Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-healing is a well-known phenomenon in nature: a broken bone merges after some time and if skin is damaged, the wound will stop bleeding and heals again. This concept can be mimicked in order to create polymeric materials with the ability to regenerate after they have suffered degradation or wear. Already realized applications are used in aerospace engineering, and current research in this fascinating field shows how different self-healing mechanisms proven successful by nature can be adapted to produce even more versatile materials. The book combines the knowledge of an international panel of experts in the field and provides the reader with chemical and physical concepts for self-healing polymers, including aspects of biomimetic processes of healing in nature. It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic Polymers focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and potential applications of organometallic polymers. The discussion is organized around seven themes: vinyl polymerization of organometallic monomers; condensation polymerization of organometallic monomers; polymer-bound catalysts; applications of organotin polymers; developments in organosilicon polymers; phosphonitrile and sulfur nitride polymers; and coordination polymers. This book is comprised of 33 chapters and begins with a general review of polymerized vinyl monomers containing transition metals, as well as the reactivity of such monomers in addition to homo- and copolymerizations. The following chapters explore the participation of the ferrocene nucleus in the polymerization of vinylferrocene and its effect on polymer properties; thermomechanical transitions of ferrocene-containing polymers; photocrosslinkable organometallic polyesters; and supported catalysts for ethylene polymerization. The remaining sections discuss antifouling applications of various tin-containing organometallic polymers; structure and applications of polyphosphazenes and polymeric sulfur nitride; and coordination of inorganic ions to polymers. This monograph will be a useful resource for organic chemists and research workers in the field.

Book excerpt: This book overviews methods for the synthesis of metal-containing monomers with various types of metal bonds to the organic moiety of the molecule, such as ionic, covalent, donor-acceptor, and others. Published data on homopolymerization, copolymerization, and graft polymerization of these monomers are generalized. Synthesis and Polymerization of Metal-Containing Monomers discusses features typical of the molecular and structural organization of the resulting metal-containing polymers, their properties and the associated major applications, such as catalytical and biological activity, electrophysical characteristics, and thermal resistance.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively reviews the synthesis, characterization and application aspects of linear and crosslinked synthetic polyampholytes - simple model of biopolymers - starting from the 1950's. The synthetic strategy of "annealed", "quenched" and "zwitterionic" polyampholytes, the properties of polyampholytes in solutions and in gel state are considered. The complexation ability of polyampholytes with respect to transition metal ions, ionic surfactants, dyes and organic probes polyelectrolytes, proteins and colloid particles is discussed. Stimuli-sensitive behavior of various amphoteric gel and membrane systems demonstrating rhythmically phenomenon similar to that of heart beat, deformation, oscillation or self-oscillation phenomena stimulated by temperature, pH and electric field are illustrated. Catalytic properties of synthetic polyampholytes simulating the function of enzymes are also considered.

Book excerpt: A series of bifunctional monomers based on N,N-diallylbenzenesulfonamides with varying groups on the benzene moiety were investigated. The main goal of this project was to polymerize these monomers using radical and acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization methods to polymerize through the allyl groups, and nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) to polymerize through the fluorine groups on the phenyl ring. Using phenyl substituted benzenesulfonyl chloride derivatives as a starting material, a series of N,N-diallylbenzenesulfonamide derivatives were prepared. The ADMET and radical cyclopolymerizations were monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy, observing the disappearance of signals for the allyl groups in both, and the appearance of broad aliphatic signals in the radical cyclopolymers. The polymers formed via SNAr reactions were followed by DEPT 90 13C NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, GPC, DSC, and TGA were used to characterize the polymers, which indicated successful ADMET, cyclopolymerization, and SNAr reactions.
