Book excerpt: Chapter 5 describes two multidentate, L3X type ligands, which feature [CN3] and [CNO2] donors, namely tris(2 pyridylseleno)methane, [Tpsem]H, and bis(2-pyridonyl)(pyridin-2-yloxy)methane, [O-poBpom]H. They have been synthesized, characterized, and employed in the synthesis of zinc and cadmium complexes. Chapter 6 describes the synthesis and structural characterization of a new [Tp] ligand featuring an allyl substituent on the central boron atom, namely [allylTpBut]Li is reported. The compound reacts steadily with CH3CH2SH under 350 nm UV light via a thiol-ene click reaction. The resulting [CH3CH2S(CH2)3TpBut]Li complex can further react with metal halide. For example, the reaction of [CH3CH2S(CH2)3TpBut]Li with ZnI2 produced [CH3CH2S(CH2)3TpBut]ZnI at room temperature. This study provides a simple model on the immobilization of [Tp] metal complexes to the polymer chains with -SH terminals.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis was the developement of new polyfunctional ligands families to study, in a first time, their coordination chemistry towards metallic centers, and in a second time, in view of the nature of the species formed their physical and/or catalytic properties. The combination of donor sites which seems the most interesting was based on the association of donors known to form strong interactions with the metals envisaged, like phosphines (P- ) or N-heterocyclic carbenes (CNHC- ), with more labile donors, like a thioether function (S- ). This association allows the formation of systems called "hemilabiles", which showed good candidates for homogenous catalytic applications. Ligands of type: diaminophosphine/thioether: P-, P-, S- have been developed. These ligands showed various coordination modes, from which a large variety of organometallic complexes were obtained. The second target ligands were of type: N-heterocyclique carbenes (NHC), bearing a thioether group on one nitrogen atom from the cycle: S, CNHC or on both nitrogen: S, CNHC, S. Their precursors have been prepared in "ecofriend" conditions and allowing a large variability. The ligands offer also various coordination modes illustrated by their silver(I) and palladium(II) complexes. The catalytic potential of these compounds has been evaluated in the Suzuki- Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and revealed a very good activity towards brominated substrates.

Book excerpt: Conducting polymers that contain metals are remarkable materials, because they have the properties of both organic backbones and metals. Depending on the position of the metal relative to the conjugated backbone, i.e. attached to or directly in the backbone, these two can couple resulting in advancement of the functionality and therefore potential applications of these types of materials. Complexes of tridentate ligands with donor atoms such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur also have a wide variety of applications. In addition, complexes of tridentate ligands have advantages of stability and control of electron density by variation of donor atoms. Therefore, conjugated polymers with tridentate ligand units will have promise for various applications and advantages in their designs. Many types of PNP ligands have been studied in the literature because the hemilabile property of the nitrogen atom promotes some catalytic reactions and gives different coordination geometries. Complexes of a PNP ligand with molybdenum and carbonyl ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized. Isomerization and conversion reactions between them were investigated as well as the coordination modes. Conducting polymers can be used as redox-active ligands and they can be used to control electron density on the metal attached to them. Synthesis and characterization of a novel polymerizable ligand 3,5-bis-EDOT-N,N-bis[2-diphenylphosphinoethyl]aniline was achieved. Related molybdenum complexes with ancillary ligands as carbonyls were also synthesized and characterized. Monomer complexes and the free ligand were electropolymerized and studied. Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride and analogous complexes have been studied extensively in the literature due to their luminescent and photochemical properties, and excited state lifetimes. Conducting polymers with similar ruthenium groups have been investigated for various applications. Synthesis of ruthenium complexes with 2,6-Bis[4-[2-(3,4-diethylenedioxy)thiophene]pyrazol-1-yl]pyridine and four different bidentate ligands were reproduced; electropolymerizations of the complexes were achieved; electrochemical, UV-Vis and luminescence studies were performed and discussed. Various complexes of copper, silver, platinum, and palladium with nitrogen and phosphorus donors have been reported for their luminescence behavior as well as their interesting structures. Model complexes of these metals with a PNP ligand have been synthesized and characterized. Absorption and luminescence behaviors as well as the coordination modes were investigated.

