Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. George P. Thomon, Nobel Laureate in Physics said, "We have labelled civilizations by the main materials which they have used: The Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age ••• a civilization is both developed and limited by the materials at its disposal. Today, man lives on the boundary between the Iron Age and a New Materials Age." The ever more stringent requirements for materials to accomplish specific functions and withstand extreme conditions, as dictated by the needs of industry and defense, con tinue to spur ever more intensive research in Materials Science. According to the recent report "Trends and Opportunities in Materials Research" a vital goal of materials research is to design synthesize and fabricate in high yield, new materials with properties that can be pre dicted, varied and controlled. In the past this has been a fairly empirical process, but as we gain more comprehensive understanding of the behavior of matter on an atomic and molecular scale this goal becomes ever more attain able. An important recent trend is the increasing sophistication and power of theoretical approaches. Aided by the development of computers and versa tile numerical techniques, as well as concepts from statistical mechanics, theorists are beginning to confront the complexity of real materials. Important advances are expected through a concentrated attack on model systems in which the theorist, experimental scientist and engineer all work together towards designing new materials and controlling their properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extremely fine, uniform ceramic powders were synthesized from laser heated gas phase reactions. Resulting Si, Si3N4 and SiC powders have been characterized in terms of parameters which are important for densification processes. They are virtually ideal. The spherical particles typically have mean diameters from 120 to 1000 angstrom. The standard deviation is typically 25-45% and the diameter of the largest observed particle is typically less than twice that of the smallest particle. Purities are extremely high. The laser heated process has been modeled in terms of fluid flow and heat transfer criteria. Many fundamental property measurements were made to provide data for these calculations. The process is extremely efficient; approximately 95% of the SiH4 is reacted in a single pass through the laser beam and approximately 2 kwhr. of energy are required per kilo of Si3N4. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in cooperation with the Office of Sponsored Programs of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army, and the scientific community. This 30th Sagamore Conference, entitled Innovations in Materials Processing, has attempted to focus on the inter disciplinary nature of materials processing, looking at recent advancements in the development of unit processes from a range of standpoints from the understanding and control of the under lying mechanisms through their application as part of a manufactur ing sequence. In between, the classic link between processing and materials properties is firmly established. A broad range of materials are treated in this manner: metals, ceramics, plastics, and composites. The interdisciplinary nature of materials processing exists through its involvement with the basic sciences, with, process and product design, with process control, and ultimately with manufacturing engineering. Materials processing is interdisciplinary in another sense, through its application within all materials disciplines. The industrial community (and the Army as its customer) is becoming increasingly concerned with producibility/reliability/ affordability issues in advanced product development. These concerns will be adequately addressed only by employing the full range of disciplines encompassed within the field of materials processing.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 2nd European Symposium on Engineering Ceramics held in London, 23-24 November 1987. The meeting was attended by almost 200 scientists and engineers, primarily drawn from industry, and the Sessions were chaired by Mr Eric Briscoe, past President of the Institute of Ceramics. Very effective symposium organisation was provided by IBC Technical Services Ltd. The engineering ceramics are a class of materials which has over some 50 years found well-established applications based on the materials' chemical stability and wear resistance. The last 20 years have seen intensified efforts to extend applications for these materials into areas traditionally occupied by metals, but in which the typical metallic weaknesses of wear, and of high temperature creep and oxidation, are now creating significant problems. These efforts have, however, in many cases been undermined on the one hand by the inherent ceramic weaknesses of brittleness and flaw sensitivity, and on the other by an inadequate understanding, and control, of the basic ceramic fabrication processes required for the low-cost mass production of relatively complex components. The positive results of the efforts of the last 20 years have been the development of a large new group of ceramic materials believed to possess intrinsic mechanical property advantages, of which the transformation toughened zirconias, and the ceramic matrix composites are good examples, together with improved powder production methods and powder shaping processes.

It gives a broad overview of the revolutionary new field of nanophase materials; a view which spans the materials, physics, and chemistry research communities at a tutorial level that is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and experts or would-be experts in the science of nanostructured materials. The articles are authored by many of the world's most prominent scientists in this field. The book covers the diverse methods for synthesizing nanophase materials, a variety of subsequent processing methodologies, what is known about the structures of these materials on various length scales from atomic to macroscopic, and the properties of these unique and novel materials. The materials properties covered are mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic and hence span a wide range of important new opportunities for technological applications.

Book excerpt: Ultrafine SiC powders have been prepared by gas phase synthesis from silane and methane in an argon thermal rf-plasma. Bulk properties of the powders were determined by elemental analysis, x-ray diffractin, helium pycnometry, and BET surface area measurements. The near-surface composition and structure of the particles were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition to free silicon and carbon particles in the powders, free carbon and various silicon/carbon/oxygen species were found on the surface of the SiC particles.

Book excerpt: Carbide, Nitride and Boride Materials Synthesis and Processing is a major reference text addressing methods for the synthesis of non-oxides. Each chapter has been written by an expert practising in the subject area, affiliated with industry, academia or government research, thus providing a broad perspective of information for the reader. The subject matter ranges from materials properties and applications to methods of synthesis including pre- and post-synthesis processing. Although most of the text is concerned with the synthesis of powders, chapters are included for other materials such as whiskers, platelets, fibres and coatings. Carbide, Nitride and Boride Materials Synthesis and Processing is a comprehensive overview of the subject and is suitable for practitioners in the industry as well as those looking for an introduction to the field. It will be of interest to chemical, mechanical and ceramic engineers, materials scientists and chemists in both university and industrial environments working on or with refractory carbides, nitrides and borides.
