Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of Special Issue articles with a multidisciplinary character, linking biology, medicine, and synthetic organic chemistry. The synthesis and full characterization of about 180 novel organic species, both of natural and synthetic origin, often designed with the support of in-silico studies, are set out in the book. In several articles, molecular hybridization approaches have been used as a successful multi-target strategy for the design and development of novel antitumor agents. Rigorous and careful biochemical studies ranging from in-vitro experiments on a plethora of human-cancer derived cell lines to in-vivo and ex-vivo studies allowed the authors to identify the molecular targets and gain useful information on structure-activity relationships (SAR). For this reason, this collection should interest many readers from different scientific fields.

This book is organized into 13 chapters that explore the synthetic pathways of various organic compounds. The first four chapters describe the variations in the synthesis of superphane, gibberellic acid, prostaglandin, and alkaloids. The following chapters cover the organic synthesis and biosynthesis of tylonolide, endiandric acids A-G, dodecahedrane, fomannosin, and illudol. A chapter focuses on the evolution of the total synthesis of jatrophone, an architecturally interesting macrocyclic diterpene extracted from Jatropha gossypiifolia. Another chapter discusses the heuristic principle for the stereorationale design of alkaloid syntheses. The remaining chapters discuss the approach to the total synthesis of steroids, streptonigrin, methynolide, and Prelog-Djerassi lactonic acid. Organic chemists, teachers, and students will find this book of great value.

Book excerpt: A topic for a Solvay Conference should be general enough to conform with the great tradition of previous conferences. On the other hand it should not be so broad that it can not be covered during the limited time of the conference. After discussion of several such topics, "Design and Synthesis of Organic Molecules Based on Molecular Recognition" was chosen. According to Albert Einstein we live in an era of perfect methods and confused aims. For example in organic chemistry the known synthetic methods allow us to prepare an astronomical number of compounds; the gap between the possible and the relevant becomes larger every day. After discovery and classification of the main types of reactions, the study of the selectivity of reactions becomes of paramount importance. One can learn quite a lot from Nature, which uses molecular recognition to achieve selec tivity in a degree so far unattainable by mere mortals. To analyze the structural features applied by Nature, to accomplish high molecular recog nition, and to simulate these features by synthesis have recently become therefore favorite occupations of chemists. The purpose of this conference was to bring together two groups, the analysts and the syntheticists, to discuss the present status of the knowledge. This monograph contains the chairman's introduction in which he has summarized the main points at issue and the contributions of the renowned scientists who participated. The organizers hope that it will stimulate further research in this fascinating field.

The experimental descriptions are very helpful for guiding less experienced students towards a better understanding of practical aspects in synthetic organic chemistry, while the broad scope of the questions and answers is excellent for learning purposes. The exercises are based on published research articles, adapted for didactic purposes, and will thus inspire students by way of having to solve real-life problems in chemistry. A must-have for MSc and PhD students as well as postdocs in organic chemistry and related disciplines, and lecturers and organizers of lab courses in organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: A classic in the area of organic synthesis, Strategies and Tactics in Organic Synthesis provides a forum for investigators to discuss their approach to the science and art of organic synthesis. Rather than a simple presentation of data or a second-hand analysis, we are given stories that vividly demonstrate the power of the human endeavour known as organic synthesis and the creativity and tenacity of its practitioners. First hand accounts of each project tell of the excitement of conception, the frustration of failure and the joy experienced when either rational thought and/or good fortune give rise to successful completion of a project. In this book we learn how synthesis is really done and are educated, challenged and inspired by these stories, which portray the idea that triumphs do not come without challenges. We also learn that we can meet challenges to further advance the science and art of organic synthesis, driving it forward to meet the demands of society, in discovering new reactions, creating new designs and building molecules with atom and step economies that provide solutions through function to create a better world. - Personal accounts of research in organic chemistry. - Written by internationally renowned scientists. - Details state of the art organic synthesis.
