Book excerpt: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have played a dominant role in organometallic chemistry for decades and revolutionized the field of homogenous catalysis. NHCs have been thoroughly studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and have shown unique reactivity towards transition metals, chalcogens, azides and pnictogens. This thesis is aimed at utilizing the unique reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbenes to develop novel, robust catalysts to mediate organic transformations. The multi-faceted work within this thesis explores the use of NHCs as ancillary ligands on early and late transition metals as potential catalysts for olefin polymerization and ring-closing metathesis, respectively. This work also includes exploring the synthesis and coordination of ancillary ligands derived from the unique reactivity of NHCs towards azides, chalcogens and pnictinidenes. The reactivity of a novel aryl-substituted acyclic imino-N-heterocyclic carbene to early transition metals, cyclooctasulfur and Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes was explored. The reactivity of imidazol-2-imide towards Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes and the synthesis and coordination of a novel group of ligands bearing an imidazol-2-imine scaffold were also explored. Lastly, this work will include the reactivity of IMes=PPh to Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct Synthesis of Metal Complexes provides in-depth coverage of the direct synthesis of coordination and organometallic compounds. The work is primarily organized by methods, but also covers highly relevant complexes, such as metal-polymer coordination compounds. This updated reference discusses recent developments in cryosynthesis, electrosynthesis, and tribosynthesis (popular as it doesn’t require organic solvents), with special attention paid to ‘greener’ methodologies and approaches. Additionally, the book describes physical methods of zero-valent metal interaction with organic matter, including sputtering, ultrasonic treatment and synthesis in ionic liquids. The book presents completely new content as a follow-up to the 1999 Elsevier Science publication Direct Synthesis of Coordination and Organometallic Compounds that was edited by Dr. Garnovskii and Dr. Kharisov. Covers current methods and techniques of metal interactions with organic media leading to metal chelates, adducts, di- and polymetallic complexes, metal-containing macrocycles, supported coordination compounds (i.e., metal complexes on carbon nanotubes), and more Describes reactivities of distinct forms of elemental metals (powders, sheets, nanoparticles (including a host of less-common metal nanostructures) with organic phase (liquid, solid and gaseous) and water Includes experimental procedures, with examples of direct synthesis, at the end of each chapter

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study involves synthetic approaches towards the preparation of novel NHC complexes of low valent rhenium and manganese transition metals. Diverse methods of synthesis were studied. The direct approach, in which the ylidene obtained from deprotonation of 1,3-bis(2,4,6- trimethylphenyl)imidazolium chloride was added to the metal substrate, proved to be unsuccessful as isolation of the free carbene should rather be performed in an argon filled glove box under extreme inert conditions. By way of further investigation the ylidene was prepared by in situ methods and then quenched with the metal substrate. Different bases for deprotonation purposes and reaction conditions were explored. All routes employed were investigated and compared using group VII transition metal substrates Re(CO)5Br, Mn(CO)5Br, Re2(CO)10 and Mn2(CO)10. Isolation and purification of these products proved to be very challenging due to the insolubility in some organic solvents with consequent problematic spectroscopic analyses of the complexes. The tendency of the products to undergo various side reactions is observed in all reactions. Specifically, hydrolysis of the imidazolium ligand, followed by vinyl formation, yielded the mesitylformamide compound (3). The results obtained for some of the monometal substrates indicated that the target complexes were formed but could not be isolated. However, the synthesis route employing deprotonation by nBuLi as base and [Mn2(CO)10] as dimetal substrate lead to the isolation of the target dinuclear complex [Mn2(CO)9IMes] (9). Other novel complexes obtained during the course of this study include the biscarbene tetrarhenium complex [Re2(CO)9.C(OEt)C4H2OC(OEt)Re2(CO)9] (12) and various side reaction products. In many cases, metal-metal bond cleavage and carbonyl insertion was observed, as is evident in the complex IMesH[ReO4] (6) and ketene product (13). Structural and theoretical studies were performed to investigate the bond character between the carbene ligand and the metal.

