There are but a handful of compounds that have been discovered to date. This could be largely attributable to the occurrence of fluorine in nature as fluoride (F-). - One might recognize such nomenclature from the ingredients list on a toothpaste tube - In fact, naturally occurring fluoride is most commonly found as fluorite (CaF2) or cryolite (Na3AlF6). As such, the introduction of fluorine via biological pathways has been limited to use of aqueous F- (a very poor nucleophile). This fact - coupled with its naturally low concentration in water - has created the ripe conditions for this shortage. In a way this has proven fertile for synthetic chemists because nature has not yet evolved a method for the deconstruction of partially or fully fluorinated compounds. Considering the above, as synthetic methodologies for the construction of carbon-fluorine bonds became available, so too did the discovery of their valuable properties. So beneficial are these properties that C-F bond-containing compounds have become commonplace in many households throughout the world. For example, practically every home relies on these compounds for use in their refrigerators. Other examples of useful fluorinated materials include blowing agents, non-stick coatings, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, liquid crystals, and lubricants. With all these applications and seemingly easy availability of these compounds, it is interesting to learn that original synthetic methods are still being employed today. As such, the objective of this Thesis is to develop 'greener' routes for the synthesis of fluorocarbons. We hypothesized that by studying transition metal-fluoroalkyl complex-mediated reactions, a more efficient catalytic system could be developed. A foreseen complication arises from the thermodynamic stability of C-F, transition metal-F and transition metal-CRF bonds. Improvements to overcome these caveats include the use of first-row late transition metal complexes. Presented herein are additions to this body of knowledge by expanding on the reactivity of nickel, copper and silver fluoroalkyl complexes. The approach applied in this work, in line with 'green' chemistry principles, was to source readily available fluorinated reagents, i.e. fluoroalkenes and fluoroarenes, to reduce the number of steps for the synthesis of new fluorinated compounds. Chapter 2 builds on the well-established oxidative cyclization of C2 fluoroalkenes to nickel (0), which yields new C4 units. The use of a bulky N-heterocyclic carbene ligand was found to enhance reactivity by reducing the coordination number at nickel. Examples of room temperature C?-F and Ni-CF bond activation and functionalization reactions are presented. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 re-examine the insertion of fluoroalkenes into silver and copper fluorides and hydrides. Building on precedent of addition reactions to hexafluoropropene, this fluoroalkene was examined first. In so doing, a versatile and inexpensive copper heptafluoroisopropyl reagent was developed (Cu-F addition to (CF3)CF=CF2. With easy access to new heptafluoroisopropyl complexes, they were systemically studied for their applications in catalysis. This revealed key features, particularly the lability of the M-hfip bond, which could be detrimental to catalytic reactions. As such, a nickel complex-mediated carbonylative heptafluoroisopropylation reaction and copper complex-mediated nucleophilic addition to electrophiles were developed. When a copper hydride was used instead, the in situ generated fluoroalkyl [Cu-H addition to (CF3)CF=CF2] was susceptible to ?-fluoride elimination. Chapter 4 expands this methodology to achieve the catalytic consecutive hydrodefluorination of fluoroalkenes, demonstrating the scope and limitations of this system. Furthermore, the critical role of the phosphine ligand in accessing an L3Cu-H addition and unusual ?-fluoride elimination mechanism is highlighted. However, tetrafluoroethylene proved resistant to this reaction because the fluoroalkyl resting state of this alkene, Cu-CF2CF2H, is unusually robust. Chapter 5 investigates the utility of this fragment and others in C(sp2)-RF cross-coupling and nucleophilic substitutions. With focus on new routes for late stage fluorination and examples of nickel (0) complex-catalyzed selective C-F bond functionalization reactions, Chapter 5, continues studies for low-temperature and DMAP-assisted conditions for aryl-F cross-coupling reactions with boronic acid esters. Lastly, Chapter 6 reviews the advances presented in this Thesis, provides a link to the expected lasting impacts and attempts to provide guidance to future research on transition-metal complexes in the synthesis of C-F or C-RF containing compounds. Moreover, with the introduction of a new hydrodefluorination technology, previously scarce fluoroalkenes (e.g. 1,2-difluoroethylene) can now be used more freely, potentially leading to the development of new refrigerants or materials applications.

