Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of the vernacularization and popularization of learned medical knowledge in the late seventeenth century, a particularly significant moment in English history on account of the social and cultural transformations in progress at the time. Starting with a survey of the medical texts that were translated from Latin into English in such a pivotal period, the book provides an insight into their context of production and an analysis of the actual translation strategies and procedures that were exploited at the macro- and micro-textual levels in order to disseminate the specialized subject and language of learned medicine to a wider, non-specialized audience. In addition to some very popular texts, including Nicholas Culpeper’s 1649 unauthorized translation of the Royal College of Physicians’s Pharmacopoeia Londinensis, the volume also discusses more obscure and previously neglected publications, which nonetheless played a fundamental role in the popularization of learned medicine.

This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern almanacs have received relatively little academic attention over the years, despite being the first true form of British mass media. While their major purpose was to provide annual information about the movements of the stars and the corresponding effects on Earth, most contained a range of other material, including advice on preventative and remedial medicine for humans and animals. Based on the most extensive research to date into the relationship between the popular press, early modern medical beliefs and practices, this study argues that these cheap, annual booklets played a major role in shaping contemporary medical beliefs and practices in early modern England. Beginning with an overview of printed vernacular medical literature, the book examines in depth the genre of almanacs, their authors, target and actual audiences. It discusses the various types of medical information and advice in almanacs, preventative and remedial medicine for humans, as well as ‘non-commercial’ and ‘commercial’ medicines promoted in almanacs, and the under-explored topic of animal health care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the fascinating history of female genital cosmetic surgery, Camille Nurka traces the origins of contemporary ideas of genital normality. Over the past twenty years, Western women have become increasingly worried about the aesthetic appearance of their labia minora and are turning to cosmetic surgery to achieve the ideal vulva: a clean slit with no visible protrusion of the inner lips. Long labia minora are described by medical experts as ‘hypertrophied,’ a term that implies deformity and the atypical. But how far back does the diagnosis of labial hypertrophy go, and where did it originate? Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery tells the story of the female genitalia from the alien world of ancient Greek gynaecology to the colonial period of exploration and exploitation up to the present day. Bringing together historical, medical, and theoretical documentation and commentary, Nurka uncovers a long tradition of pathologizing female anatomy, a history sure to be of interest to any reader who wishes to know more about how medicine shapes our commonly held ideals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A plaine and easie waie to remedie a horse' is the first complete text to focus exclusively on the health and illness of the most important animals in early modern England. It also follows on and further develops the subject of early modern veterinary medicine introduced by Louise Hill Curth in 'The Care of Brute Beasts: a social and cultural study of veterinary medicine in early modern England'. This book is divided into three sections which start by providing an overview of the evolution of English hippiatric medicine from ancient and medieval times into the early modern period. The second section moves on to the structures of practice which include the astrological principles between preventative, remedial and surgical medicine for horses, followed by an in-depth discussion of how such knowledge was disseminated through the oral, manuscript and print culture.

Book excerpt: This three-volume set provides a comprehensive yet concise global exploration of health and medicine from ancient times to the present day, helping readers to trace the development of concepts and practices around the world. From archaeological evidence of trepanning during prehistoric times to medieval Europe's conception of the four humors to present-day epidemics of diabetes and heart disease, health concerns and medical practices have changed considerably throughout the centuries. Health and Medicine through History: From Ancient Practices to 21st-Century Innovations is broken down into four distinct time periods: antiquity through the Middle Ages, the 15th through 18th centuries, the 19th century, and the 20th century and beyond. Each of these sections features the same 13-chapter structure, touching on a diverse array of topics such as women's health, medical institutions, common diseases, and representations of sickness and healing in the arts. Coverage is global, with the histories of the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania compared and contrasted throughout. The book also features a large collection of primary sources, including document excerpts and statistical data. These resources offer readers valuable insights and foster analytical and critical thinking skills.

Book excerpt: In Hey Presto! Swift and the Quacks, Hugh Ormsby-Lennon reveals how medicine shows, both ancient and modern, galvanized Jonathan Swift's imagination and inspired his wittiest satiric voices. Swift dubbed these multifaceted traveling entertainments his Stage-itinerant or "Mountebank's Stage." In the course of arguing that the stage-itinerant formed an irresistible model for A Tale of a Tub, Ormsby-Lennon also surmises that the mountebank's stage will disclose that missing link, long sought, that connects the dual objects of Swift's ire: gross corruptions in both Religion and Learning.
