Book excerpt: Brings together the best tested and proven stereoselective synthetic methods Both the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are increasingly dependent on stereoselective synthetic methods and strategies for the generation of new chiral drugs and natural products that offer specific 3-D structures. With the publication of Stereoselective Synthesis of Drugs and Natural Products, researchers can turn to this comprehensive two-volume work to guide them through all the core methods for the synthesis of chiral drugs and natural products. Stereoselective Synthesis of Drugs and Natural Products features contributions from an international team of synthetic chemists and pharmaceutical and natural product researchers. These authors have reviewed the tremendous body of literature in the field in order to compile a set of reliable, tested, and proven methods alongside step-by-step guidance. This practical resource not only explores synthetic methodology, but also reaction mechanisms and applications in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. The publication begins with an introductory chapter covering general principles and methodologies, nomenclature, and strategies of stereoselective synthesis. Next, it is divided into three parts: Part One: General Methods and Strategies Part Two: Stereoselective Synthesis by Bond Formation including C-C bond formation C-H bond formation C-O bond formation C-N bond formation Other C-heteroatom formation and other bond formation Part Three: Methods of Analysis and Chiral Separation References in every chapter serve as a gateway to the literature in the field. With this publication as their guide, chemists involved in the stereoselective synthesis of drugs and natural products now have a single, expertly edited source for all the methods they need.

Book excerpt: Frontiers in Physicochemical Biology documents the proceedings of an international symposium held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique, (Fondation Edmond de Rothschild) in Paris, May 23-27, 1977. The symposium was organized to cover the main topics of modern day molecular biology and biophysics, which are also the major disciplines researched at the Institute. The contributions made by researchers at the symposium are organized into four parts. Part I contains papers on the physical chemistry of fundamental biomolecules. Part II presents studies on physicochemical aspects of the mechanisms of genetic expression. Part III examines the biochemistry of oxygen and hemoglobin. Part IV deals with the study of organized systems.

Book excerpt: The Leukotrienes, Chemistry and Biology discusses the significant scientific progress of leukotrienes, from the discovery of slow-reacting substance to the chemical identification of a mixture of leukotrienes. Composed of 11 chapters, the book presents an enormous increase in research on the chemistry and biology of these and related substances, especially as they relate to the etiology of allergic and inflammatory diseases. After briefly discussing the continuing perspectives on the leukotriene biology, the book describes the structure, synthesis, formation, and biological actions of leukotrienes. This is followed by a discussion on arachidonic metabolism for the development of therapeutic agents specifically designed to either inhibit the synthesis or antagonize the effects of the leukotrienes. The book also looks into the biochemical and pharmacologic control of the synthesis and actions of leukotrienes. The information is considered in the context of the specific enzymes in the pathway that may be affected by any given agent. The in vivo studies on the pulmonary mechanical effect of leukotrienes, the pharmacologic activity of leukotriene receptors, and the antagonistic property of peptidoleukotrienes as an approach to allergic disease treatment are considered in the concluding chapters of the book. This book will be of value to scientists and researchers interested in hypersensitivity reactions, inflammation, and allergic diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last fifteen years organoselenium chemistry underwent a spectacular mutation: from an exotic area of science practised by a few specialists it became a relatively well mastered and widely used methodology of synthetic organic chemistry. The key to this success is that a fair number of selenium based reagents and reactions have been discovered, which are able to perform specific transformations selectively and often under very mild conditions. The aim of this volume is to present the different selenium containing reagents now available to chemists, to mention the scope as well as the limitations of their reactions, and to compare those which possess similar reactivities. The authors present the reagents in the order of increasing oxidation level around the selenium atom.

Guillemin and Schally iJ) 1971 for isolation and chemical characterization of gonadotropin releasing hormone, we have experienced a remarkable period of growth of interest in this hormone. The last 20 years have been characterized by a swift translation of basic science discovery into clinical utility. Approval of GnRH and its analogs for treatment of prostate cancer, endometriosis, of ovulation indicate the range and precocious puberty and for induction of these agents. of usefulness In order to bring together the leaders in the basic and clinical science of GnRH, a conference was organized on "Modes of Action of GnRH and GnRH Analogs" and held in Scottsdale, Arizona, February 26 to March 2, 1991. The presentations, given as chapters in this volume, show both the advances in the body of information in this discipline and the efforts underway to reduce basic science to clinical practice. The audience was a combination of representatives from universities, government, industry, and physicians in practice. The lively discussions and insightful questions indicated the interest in the topics discussed and frequently served to catalyze planned interactions of the meeting participants. The organizers are grateful to the speakers and poster presenters for their contributions and for the timely preparations of the manuscripts included in the present volume. We are also thankful to the staff of Serono Symposia, USA, for the organizational skills and support that allowed the meeting organizers to focus on the science and medicine presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarcoplasmic reticulum is a form of endoplasmic reticulum found in large quantities in mature muscle cells. Anthony Martonosi presents general information about the development and function of the sarcoplasmic reticulum within a framework of contemporary research on the molecular biology of biosynthetic and signaling processes. Focusing on the development of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, Martonosi demonstrates the regulatory functions that control the production of its molecular components and investigates the interaction of these lipid and protein molecules with the myogenic, neurogenic and hormonal stimuli present in developing muscle cells. Martonosi provides extensive experimental support throughout the book.
