Book excerpt: In this work synthesis and properties of novel Pi-conjugated polymers containing diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and benzodifuranone (BZDF) chromophores in the main chain, which are suitable as active materials in optoelectronic applications, are developed and investigated. The polymers were synthesized via metal-mediated or -catalyzed Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira and Yamamoto cross-coupling polycondensation reactions or by using oxidative and anodic electropolymerization. The resulting polymers were characterized using gel permeation chromatography, NMR-, UV/vis-, and fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and cyclic voltrammetry. The polymers exhibit low HOMO-LUMO band gaps and reversible oxidation and reduction processes, which suggests a strong donor-acceptor character. Electrochromic properties were found upon oxidation and reduction. Additionally, a series of cross-linked conjugated microporous polymers was synthesized. They exhibit high surface area and micropores in nanometer range. Furthermore, the influence via variation of electron donor and acceptor on the HOMO-LUMO band gaps of the conjugated polymers was studied.

Book excerpt: The synthesis of well-defined and functionalized conjugated polymers, which are essential in the development of efficient organic electronics, through Suzuki cross-coupling polymerizations has been a challenging task. We developed controlled Pd(0)/t-Bu3P-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling polymerizations of AB-type monomers via the chain-growth mechanism with a series of in situ generated ArPd(t-Bu3P)X (X = I, Br, Cl) complexes as initiators. Among them, the combinations of Pd2(dba)3/t-Bu3P/p-BrC6H4I, Pd2(dba)3/t-Bu3P/p-BrC6H4CH2OH and Pd2(dba)3/t-Bu3P/p-PhCOC6H4Br were identified as highly robust initiator systems, resulting in polymers with predictable molecular weight and narrow polydispersity (PDI~1.13-1.20). In addition, Pd2(dba)3/t-Bu3P/p-BrC6H4CH2OH and Pd2(dba)3/t-Bu3P/p-PhCOC6H4Br initiator systems afforded functional polymers with>95% fidelity. Our results paved the road to access well-defined conjugated polymers, including conjugated polymers with complex polymer architectures such as block copolymers and branch copolymers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This digital primer serves as an excellent introduction to conjugated polymers, particularly in terms of their synthesis and design. Chapters one and two introduce common terminology and fundamental concepts. Chapter three covers known structure–function relationships that can be used to design conjugated polymers with the desired properties for specific applications, concluding with a discussion of the additive and sometimes conflicting aspects of these design elements. Chapters four, five, and six cover the various methods used to synthesize these materials, beginning with the oldest and most simple approaches, and increasing in synthetic complexity. Advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty wishing to enter this field for the first time should find this primer beneficial. At the same time, however, we have pointed out various misconceptions still commonly found in the literature, which should be valuable to those already familiar with these materials.

Book excerpt: Conjugated alternating copolymers containing cross-linkable 9,10-bis(hexyloxy)anthracene moieties were synthesized via Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization. Uncross-linked polymers fluoresced due to conjugation in the backbone from 9,10-dihexocyanthracene and comonomers of thiophene or fluorene. The anthracene-based homopolymers had a UV-vis absorbance at 320 nm and emission at 500 nm. Copolymers with thiphene shifted the absorbance to 255 nm, and the anthracene-fluorene copolymers had an absorbance of 360 nm. Upon irradiation, cross-linking in solution and in solid films was achieved through the [4+4] cycloaddition between anthracene units resulting in a loss of fluorescence for all samples due to the deconjugation of the backbone during cross-linking.An investigation regarding the effect of water upon the MW of polyfuluorenes synthesized via Suzuki polycondensation was initiated. Polymers of high MW and low polydispersity were synthesized without the addition of water. Molecular weights in the range of 100,000 g/mol were easily obtained, and we postulate that the reason for this achievement is that removing the bulk aqueous phase from the reaction mixture leads to greater Mn polymers because CPs are inherently insoluble in water and the addition of water to the reaction mixtures in standard conditions could be a factor limiting their ability to achieve higher molecular weights.

Abstract: A series of copolymers based on poly(phenylene thienylene) mainchain that contains pendent bisterpyridine ruthenium(II) complexes was synthesized by palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The polymers contain different proportion of metal complexes. The copolymers exhibit broad absorption band in the visible region due to the conjugated backbone and the bisterpyridine ruthenium complexes. The relative intensity of each absorption band depends on the metal complex contents. There is a significant spectral overlap between the emission of the conjugated polymer mainchain and the absorption of the ruthenium complexes. It was found that there is a quenching of polymer emission by the complexes. Based on the results obtained by spectroscopic studies, it is proposed to be Forster type energy transfer process between the polymer mainchain as the donor and the complexes as the acceptors. Two donor-acceptor molecules with pyrazinopyrazine bridge units were synthesized. They exhibit intramolecular charge transfer character and were characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, UV-visible absorption and mass spectrometry. The two compounds have absorption band in the near IR region and exhibit narrow band gap. Through structural modification, their optical and electronic properties can be fine tuned. They have potential applications in organic photovoltaic cells and organic field effect transistors. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5351043 Subjects: Conjugated polymers

Book excerpt: “Applied Cross-Coupling Reactions” provides students and teachers of advanced organic chemistry with an overview of the history, mechanisms and applications of cross-coupling reactions. Since the discovery of the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions in 1972, numerous synthetic uses and industrial applications have been developed. The mechanistic studies of the cross-coupling reactions have disclosed that three fundamental reactions: oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination, are involved in a catalytic cycle. Cross-coupling reactions have allowed us to produce a variety of compounds for industrial purposes, such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, liquid crystals and conjugate polymers for use in electronic devices. Indeed, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2010 was awarded for work on cross-coupling reactions. In this book, the recent trends in cross-coupling reactions are also introduced from the point of view of synthesis design and catalytic activities of transition-metal catalysts.

Book excerpt: Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers, as one type of organic semiconducting materials, have drawn lots of attention for the application in organic electronics due to their lowered band gaps and high charge mobility. The polymerization based on cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) is an atom-economic synthetic method for D-A polymers as it significantly simplifies the overall synthetic routes by applying C-H bond activation during the polymerization. Two different dual catalytic systems – Au/Ag and Pd/Ag for CDC polymerizations were investigated here. Despite both transformations occurring by a similar mechanistic sequence, dramatically different kinetic behaviors and polymerization results were discovered. The Pd/Ag system produced unexpectedly low homocoupling defects and high molecular weight polymers despite the small molecule coupling reaction proceeding inefficiently. Conversely, Au/Ag system produced low molecular weight polymers with lots of homocoupling defects while catalyzing an efficient small molecule coupling reaction. While the findings in this work provide valuable insight for future studies in obtaining high-molecular weight D-A polymers via CDC, these findings could affect the design of substrates in late-stage C−H functionalization.
