In recent times, the effectiveness of antibacterial measures has come under scrutiny due to the resistance demonstrated by microorganisms against multiple antibacterial agents. The emergence of infectious diseases caused by various bacterial strains presents a serious risk to human health. Antibiotics have been widely utilized over the years to combat infections in both community and hospital settings (Marta et al., 2015). Unfortunately, many pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance to commonly used antibiotics. During the late 19th century, infectious diseases were a major cause of mortality until the discovery of antibiotics. The commercial production of the first antibiotic, Penicillin, began around 1940 (Huh et al., 2011). The late Victorian period witnessed several breakthroughs in understanding microbial antagonism, which refers to the ability of one microorganism to kill or inhibit the growth of another microorganism (Wainwright, 2008). The most renowned observation came in 1928 when Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin, an antibiotic produced by Penicillium mold that was effective against Staphylococcus aureus. However, the widespread use of antibiotics as a common treatment for infectious diseases eventually led to the serious problem of antibiotic resistance. For instance, the extensive use of methicillin has resulted in the development of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which remains a major concern in hospitals (Guillemot, 1999). The use of third-generation antibiotics like Vancomycin and Cephalosporin has also given rise to new strains of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. It has been observed that measures such as optimizing antibiotic use may not reduce the cases of antibiotic resistance in the future. Microbes are less likely to develop resistance against nanoparticles because they target a wide range of cellular components, requiring the microorganisms to simultaneously undergo multiple mutations for self-protection (Pal et al., 2007). Consequently, scientists have shifted their focus towards the development of antimicrobial agents that microorganisms are less likely to resist, leading to the emergence of metal oxide nanoparticles. The term "Nanotechnology" was first introduced by "Norio Taniguchi" in 1974. The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) defines Nanotechnology as the utilization of nano-sized materials with at least one dimension in the nanometer range to construct devices and materials with significantly enhanced properties . Scientists associated with the NNI have devised novel methods for constructing structural materials that can be used to create smaller and stronger products and devices. Nanotechnology involves manufacturing at the nanometer scale, which is extremely small and operates at the molecular level to create structures and properties (Ashok Kumar et al., 2009). It has become a high priority in many countries and can be employed to modify materials at the nanoscale. Reducing particle size can alter the physical and structural properties of nanomaterials. Nanostructures have been developed to enhance various physical properties, such as antimicrobial properties, water repellence, soil resistance, and antistatic properties.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research consists of two major sections. The first section of this research is focused on developing novel synthesis methods, characterization, and catalytic applications of multi-functional transition metal oxides including manganese oxide nano-materials (2x2 tunel structured manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve), 3D hierarchical nano-architecture -MnO2 and cobalt oxides, and cobalt based materials. Manganese oxide octahedral molecula sieves (OMS) have ID open framework structures with various theoretical nano-scale tunnel size materials have been investigated extensively as low cost and environmentally benign ionic and molecular sieves and efficient redox catalysts. A novel and efficient solvent-free method has been developed to synthesize manganese oxides with 2 x 2 tunnel structures. The properties of the synthesized OMS-2 materilas have been compared with that synthesized by conventional reflux and hydrothermal methods. Epsilon manganese dioxides with controlled novel 3D architectures have been fabricated via a hydrothermal chemical reaction. The effects of reaction time and reaction temperature on the morphology of the final -MnO2 are investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the hierarchical nano-architectures are proposed. The magnetic properties of -MnO2 are also studied. Resides manganese oxides, a microwave-heating reflux route has been used to synthesize 3D flower like cobalt hydrotalcite-like compounds with layered structure and these compounds can be transferred into spinel structure of Co3O 4. Both materials show the electrocatalytic activity and stability for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. Therefore these materials have the potential to be electrocatyltic catalysts. The second section of the research is to study the microstructure of carbon films coated on the iron and graphite particles by a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method and the relationship between the microstructure of the carbon coatings and their effects on electrochemical properties.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The d-block elements are very important in magnetics, electronics, catalysis, and biological systems. The synthesis and characterization of nearly monodisperse d-block element based nanocrystals with a precise control over the size, composition, and shape are important to utilize the nanocrystals in such applications. The goals of my thesis are to synthesize d-block transition metal based nanocrystals and understand their magnetic and catalytic properties. I present the size- and composition-dependent AC magnetic permeability of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals for radio frequency applications. The nanocrystals are synthesized through high-temperature solvothermal decomposition, and their stoichiometry is determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Size-dependent magnetic permeability is observed in maghemite nanocrystals, while as-synthesized, magnetite-rich, iron oxide nanocrystals do not show size dependence due to the inhomogeneous crystal structure of the as-synthesized nanocrystals. The saturation magnetization of iron oxide nanocrystals is increased by doping of non-magnetic Zn2+ into A site of ferrite, resulting the enhancement of the real part of the magnetic permeability of Zn0.25Fe2.75O4 nanocrystals by twofold compared to that of similarly sized ferrite nanocrystals. The integration of 12.3 nm Zn0.25Fe2.75O4 nanocrystals into a microfabricated toroidal inductor and a solenoid inductor yield higher quality factors than air core inductors with the same geometries. The ligand exchange with dendrimers reduces the blocking temperature of Mn0.08Zn0.33Fe2.59O4 nanocrystal, indicating the decrease of dipolar coupling between nanocrystals. The study on MnxFe3-xO4 and CoxFe3-xO4 nanocrystals shows a clear difference in DC and AC magnetic behaviors of soft and hard magnetic nanocrystals. The inductor with zinc ferrite nanocrystal core is embedded into a power converter and its temperature dependent energy efficiency is measured. The energy efficiency of a power converter with the nanocrystal core inductor rises as the temperature increases while that of the power converters with an air core inductor or commercial core inductor decreases. Finally, I describe the hydrodeoxygenation reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-dimethylfuran by metallic nanocrystals such as Pt, PtMn, PtFe, PtCo, and PtNi. Both conversion ratio and selectivity for 2,5-dimethylfuran show clear composition dependent catalytic properties and, in particular, 3.7 nm Pt3Co2 nanocrystals achieve 98 % of selectivity for 2,5-dimethylfuran.
