Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of high energy density materials continues to receive a great deal of attention. This is due to the need to package more energy into a smaller volume. Highly symmetric compounds have high densities and the strain energy of highly strained compounds serves to increase their heat of formation and therefore lead to improved performance as propellants, explosives and fuels. This is not a new idea. Indeed, there is presently a large effort directed towards the preparation of energetic cubane derivatives. However, the synthesis of cubane derivatives has been a tremendous synthetic challenge and major breakthroughs in their preparation have been slow in coming. On the other hand, we have chosen to study less involved but still highly strained structures, namely cyclopropyl compounds. One class of such energetic compounds, the nitrocyclopropanes, has received minimal work. Over the past three years, we have developed efficient methodology for the formation and reactions of such systems based on nitrocarbene chemistry. This progress report details the preparation and reactions of some of these nitro compounds. A second area of research covered during the grant period was a computational study of a novel, high energy density compound diazirinone. In addition, our experimental attempts to prepare this compound are also included. (JES).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the design, synthesis, performance and practical application of energetic materials. The book consists of thirteen chapters demonstrating the design routes of nitrogen-rich polycyclic-based energetic materials that are bicyclic, tricyclic and tetracyclic-based. It presents the synthesis of the energetic backbone, the construction of linkage and the introduction of energetic units, which could have a positive impact on the chemistry of not only on high-energy-density materials but also in other fields. The book also provides detailed analysis of the experimental methods discussed. Work in this area will benefit from the combine expertise from organic, inorganic and physical chemistry as well as other connected disciplines. As such this book has wide appeal and will help in increasing fundamental knowledge of nitrogen-rich heterocycles to eventually allow for this knowledge to be transferred into industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anion recognition plays a critical role in a range of biological processes, and a variety of receptors and carriers can be found throughout the natural world. Chemists working in the area of supramolecular chemistry have created a range of anion receptors, drawing inspiration from nature as well as their own inventive processes. This book traces the origins of anion recognition chemistry as a unique sub-field in supramolecular chemistry while illustrating the basic approaches currently being used to effect receptor design. The combination of biological overview and summary of current synthetic approaches provides a coverage that is both comprehensive and comprehensible. First, the authors detail the key design motifs that have been used to generate synthetic receptors and which are likely to provide the basis for further developments. They also highlight briefly some of the features that are present in naturally occurring anion recognition and transport systems and summarise the applications of anion recognition chemistry. Providing as it does a detailed review for practitioners in the field and a concise introduction to the topic for newcomers, Anion Receptor Chemistry reflects the current state of the art. Fully referenced and illustrated in colour, it is a welcome addition to the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the most innovative results in carbene chemistry, setting the foundation for new discoveries and applications The discovery of stable carbenes has reinvigorated carbene chemistry research, with investigators seeking to develop carbenes into new useful catalysts and ligands. Presenting the most innovative and promising areas of carbene research over the past decade, this book explores newly discovered structural, catalytic, and organometallic aspects of carbene chemistry, with an emphasis on new and emerging synthetic applications. Contemporary Carbene Chemistry features contributions from an international team of pioneering carbene chemistry researchers. Collectively, these authors have highlighted the most interesting and promising areas of investigation in the field. The book is divided into two parts: Part 1, Properties and Reactions of Carbenes, explores new findings on carbene stability, acid-base behavior, and catalysis. Carbenic structure and reactivity are examined in chapters dedicated to stable carbenes, carbodicarbenes, carbenes as guests in supramolecular hosts, tunneling in carbene and oxacarbene reactions, and ultrafast kinetics of carbenes and their excited state precursors. Theoretical concerns are addressed in chapters on computational methods and dynamics applied to carbene reactions. Part 2, Metal Carbenes, is dedicated to the synthetic dimensions of carbenes, particularly the reactions and catalytic properties of metal carbenes. The authors discuss lithium, rhodium, ruthenium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, and gold. All the chapters conclude with a summary of the current situation, new challenges on the horizon, and promising new research directions. A list of key reviews and suggestions for further reading also accompanies every chapter. Each volume of the Wiley Series on Reactive Intermediates in Chemistry and Biology focuses on a specific reactive intermediate, offering a broad range of perspectives from leading experts that sets the stage for new applications and further discoveries.
