Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the systematic synthesis of bis-azapentadienyl-ruthenium-phosphine complexes. The synthetic approach involves the treatment of Cl2Ru(PPh3)3 with potassium tert-butylazapentadienide reagent. The reactivity of this parent compound with other 2e- donor ligands is investigated. These resultant complexes' reactivity with triflic acid is also studied. Treatment of Cl2Ru(PPh3)3 with potassium tert-butylazapentadienide produces [(1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl]2Ru(PPh3)2 (1). Compound 1 undergoes single substitution of one of the triphenylphosphines when treated with PMe3, dmpe, P(OMe)3, CNCMe3, CO, and PEt3 at room temperature, resulting in [(1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl]2Ru(PPh3)(L) (2, L = PMe3; 3, L= dmpe; 4, L = P(OMe)3; 5, L = CNCMe3; 6, L = CO; 7, L = PEt3). By increasing the reaction time of 1 with PEt3, double substitution of both triphenylphosphines occurs, resulting in [(1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl]2Ru(PEt3)2 (8). Compounds 1 - 8 possess a pseudo-octahedral geometry where both ancillary ligands sit trans to the C3's of the azapentadienyl ligands. Compounds 1 - 4, 7 and 8 exhibit a ligand orientation in which both ancillary ligands sit in the mouth of each azapentadienyl ligand, denoted as mC3/mC3. In contrast, 5 exhibits a ligand arrangement where the PPh3 sits in the mouth of one azapentadienyl ligand while CNCMe3 sits on the backbone of the other azapentadienyl ligand. Other double substitution reactions occur when 1 is treated with PMe3, P(OMe)3, and dmpe in THF at reflux, resulting in [(1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl]2Ru(L)x (9, L = PMe3, x = 2; 10, L = P(OMe3), x = 2; 11, L = dmpe, x = 1). Compounds 9 and 10 exist in solution as an equilibrium mixture of two structural isomers. The two isomers in solution have either a mC3/mC3 or mC3/bC1 ligand orientation. Treatment of 8, 9 and 10 with triflic acid results in dicationic products, {[(1,2,3-[eta]3)-(CH2CHCHCH=N(H)(CMe3)]2Ru(L)2}2+( -O3SCF3)2 (12, L = PEt3; 13, L = PMe3; 14, L = P(OMe)3), in which both azapentadienyl nitrogen atoms have been protonated. The protonated product, 12, shows a ligand conversion from mC3/mC3 (seen in 8) to mC3/bC3. Upon protonation, 9 and 10 each convert to a single isomer, 12 and 13, respectively. Like 12, compound 13 possesses a mC3/bC3 orientation while 14 has a ligand orientation in which the azapentadienyl ligands appear to be mC3/mC3. Treatment of 2, 4 and 5 with triflic acid results in multiple isomers of the diprotonated {[(1,2,3-[eta]3)-CH2CHCHCH=N(H)(CMe3)]2Ru(PPh3)(L)}2+( -O3SCF3)2 (15, L = PMe3; 16, L = P(OMe)3; 17, L = CNCMe3). All of the compounds have been characterized, in part, by NMR spectroscopy, and the structures of 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 12 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the systematic synthesis of azapentadienyl-M-phosphine complexes (M = Co, Rh, Ir). The key synthetic approach involves the treatment of chloro-Mphosphine precursors with potassium tert-butylazapentadienide reagent. The reactivity of the parent azapentadienyl compounds with triflic acid and 2e- donor ligands are also investigated. Treatment of (Cl)Co(PMe3)3 with potassium tert-butylazapentadienide produces ((1,2,3- [eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl)Co(PMe3)3 (1). Compound 1 undergoes ligand substitution reactions with trimethyl phosphite and carbon monoxide, generating ((1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tertbutylazapentadienyl) Co(PMe3)2L (2, L = P(OMe)3; 3, L = CO). Compounds 1-3 react readily with 1 equiv of triflic acid (HO3SCF3) at the azapentadienyl nitrogen, producing the corresponding [eta]4-(tert-butylamino)butadiene-cobalt complexes (4-6). One of the key features of these monoprotonated complexes is the very long Co-C4 bond distances, indicating that [eta]3- resonance structures are contributing to the overall bonding picture. Treatment of compound 4 with P(OMe)3 or CO leads to formation of Co(PMe3)2[P(OMe)3]3 +O3SCF3 - (7) or Co(PMe3)3(CO)2 +O3SCF3 - (8), respectively, and both cases lead to displacement of (tertbutylamino)butadiene (rather than PMe3 ligand exchange). Further addition of triflic acid to 5 leads to a second protonation at nitrogen, yielding the corresponding ammonium salt 9. Compound 9 possesses an [eta]4-(tert-butylammonium)butadiene ligand with a strong Co-C4 interaction. Treatment of [(cyclooctene)2Rh([mu]-Cl)]2 with 4 equiv of PR3 (R = Me, Et), followed by potassium tert-butylazapentadienide, produces 16e- ((1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tertbutylazapentadienyl) Rh(PR3)2 (10, R = Me; 16, R = Et). Similarly, the reaction of [(cyclooctene)2Rh([mu]-Cl)]2 with 6 equiv of PMe3, followed by potassium