Book Synopsis Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) by : Bruce A. Bohm
Download or read book Flavonoids of the Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) written by Bruce A. Bohm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavonoids are secondary plant products that have previously been shown to be helpful in determining relationships among plant groups. This work presents comprehensively the occurrence, patterns of variation, and systematic and evolutionary importance of flavonoids in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), the largest family of flowering plants (23,000 species). It gathers together the more than 2500 reports of flavonoids in Asteraceae published between 1950 to the present and interprets these data in context of new taxonomic (especially generic) alignments. The authors discuss flavonoid patterns with reference to modern phylogenetic studies based on morphology and DNA data. This book provides, therefore, the most exhaustive synthesis and evaluation of the systematic and evolutionary import of flavonoids ever accomplished for any large family of angiosperms.

Book Synopsis A Revision of the Tribal and Subtribal Limits of the Heliantheae (Asteraceae) by : Harold Ernest Robinson
Download or read book A Revision of the Tribal and Subtribal Limits of the Heliantheae (Asteraceae) written by Harold Ernest Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribe Heliantheae is expanded to include the genera previously placed in the tribe Helenieae and many genera from the Senecioneae. Thirty-five subtribes are recognized and described, and the more than 265 genera are listed with known, validly described synonyms. A theoretical key to subtribes is provided. Various structural and chemical characteristics are reviewed, and emphasis is given to resin duct patterns, presence of fiber-sheaths in disk corollas, and patterns of striations in achenes. The Heliantheae is considered a member of the subfamily Asteroideae in a position parallel to and more advanced than the Eupatorieae.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeds are a vital part of life on earth. They are fundamental for plant reproduction, and many seeds play an important role in the diet of man and domestic and wild animals. Knowledge of the appearance of seeds - seed morphology - is of great importance to botany and seed identification in relation to: seed setting, quarantine work, forensic work, seed poisening, studies of seed dispersal, seed banks and archaeological studies.;This bibliography contains 3775 references and is divided in two parts: handbooks, and articles and monographs. In the latter the bibliographical reference is supplemented by information of importance to seed identificaiton: genera mentioned in articles, keys, descriptions, drawings, photograph, scanning electron micrographs, anatomy and chemical methods. The index of authors contains the names of an extensive number of authors, cited in the bibliography, and in the index of genera more than 3900 genera, described in one or more of the publications are cited.

Book excerpt: Dictionary of South American Trees provides a single-source reference for botanists, biologists, ecologists, and climatologists on the many native trees in South America. The index lets readers find a tree in four languages, by its common name, or abbreviation, followed by taxonomy that includes common uses for each part of the tree. Using this information, scientists and students can identify and classify plants, their growth structure and environment, the uses of their products, and alternative options with similar characteristics. Complete coverage of all native South American trees—the only single-source reference for botanists, biologists, ecologists and climatologists working in this diverse and changing region Includes taxonomy at genera, species, sub-species, and varietal levels, providing information from the most basic level up and allowing readers to identify their subjects using numerous criteria Indicates Latin, English, French, and Spanish names as well as common names and abbreviations, facilitating accurate and efficient identification Provides growth information, climatology, ecology and uses for the tree to provide insight into each tree as well as for comparative purposes when seeking similar tree-based resources
