the community composition and assemblage structure of fishes in the small streams in Peninsular Malaysia. Small stream habitats appeared to be particularly important repositories of fish biodiversity in this region thus obtaining a reliable census of species occurring in such habitats is critical for conservation and management of biodiversity. Although samplings were far from completed, these habitats support a great variety of species with more than 100 species were recorded from fifty streams sampled in this study. A few are extremely rare with restricted distribution and can thus be considered important in biodiversity conservation of the Peninsular Malaysian ichthyofauna. Human-influenced modification of lowland, headwater stream habitats in Peninsular Malaysia is common and often exemplified by the creation of pools in stretches of rapids and riffles. However, it was not possible to separate pristine and disturbed sites which contained almost identical for species diversity. These findings suggest that local habitat modification does not necessarily cause a decrease in freshwater fish diversity, with only minor negative consequences for other community variables recorded in this study, and therefore raise interesting issues regarding conservation. That said it remains premature to conclude that small stream fishes are insensitive to disturbance and thus their potential utility as bioindicators of disturbance-influenced community changes remain to be confirmed. The maintenance practises being applied to small streams modified for recreational usage were not imposing detectable negative consequences, at least across the sites sampled in this study. The rich diversity of tropical stream environments is the result of both within-habitat (alpha) diversity and between-habitat (beta) diversity. The results showed that there was substantial beta diversity particularly amongst sites that are geographically separated from one another. On the contrary, the lowest beta diversity values were portrayed by contiguous sites. Many fishes exhibited discontinuous patterns of distribution and were considered to be rare while only a handful were widely distributed and abundant. Ordination based on the relative resemblance of fish communities to one another support the existence of two distinct ichthyogeographic divisions in Peninsular Malaysia. It was possible to assign the species recorded to all seven of Rabinowitz's categories of rarity, with at least 10 restricted to a single stream and locally scarce, although not all of these could be described as hyper-endemic. It is recommended that a sizeable augmentation of the existing protected areas is needed to safeguard Malaysia's exceptionally diverse stream-dwelling fauna of which fishes are simply the most well-known inhabitants. Conservation managers should therefore place particular emphasis on small streams since localities in close proximity to one another can exhibit surprisingly high beta diversity, meaning that partial or small-scale habitat protection may prove insufficient.