tertbutylazapentadienide, generates 18e- ((1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tert-butylazapentadienyl)Rh(PMe3)3 (13). These neutral compounds react cleanly with 1 equiv of triflic acid. In each case, the primary site of reactivity is the nitrogen atom, leading to the formation of monoprotonation products (11, 14, and 17). When the monoprotonated compounds are treated with additional triflic acid, the second protonation occurs at the rhodium center, producing unstable metal-hydrides. These species reductively eliminate protonated tert-butylcrotonaldimine and ultimately produce isolable octahedral Rh(III) complexes (12, 15 and 18) after addition of a third equiv of triflic acid. The reaction of [(cyclooctene)2Ir([mu]-Cl)]2 with 4 or 6 equiv of PEt3, followed by potassium tert-butylazapentadienide, leads to the formation of ((1,2,3-[eta]3)-5-tertbutylazapentadienyl) Ir(PEt3)x (20, x = 2; 24, x = 3). Iridium compound 20 reacts with triflic acid at the metal center, producing an iridium-hydride product, 21, in which the azapentadienyl ligand coordinates in an unusual [eta]3, [eta]1-fashion, while iridium compound 24 reacts at nitrogen to produce the corresponding [eta]4-butadiene product, 25. The monoprotonated iridium compounds react with additional acid at nitrogen. In the case of monoprotonated compound 21, treatmentwith chloride (to release N from Ir), followed by addition of acid, produces the N-protonated [eta]3- tert-butylazapentadienyl product (23). Similarly, treatment of monoprotonated compound 25 with additional acid leads to a second protonation at nitrogen and production of the [eta]4-(tertbutylammonium) butadiene product (26).

Book excerpt: The products and mechanisms of the thermal reactions of several complexes of the general structure (PMe3)4Ru(X)(Y) and (DMPM)2Ru(X)(Y) where X and Y are hydride, aryl, and benzyl groups, have been investigated. The mechanism of decomposition depends critically on the structure of the complex and the medium in which the thermolysis is carried out. The alkyl hydride complexes are do not react with alkane solvent, but undergo C-H activation processes with aromatic solvents by several different mechanisms. Thermolysis of (PMe3)4Ru(Ph)(Me) or (PMe3)4Ru(Ph)2 leads to the ruthenium benzyne complex (PMe3)4Ru([eta]2-C6H4) (1) by a mechanism which involves reversible dissociation of phosphine. In many ways its chemistry is analogous to that of early rather than late organo transition metal complexes. The synthesis, structure, variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and reactivity of ruthenium complexes containing aryloxide or arylamide ligands are reported. These complexes undergo cleavage of a P-C bond in coordinated trimethylphosphine, insertion of CO and CO2 and hydrogenolysis. Mechanistic studies on these reactions are described. The generation of a series of reactive ruthenium complexes of the general formula (PMe3)4Ru(R)(enolate) is reported. Most of these enolates have been shown to bind to the ruthenium center through the oxygen atom. Two of the enolate complexes 8 and 9 exist in equilibrium between the O- and C-bound forms. The reactions of these compounds are reported, including reactions to form oxygen-containing metallacycles. The structure and reactivity of these ruthenium metallacycles is reported, including their thermal chemistry and reactivity toward protic acids, electrophiles, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and trimethylsilane. 243 refs., 10 tabs.

Book excerpt: A stable neutral iridathiabenzene was synthesized by the treatment of cationic iridathiabenzene with a bulky anionic reagent, sodium tert-butylthiolate. The NMR spectroscopic data and solid state structure of the neutral iridathiabenzene strongly suggested aromaticity in the molecule. In the solution phase, the neutral iridathiabenzene existed as an equilibrating mixture of two square pyramidal isomers. The reactivity of the neutral iridathiabenzene was tested toward a variety of nucleophiles, electrophiles, and coordinating metal fragments. The iridium metal center in the molecule was found to be susceptible to attack by two-electron donors such as acetonitrile and trimethylphosphine ligands, and led to the formation of six-coordinate iridathiacyclohexa-1,3-diene compounds. Reaction with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid led to protonation at the sulfur atom of the thiolate ligand, causing the loss of thiol, and production of a sulfur-bridged dimeric product. The neutral iridathiabenzene also underwent reaction with a cationic coordinating metal fragment to give a sandwich compound in which it coordinated to the new metal fragment in an eta5 fashion. Overall, the reaction chemistry of the neutral iridathiabenzene demonstrated the fragile nature of its metalloaromaticity.
