Book excerpt: The tetravalent metal complexes of amino acid derivative containing the M-O and M-N linkage display significant and versatile biological activity. The studies are likely to be a meaningful addition in the area of work now being pursued on the reactivity of metal alkoxides. The work described in this book broadly concerns with the synthesis, characterization of several tetravalent metal complexes of amino acid substituted ligands. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by elemental analysis, IR and 1H-NMR spectra. The present research work is divided into four chapters and all four chapters end with the references. The book is contained much useful spectral data, analytical detail and solubility behavior in the form of tables. This book not only fulfils the requirements of the new synthesis but also helpful for the researchers. In future we can do biological activities such as anti-tumor, anti-ulcer, anti-carcinogenesis, anti-inflammatory, herbicidal, insecticidal and further antimicrobial activities of these silicon, tin- and organotin(IV) complexes. In case of Titanium complexes we can do the, antimicrobial studies and catalytic property.

Book excerpt: The study of PSiP pincer complexes of second- and third-row transition metals has led to the discovery of challenging bond activation chemistry as well as catalytic chemistry. While there now exists a considerable amount of literature regarding the behavior of PSiP complexes of the second- and third-row metals, comparatively little is known of the behavior of these ligands with the first-row metals. There has been a recent push toward the study of first-row transition metal chemistry in general, due to their high natural abundance and often lower toxicity when compared to their second- and third-row congeners. This document details progress toward the synthesis of a variety of novel Fe, Co and Ni complexes featuring PSiP ligation and application toward catalytic reduction of unsaturated substrates. In terms of (PSiP)Fe chemistry, considerable progress has been made toward the synthesis of novel coordination complexes, in particular the synthesis of hydride complexes of Fe. Organometallic hydride complexes are often implicated as important catalytic intermediates, and in this case a bis(dinitrogen) adduct of an Fe hydride has been identified as a highly active catalyst for the hydrogenation of olefins. Co chemistry with the same ligand has unveiled intriguing examples of both H2 and O2 bond cleavage chemistry, and again has led to an example of an alkene hydrogenation catalyst. A novel PSiP framework has been developed and applied toward chemistry of the group 10 transition metals, particularly nickel. In this regard, chemistry of complexes supported by this new ligand was found to be markedly different than that of similar complexes supported by the previous iteration of the ligand. In particular, a Ni hydride complex was successfully prepared and applied toward the selective reduction of CO2 to the formaldehyde level via hydroboration. Lastly, outside the realm of PSiP chemistry, a new monoanionic P,N-based ligand has been developed and its chemistry has been explored with respect to Fe and Co. Interesting coordination chemistry has been observed with this new ligand, and examples of reactive Fe and Co complexes have been obtained and applied toward the challenging reduction of tertiary amides to amines via catalytic hydrosilylation.

Book excerpt: This study expands our efforts to make a new class of Pt (II) compounds analogous to cisplatin and its derivatives using sterically hindered ligands. Pt compounds in this series have been synthesized using specially designed pyridine and benzimidazole ligands. These heterocycles, amide functionalized at position 2 with aryl and alkyl pendants, rapidly change their mode of coordination depending on the pH of the medium. These ligands, synthesized using condensation chemistry, also coordinate to Co(II), Ni(H), Cu(lI), and Zn(1I) generally as anionic bis-chelates through the benzimidazole nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen, creating a four-coordinate complex with the exception of an unusual trigonal bipyramidal Zn(H) complex. I H NMR temperature studies reveal that these ligands interconvert between imide and amide isomers and that electron withdrawing pendants favor amide isomers. Crystal structures of Co(II) and Ni(1I) complexes of N-( I-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)cyclohexanecarboxamide, for example, show two ligands bind per metal ion when reacted with acetate and nitrate salts. The bischelates of these Ni(1I) complexes also show expansions of their coordination spheres from four to five-coordinate. Furthermore, these Ni(II) bis-chelated complexes possess square planar or distorted 4-coordinate geometries. The synthesis and properties of several new Pt (II) complexes containing these ligands will be presented. A second generation and novel complex class containing metal-binding, linker and recognition domains is reported. Both classes of Pt complexes were obtained using a synthetic methodology which favors the cis isomers. The second generation complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2dn with lattice dimensions a = 17.7393(5) A, b = 11.4632(3) A, c = 19.3959(5) A and ~ = 99.794(3)°. These complexes have been characterized using physical methods that include X-ray crystallography, IH &13C NMR, Mass spectrometry, UV and IR spectroscopies. Complexes similar in structure to cisplatin and carboplatin show varying cytotoxic properties toward different cancer cell lines. Additionally, some of these new Pt complexes show comparable and promising cytotoxicity against prostate cancer cell lines.

