Book Synopsis Neutral and Cationic Vanadium Bisimido Complexes by : Henry Storms La Pierre
Download or read book Neutral and Cationic Vanadium Bisimido Complexes written by Henry Storms La Pierre and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1: The syntheses of neutral (halide and aryl) and cationic vanadium bisimides are described. Characterization of the complexes by X-ray diffraction, 13C NMR, 51V NMR, and V L2,3-edge NEXFAS provide a description of the electronic structure in comparison to group 6 bisimides and the bent metallocene isolobal analogs. Chapter 2: Under 1 atm of H2, [V(NtBu)2(PMe3)3][Al(PFTB)4], 1.10, (PFTB = perfluoro-tert-butoxide), was shown to catalytically semihydrogenate alkynes to (z)- alkenes. Synthetic and DFT studies, in combination with H2/D2 crossover and PHIP NMR experiments, indicate that H2 is activated by [1,2]-addition to 1.10 and upon the insertion of alkyne into the V-H bond of the vanadium hydrido amide A, the product alkene and 1.10 are generated by the [1,2]-alpha-NH-elimination of the alkenyl ligand. Chapter 3: A series of carbon monoxide, isocyanide, and nitrile complexes of [V(PR3)2(NtBu)2][Al(PFTB)4], (R = Me, Et) were prepared. [V(PMe3)3(NtBu)2][Al(PFTB)4], (PFTB = perfluoro-tert-butoxide) reacts with 2,6- xylylisocyanide (CNXyl) or acetonitrile to afford complexes 3.1 and 3.2. Complex 3.1 was crystallographically characterized revealing a C-N bond length of (1.152(4) A), and IR studies showed a C-N stretching frequency of 2164 cm-1. Treatment of [V(PEt3)2(NtBu)2][Al(PFTB)4] with CNXyl yielded the desired isocyanide complex in 60% yield with a C-N stretching frequency of 2156 cm-1. The desired d0 vanadium bisimido, carbonyl complex was achieved via the exposure of 1.11 to 1 atm of CO. Complex 3.4 has a C-O stretching frequency of 2015 cm-1 (CaF2 solution cell). Isotopic labeling with 13CO reveals a stretching frequency of 1970 cm-1, which confirms the assignment of the complex as a terminal eta1-CO complex and which is also implied by its NMR data in comparison to the other crystallographically characterized compounds presented here. The 13C{31P}{1H} NMR spectrum of 3.4-13C reveals a broad singlet at 228.36 ppm implying deshielding of the carbonyl carbon. This datum, in conjunction with the shielded vanadium NMR shift of -843.71 ppm, suggests pi back-bonding is operative in the bond between carbon monoxide and 1.11. This model was further confirmed by DFT analysis of the model complex [V(eta 1-CO)(PMe3)2(NtBu)2+, 3.5, which reveals that the basis of the reduced stretching frequency in 3.4 is pi back-bonding from the 2b1 and 1b2 orbitals of 1.11.
Book Synopsis Vanadium in Biological Systems by : N.D. Chasteen
Download or read book Vanadium in Biological Systems written by N.D. Chasteen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, vanadium has increasingly attracted the interest of biologists and chemists. The discovery by Henze in 1911 that certain marine ascidians accumulate the metal in their blood cells in unusually large quantities has done much to stimulate research on the role of vanadium in biology. In the intervening years, a large number of studies have been carried out to investigate the toxicity of vanadium in higher animals and to determine whether it is an essential trace element. That vanadium is a required element for a few selected organisms is now well established. Whether vanadium is essential for humans remains unclear although evidence increasingly suggests that it probably is. The discovery by Cantley in 1977 that vanadate is a potent inhibitor of ATPases lead to numerous studies of the inhibitory and stimulatory effects of vanadium on phosphate metabolizing enzymes. As a consequence vanadates are now routinely used as probes to investigate the mechanisms of such enzymes. Our understanding of vanadium in these systems has been further enhanced by the work of Tracy and Gresser which has shown striking parallels between the chemistry of vanadates and phosphates and their biological compounds. The observation by Shechter and Karlish, and Dubyak and Kleinzeller in 1980 that vanadate is an insulin mimetic agent has opened a new area of research dealing with the hormonal effects of vanadium. The first vanadium containing enzyme, a bromoperoxidase from the marine alga Ascophyllum nodosum, was isolated in 1984 by Viltner.

The complexes have been widely characterized, employing techniques such as spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical analysis. The oxidative catalytic activity of each complex on the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert -butylcatechol to 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone under aerobic conditions is presented herein.
Book Synopsis Vanadium Compounds: Biochemical and Therapeutic Applications by : Ashok K. Srivastava
Download or read book Vanadium Compounds: Biochemical and Therapeutic Applications written by Ashok K. Srivastava and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume comprise invited reviews as well as original research papers presented at the Vanadium Symposium held July 29-31, 1994. Vanadium is a trace element and its compounds have been shown to exert a wide variety of insulin-like effects including the ability to lower hyperglycemia in several experimental models of diabetes mellitus. Because of the possibility that vanadium compounds may be able to serve as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of diabetes, and possibly other diseases, this trace element has attracted the attention of biomedical researchers from a variety of fields. The Vanadium Symposium 1994 was therefore organized to facilitate exchange of ideas and increase interaction among researchers of different disciplines actively engaged in studying the biological actions of vanadium compounds. The papers are written by leading vanadium researchers and are grouped into three main sections: the chemistry, biochemical and physiological aspects, and potential therapeutic use and toxic effects of vanadium compounds. A good source of information on vanadium chemistry and biology.

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Some Vanadium(IV) Complexes written by Kamruz MD. Zaman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of vanadium(IV) thiocyanate and cyanate complexes have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic susceptibility measurements as appropriate. A variety of organic ligands including imidazole, pyrazole, pyrazine, methylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine were used in the study. The structures of VO(H20)(pzH)2(NCS)2 and V(OH)2(H2O)2(NCS)2·3(Me2pyz) have been established by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes are six-coordinate with VO(H20)(pzH)2(NCS)2 having a tetragonally distorted structure and V(OH)2(H2O)2(NCS)2·3(Me2pyz) slightly distorted octahedral structure. A vanadium(IV) sulfate complex, VO(pzH)4(SO4)·H2O, has also been prepared as a potential prescursor to vanadium(IV) thiocyanate complexes. A six coordinate structure has been proposed for it. The other complexes prepared were characterized primarily by infrared spectroscopy.