However, the use of hazardous HF, reactive F2 and environmentally persistent long chain fluorosurfactants, all staples of the industrial processes used to prepare refrigerants, pharma-/agrochemicals and fluoropolymers, make the preparation of organofluorine compounds difficult. Therefore, new routes to some or all of these value-added products are desirable. Efficient transition metal-mediated or -catalyzed processes within the arena of fluoro-organic chemistry, however, are significantly less well developed than similar processes for both non-fluorinated and even halogenated compounds. For example, analogs of Group 4 metallocene catalysts for controlled polyolefin formation, or Ru and Group 6 catalysts for alkene metathesis are not generally useful with fluoroalkene substrates. Recent progress has focused on first row metal fluoroalkyl (M-RF) and fluorocarbene (M=CFRF) complexes that tend to have weaker M-C bonds than their second and third row counterparts. The synthesis, electronic structure and chemistry of such complexes is summarized in Chapter 1 along with an assessment of their potential for catalyzed C-C bond formation with fluoroalkenes via insertion or cycloaddition reactions. In Chapter 2 the synthesis and reactivity of new d8 [Co]-CF3 carbonyl complexes and their corresponding electrophilic {[Co]=CF2}+ complexes is described. In Chapter 3 we introduce the first examples of d10 metal fluorocarbenes, P3Ni=CF2 [P = P(OiPr)3; P3 = dppe, P(OiPr)3] along with their facile cycloaddition reactions with tetrafluoroethylene and some reactivity of the resulting stable perfluoronickelacyclobutanes (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphos-phino)ethane). In Chapter 4 exploration of the more reactive Ni fluorocarbenes, Ni=CF(CF3)- [P(OR)3]3, (R = Me, iPr) leads, in reactions with fluoroalkenes, to formation of both metalla-cycles and metathesis products via separate pathways, in the first example of metathesis of fluoro-alkenes with a perfluoro-carbene. Detailed analysis of the latter by Texas A&M collaborators Guan and Hall using density functional theory showed that the nature of the reaction products depends on the geometry of the four-coordinate C-C bond forming transition state. In Chapter 5 this novel fluoroalkene metathesis process is probed further by extending the substrate scope to additional fluoroalkenes and several non-fluorinated variants. In Chapter 6 a series of new Mn-CF3 carbonyl complexes are prepared with a view to enabling fluoroalkene insertion reactions. Although this goal has not yet been achieved, fluoride abstraction using Lewis acids afforded the first examples of [Mn]=CF2 complexes. Finally, in Chapter 7 the findings of this thesis are placed in the context of the current state of the art and logical next steps for further understanding and catalytic process development are proposed.

Although elemental fluorine (F2) is the most reactive element, some fluoro-organic compounds are chemically inert. As such, controlled reactivity of fluorine or highly-fluorinated organic fragments is a considerable, yet important challenge for synthetic chemists. Fluoro-organometallic chemistry has been studied for decades, as researchers attempt to maximize the potential of metal mediated/catalyzed processes for the synthesis of fluorinated organic molecules. Within this framework, metal fluorocarbene complexes are particularly interesting because of their highly tunable reactivity, and are proposed for use in important metathesis/polymerization reactions of perfluorinated alkenes. While considerable work is still needed to make these proposed reactions a reality, this thesis outlines contributions from our research group. We showed that cobalt fluorocarbene complexes CpCo(=CFRF)(PPh2Me) (RF = F, CF3) undergo [2+2] cycloaddition reactions with tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and phenylacetylene to form perfluorometallacyclobutane and partially fluorinated metallacyclobutene products, respectively. For both reactions, computational studies reveal a stepwise ring-closing mechanism, which proceeds through a singlet 1,4-diradical intermediate. Next, the formation of CpCo(=CF2)(L) complexes is achieved via the direct addition of difluorocarbene, generated in situ, to a cobalt(I) precursor. Subsequent addition of CF2 to cobalt fluorocarbene complexes results in [2+1] cycloaddition and formation of perfluorinated alkene complexes. The [2+1] addition is highly favored as the cobalt fluorocarbenes readily react with electrophilic CF2. A series of experiments provide evidence for the stepwise nature of fluoroalkene complex formation. From Co(I) fluorocarbene complexes, the focus shifts to preparing metal fluorocarbenes with electrophilic-type reactivity. The synthesis of bis(perfluoroalkyl) complexes serve as precursors for preparation of perfluoroalkyl cobalt(III) fluorocarbenes, which undergo migratory insertion reactions of the fluorocarbene into the perfluoroalkyl ligand. Using a similar synthetic approach, nickel(II) and palladium(II) difluorocarbene complexes are prepared from their corresponding trifluoromethyl precursors. The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of cobalt(III) fluoride complexes is also described, including the catalytic fluorination of acyl chlorides, demonstrating the first example of a cobalt(III) catalyzed fluorination reaction. The effects of the various ancillary ligands on these cobalt catalysts are investigated using high-throughput experimentation technology, and the scope of the reaction is expanded to include the synthesis of a variety of acyl fluoride compounds. Finally, the results and learnings from this work will be summarized and highlighted. The future directions and novel research which could result from the continuation of these projects is discussed, with an emphasis placed on the areas believed to have the highest potential impact.

This work was the first example of copper in the synthesis of functionalized aryl fluorides, and the first example for the fluorination of unactivated aryl halides. Chapter 7 discusses the extension of the work in Chapter 6 for the fluorination of aryl boron reagents with our newly designed copper reagent. The mechanism of this transformation was investigated, and our data is consistent with the formation of the aryl fluoride from an Ar-Cu(III)-F species. Chapter 8 describes a simple and general method for prepare fluorinated heteroarenes directly through C-H fluorination. The design of such a fluorination reaction was inspired by a classic C-H amination reaction. Chapter 9 extends from the work discussed in Chapter 8 and demonstrates how the C-H fluorination reaction can be used as a versatile reaction for accessing a variety of 2-heteroaryl compounds. The utility of this was demonstrated in several syntheses and late-stage functionalization reactions of important medicinal compounds.

Syntheses and structure analyses of thermodynamically unstable high-oxidation-state fluorides have greatly contributed to inorganic chemistry in this decade. Fluoride catalysts and surface modifications using fluorine are developing a new field of fluorine chemistry and will enable new syntheses of various compounds. The research on inorganic fluorides is now contributing to many chemical energy conversion processes such as lithium batteries. Furthermore, new theoretical approaches to determining the electronic structures of fluorine compounds are also progressing. On the industrial front, the use of inorganic fluorine compounds is constantly increasing, for example, in semi-conductor industry.
