Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for lnformation and Numerica/ Data Analysis and Synthesis (C/NDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficia! to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After fi ve years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of ali concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and App/ied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. Ali back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 21 (thesis year 1976) a total of 10,586 theses titles from 25 Canadian and 219 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational approaches offer researchers unique insights into the structure, characteristics, and properties of macromolecules. However, with applications across a broad range of areas, various methods have been developed for exploring macromolecules in in silico; therefore, it can be difficult for researchers to select the most appropriate method for their specific needs. Covering both biopolymers and synthetic polymers, In-Silico Approaches to Macromolecular Chemistry familiarizes readers with the theoretical tools and software appropriate for such studies. In addition to providing essential background knowledge on both computational tools and macromolecules, the book presents in-depth studies of in silico macromolecule chemistry, discusses and compares these with experimental studies, and highlights the future potential for such approaches. Written by specialists in their respective fields, this book helps students, researchers, and industry professionals gain a clear overview of the field, and furnishes them with the knowledge needed to understand and select the most appropriate tools for conducting and analyzing computational studies. - Highlights in silico studies of both bio and synthetic macromolecules in one book - Supports both learners and experts though a combination of detailed guidance and perspectives on the future potential for in silico approaches to macromolecules - Familiarizes readers with theoretical tools and software helping them select the best approach for their specific needs

Book excerpt: Azoles are a broad and promising class of five-membered heterocyclic compounds containing from one up to five nitrogen atom(s) that can also contain sulfur or oxygen atoms. Widely used as potent antifungal agents, various azole derivatives have also demonstrated many other promising biological properties. This book covers studies of several types of thiazole-based heterocyclic scaffolds, the development of 4-thiazolidinone and thiazole derivatives with heterocyclic fragments as potential candidates for new drugs against trypanosomiasis, numerous synthetic approaches for the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles, the application of N-azole, N,S-azole, and N,O-azole as well as their derivatives as retarders of metallic corrosion, and the integration of azoles in materials used for renewable energy processing and applications and wood treatment.

As in previous editions, the emphasis remains on a unified treatment of the material, exploring chemical aspects such as elastomer synthesis and curing, through recent theoretical developments and characterization of equilibrium and dynamic properties, to the final applications of rubber, including tire engineering and manufacturing. Updated material stresses the continuous relationship between ongoing research in synthesis, physics, structure and mechanics of rubber technology and industrial applications. Special attention is paid to recent advances in rubber-like elasticity theory and new processing techniques for elastomers. Exciting new developments in green tire manufacturing and tire recycling are covered. - Provides a complete survey of elastomers for engineers and researchers in a unified treatment: from chemical aspects like elastomer synthesis and curing to the final applications of rubber, including tire engineering and manufacturing - Contains important updates to several chapters, including elastomer synthesis, characterization, viscoelastic behavior, rheology, reinforcement, tire engineering, and recycling - Includes a new chapter on the burgeoning field of bioelastomers

Book excerpt: Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.