Book excerpt: Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are metal-ligand compounds that extend into one, two or three dimensions via metal-ligand bonding that have found numerous technological applications, associated with their open pores and large internal surface area. The work developed in this doctoral thesis consists in the study of methodologies and systematic development of ligands or organic spacers for the synthesis of novel metal organic frameworks. An introduction to the chemistry, structural features and diverse applications of metal organic frameworks is provided in Chapter 1. The following chapter, chapter 2 involves the synthesis of gallium, indium and thallium metal organic frameworks using pyrazine, and pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid as organic spacers. The change in the pore size of the synthesized frameworks was studied in correlation with the atomic radii of the selected triel elements. Chapter 3 describes the work with the flexible, multidentate heteroelemental dipodal ligands: bis(2-pyridylthio)methane, bis(2-pyrimidylthio)methane and bipyrimidyldisulfide. These ligands were reacted with a series of copper halides or pseudo halides for the isolation of cubane clusters and polymers depending on the flexibility of the selected ligands, the stereochemical requirements of the metal center and the preferred coordination modes of the corresponding halide or pseudo halide. The fourth chapter deals with the use of 2-pyridinephosphonic acid (2PyPOH2), 4-pyridinephosphonic acid (4PyPOH2) and 4-pyridinemethylphosphonic acid (4PyCH2PO3H2) for the synthesis of aluminum and gallium phosphonate cages. The isolation of these cages was achieved under careful control of the hydrolytic conditions of the corresponding reaction media. Chapter 5, details the results of the studies with the ligand aminomethylphosphonic acid (ampa) for the construction of MOFs. The reaction of ampa with salts of Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, Ag, Cu and Pb afforded new metal-phosphonate polymers with unique structural features and includes the synthesis of a bimetallic MOF containing Ag and Cu. Finally, chapter 6 analyzes the ligand 5-pyrimidyl phosphonic acid (5-PymPO3H2) in the synthesis of homo and heteroelemental MOFs based on its possession of a phosphonate moiety for coordination and two heterocyclic nitrogen atoms at the opposite end to the PO3H2 to promote multi-site coordination. As a consequence it was possible to synthesize six coordination polymers, including a two dimensional, Cu/Ag polymer. All of the MOFs obtained throughout these studies have been characterized by X-ray crystallography along with other spectroscopic techniques, including NMR, IR, UV/Vis, and MS.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was the synthesis of N,N'-diphosphanyl-functionalized NHC ligands andtheir coordination chemistry. The novel stable and rigid tridentate N,N'-diphosphanyl-imidazol-2-ylidene was synthesized and experimental and computational information on its stability weregained. It served as a unique platform for the synthesis of novel mono-, di-, tri-, penta-, hexanuclear complexes with the coinage metals (Cu, Ag and Au), exhibiting rare structural features. The mono- and dinuclear complexes with one or two dangling P-donors provided rational access to heterotrinuclear complexes. All these coinage metal complexes have short metal-metalseparations, indicating the presence of d10-d10 interactions, and display excellent luminescentproperties. Partial or complete transmetallation of the homotrinuclear Cu or Ag complexes withPd(0) precursors led to hetero-trinuclear complexes with d10-d10 interactions. In addition to itsbridging behavior, this ligand also showed its chelating behavior in Pd or Cr(III) complexes. Thelatter displayed superior performance in ethylene oligomerization than the Cr(II) complexes andgave mostly oligomers.
