Book excerpt: Previous studies by Behrens have provided evidence of systematic behavior in neutron-induced fission cross sections in the incident neutron energy range 3 to 5 MeV. Recently measured fission cross-section ratios revealed this behavior. In this report, these measurements and those of others are used to illustrate the behavior of fission cross sections over the neutron energy range 0.1 MeV to 15 MeV. Similar trends are seen at 0.0253 eV, as revealed by thermal cross-section measurements. 12 figures.

Book excerpt: Recent studies have shown straightforward systematic behavior as a function of constant proton and neutron number for neutron-induced fission cross sections of the actinide elements in the incident-neutron energy range 3 to 5 MeV. In this report, the second in a series, fission cross-section values are studied over the MeV incident-neutron energy range, and at 0.0253 eV. Fission-barrier heights and neutron-binding energies are correlated by constant proton and neutron number; however, these systematic behaviors alone do not explain the trends observed in the fission cross-section values.
Book Synopsis Neutron Cross Sections by : Victoria McLane
Download or read book Neutron Cross Sections written by Victoria McLane and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 2: Neutron Cross Section Curves presents data for total reaction cross sections and related fission parameters as a function of incident-neutron energy. This book covers energy range from 0.01 eV to 200 MeV to exclude crystalline and magnetic effects for slow neutrons and relativistic effects for high energy neutrons. The data in this volume are grouped into sections corresponding to the element of the target nucleus in the neutron-induced reaction. These sections are ordered in increasing atomic number. Within a section, graphical data are presented for the natural element followed by the isotopes of that element in order of increasing atomic mass. A list of the reaction types is provided at the end of each section. This book also provides graphical section, wherein each graphical page is annotated on the outer edge with a symbol for an element or isotope followed by the list of the cross section data for that element or isotope. The data plotted in the graphical section are tagged by a mnemonic consisting of year, laboratory, and author's last name. This tag can be used to find the corresponding reference on the bibliographic pages.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Cross Sections for 95-Mev Neutrons by : James DeJuren
Download or read book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95-Mev Neutrons written by James DeJuren and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross sections of twelve different elements were measured using the neutron beam from the 184-in. cyclotron, operating with deuterons. Bismuth fission ionization chambers were employed as both monitor and detector in conventional 'good geometry' attenuation measurements in the neutron flux emerging from the 3-in. diameter collimating port in the 10-ft-thick concrete shielding. The mean energy of detection of the neutrons in this experiment is estimated to be 95 Mev. Measurements were also made with a monitor and detector placed inside the concrete shielding where an intense neutron flux over a large area could be obtained. Attenuators of four different elements were placed in front of the detector in a 'poor geometry' arrangement so that attenuation was due essentially to inelastic collisions which degrade the neutron energy below the fission threshold. A second detector was placed outside the concrete shielding In the collimated neutron beam in line with the neutron source, absorber, and first detector. Attenuation in it is caused by both inelastic and elastic scattering. By this arrangement the ratio of inelastic to total cross section can be determined directly in one experiment. The nuclear radii as calculated from the observed cross section, using the theory of the transparent nucleus, vary as 1.38 x 10(exp-13) A(exp(1/3)) cm. In this energy range the ratios of the inelastic to total cross sections are all less than one-half.

Download or read book U-235 Neutron Fission Cross Section from 0. 1 to 20. 0 MeV. written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of the U-235 fast neutron fission cross section is discussed based primarily on material contributed and considered at the NEANDC/NEACRP Specialists Meeting on Fast Neutron Fission Cross Sections held at Argonne National Laboratory in June 1976. However, some newer measurements and evaluations are discussed as well. Specifically, recent measurements at ANL over the energy range 0.2 to 8.2 MeV, using several BND's, are reported. Data from the last 10 years are found to be in good agreement with an evaluated average of these data. Suggested problem areas are investigated in terms of their actual significance. It is found that the presently suggested version of ENDF/B-V for the U-235 (n, f) cross section does not represent the data base well and a reconsideration is recommended.

Book excerpt: The neutron-induced fission cross section for /sup 242m/Am(152y) was measured at the Livermore 100-MeV electron linac in the neutron energy range of 0.01 eV to 20 MeV. Fission fragments were detected using a hemispherical fission chamber. The neutron flux was measured below 10 keV using lithium glass scintillators. Above 10 keV, the /sup 242m/Am fission cross section was measured relative to the 235U fission cross section. Below 20 eV, the data were fit with a sum of single-level Breit-Wigner resonances. Results for the distribution of fission widths, the average fission width, and the average level spacing are presented. The fission cross section in the 100 MeV range is compared with previous measurements. 11 references.

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron-induced fission cross sections of /sup 242m/Am and 245Cm have been measured over an energy range of 10−4 eV to approx. 20 MeV in a series of experiments at three facilities during the past several years. The combined results of these measurements, in which only sub-milligram quantities of enriched isotopes were used, yield cross sections with uncertainties of approximately 5% below 10 MeV relative to the 235U standard cross section used to normalize the data. We summarize the resonance analysis of the /sup 242m/Am(n, f) cross section in the eV region. Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations of the detailed fission cross sections of 235U and 245Cm have been carried out over the energy region from 0.1 to 5 MeV and these results are compared with our experimental data.

Book excerpt: A continuation is given of the fission-cross-section ratio measurements in progress at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Preliminary results are provided for the 24°Pu/235U and 242Pu/235U ratios from 0.02 to 30 MeV and 0.1 to 30 MeV, respectively. Using the threshold-cross-section method, the ratios were normalized to the values 1.368 +- 0.030 and 1.116 +- 0.025, respectively, from 1.75 to 4.00 MeV.