Book excerpt: The first stable "free" N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) was isolated in 1991, since then many classes of NHCs were synthesized and isolated. N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have become a common ligand in the synthesis of metal complexes, due to their strong [Sigma]-donation with poor [pi]-acceptor ability. Among all the NHC metal complexes, Hollis group was interested in exploring CCC-NHC pincer complexes. In 2005, Hollis and co-workers synthesized and isolated first achiral CCC-NHC zirconium pincer amido complex and studied its catalytic ability to perform intramolecular hydroamination of aminoalkenes. Later, Hollis group designed and developed new NHCs with a saturated chiral backbone, and used these new ligands to generate a new series of metal complexes. This dissertation is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of several chiral bi-dentate NHC ligands with varying substituents on the backbone. These NHC ligands were used to synthesize several chiral mono, bis and tris amido CCC-NHC zirconium pincer complexes. Further, transmetallation to cobalt complexes were achieved. Intramolecular hydroamination was measured for several chiral bis and tris amido CCC-NHC pincer zirconium catalysts. Variants of these catalytic systems were generated with differing steric hinderance and electronic structure. The enantioselectivity of these novel new molecules were studied.

Book excerpt: Advances in Transition-Metal Mediated Heterocyclic Synthesis provides an overview of recent catalytic reactions involving transition metals to produce heterocyclic compounds. The book is organized according to the type of transformation used to achieve the synthesis of the heterocyclic systems (mainly aza- and oxa-heterocycles). As such, it covers recent applications on the synthesis of heterocycles, also describing the details of the novel transformations in a didactic manner to motivate readers in search of new catalytic processes. The editors have included state-of-the-art strategies, including transition-metal reactions involving unsaturated systems (reactions of allenes, new gold(I)-catalyzed reactions, and Prins reaction). Chapters highlight the versatility of organopalladium chemistry dealing with carbonylative transformations, C-H activation reactions, coupling processes, and the control of the ambiphilic character of organopalladium species. Finally, the book discusses new reactions leading to heterocycles based on C-H activation processes catalyzed by other metals (Rh, Ru, Co). Written by an outstanding team of authors who are leading experts in organometallic chemistry and organic synthesis, this book is a valuable resource not only for chemists mainly focused on synthesis, but also for those interested in reaction mechanisms involving transition metals. Helpfully organized by transformation type to stimulate the search for new synthetic processes Completely illustrated and written by global experts Includes thoughtfully selected strategies chosen by the editors to exemplify the state-of-the-art of the subject, including transition-metal reactions involving unsaturated systems, organopalladium chemistry, and metal-catalyzed C-H activation

This book was released on 2012 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as ligands in catalysis is one of the most significant developments in modern catalysis and organometallic chemistry. One way to extend the scope of NHC ligand tuning is by means of annulation of carbocyclic and heterocyclic rings to the NHC backbone. The bis(imino)acenaphthene-supported N-heterocyclic carbene [IPr(BIAN)] has been synthesized and can be regarded as originating from the fusion of a naphthalene ring to an NHC. Several metal complexes of IPr(BIAN), including those incorporating copper(I), silver(I), gold(I), or iridium(I) have been synthesized and characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The doncity of IPr(BIAN) was investigated using the Tolmen Electronic Parameter (TEP) method. A TEP value of 2042 cm−1 was calculated for the IPr(BIAN) ligand using the Ir(CO)2Cl complex which indicates that IPr(BIAN) is a relatively strong electron donating NHC ligand. The well-behaved redox chemistry of the BIAN ligand class rendered IPr(BIAN) an excellent candidate for exploration of the relationship between ligand charge and carbene donicity. The electrochemical reduction of IPr(BIAN) was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a THF solution and a reversible reduction wave was detected at - 1.79 V vs SCE. Spectroelectrochemical IR studies were also undertaken to further characterize the nature of the reduced state. IPr(BIAN) was found to be a stronger electron donating ligand in the reduced state in comparison with the neutral state of the ligand. IPr(BIAN) was also chemically reduced using potassium graphite and the resulting radical anion was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. An isotropic EPR signal was observed at a g value of 2.0112. Due to the known antimicrobial activities of silver and gold NHCs, the activities of the silver and gold complexes of IPr(BIAN) and the imidazolium salts of several BIAN ligands were investigated using the minimum inhibitory concentration test. The silver(I) and gold(I) complexes of IPr(BIAN) were found to be moderately active. The most active compounds were found to be the imidazolium salts, with MIC values ranging between