Book excerpt: This work focuses on the synthesis, the characterization and the catalytic evaluation in the reduction of protons into dihydrogen, of new complexes of Ni(II), Co(III), Cu(II) and Pd(II) based ligands Type thiosemicarbazone. The catalytically active species during the process of the proton reduction was studied by cyclic voltammetry and mechanisms were formulated on the basis quantum chemical calculation. The first chapter introduces the scientific context, the goals and the main objectives of this work. The second chapter concerns the synthesis and the characterization of the N2S2 ligands and their associated mononuclear complexes, Ni, Cu and Pd. The third chapter presents the synthesis and the characterization of binuclear Co and trinuclear Ni based on N2S2 ligand.Electrochemical studies of these complexes in DMF in the presence of a proton source (trifluoroacetic acid), allowed us to evaluate their catalytic efficiency. Our results show that Cu and Pd complexes have a specific irreversible wave for the reduction of protons, but decomposition is observed during electrolysis, which makes these uninteresting complexes for the reduction of protons. On the contrary, Ni and Co complexes showed an electrochemical stability and good catalytic performances. In particular, the new mononuclear Ni complex exhibits remarkable catalytic properties that rank it among the best catalysts for the reduction of protons reported in the literature. All this work provided a complete description of the electrochemical behavior of N2S2 thiosemicarbazone ligands complexed to transition metals. It allows considering future developments in improving the catalytic properties of these complexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important directions of modern bioinorganic research is the development of artificial enzymes. One pathway of enzyme modeling strategy is the study of amino acid sequences present in the active centers of metalloenzymes. Linear peptides, however, have their limitations in reconstituting the active centers of metalloenzymes, since they do not possess the well-defined three dimensional structure, therefore their structure is vulnerable towards amide nitrogen coordination/hydrolysis. Improvement of metal binding capabilities of linear peptides can be obtained by e.g. their functionalization with tripodal ligands. Tripodal compounds may provide a rigid, less flexible platform for the coordinating amino acid side chains, creating pre-organized metal binding sites. In my thesis, I present synthesis and characterization of histidine containing tripodal peptide ligands and their complex formation in presence of copper(II) and zinc(II). Solution equilibrium was studied with pH potentiometric measurements, and several spectroscopic methods were used for structural characterization (UV-Vis, CD, ESR, NMR and MS methods). Beside thermodynamic and structural characterization, enzyme mimicking catalytical properties of the complexes have also been investigated (catechol oxidation, superoxide dismutation). Our results demonstrated that tripodal peptide ligands are capable of enhancing the stability of metal-peptide complexes, and they may provide convenient structures to efficiently mimic the catalytic functions of enzymes. With thorough and systematical solution equilibrium and spectroscopic studies, we uncovered the driving forces of metal coordination, and established the impact of the tripodal structure in stability, structure and catalytic properties of the forming complexes. Our findings confirm the beneficial effect of tripodal scaffolds in peptide-type ligand-metal complexes, and emphasize the possibilities lying within tripodal peptides in the field of enzyme mimicking.

This book was released on 1999-08-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with polypyrazolylborates (scorpionates), a class of ligands known since 1966, but becoming rapidly popular with inorganic, organometallic and coordination chemists since 1986, because of their versatility and user-friendliness. They can be readily modified sterically and electronically through appropriate substitution on the pyrazole ring and on boron, and have led to a number of firsts in coordination chemistry (first stable CuCO complex, first monomeric MgR complex, and many other such firsts). Their denticity can range from two to four, their “Bite” can be adjusted, and additional coordinating sites can be added to the pyrazolyl rings. Over 170 different scorpionate ligands are known today, and some are published for the first time in this book. The author, Swiatoslaw Trofimenko, discovered and developed this ligand system and has written several reviews on the subject. The book is intended as a reference work, placing at the researcher's command practically all of the over 1500 references on the subject up, and into 1999, organized both according to the ligand type and according to the metal or metalloid being coordinated. It acquaints the reader with the special features of this ligand system and permits an assessment of what has been done in a given sub-area, and of which areas remain relatively unexplored. It presents procedures for ligand synthesis, and also covers their use in catalysis and in the modelling of biologically active substances.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally low coordinate and low oxidation state main group compounds are isolated utilizing hard anionic donors based on carbon and nitrogen based ligands. Conversely, employing anionic phosphines for this role has been essentially unexplored. In this context, this dissertation describes the synthesis of a number of main group complexes, ranging from group 13 to group 15, utilizing the bis(phosphino)borate ligand class in a supporting role. The remote anionic borate backbone renders the complexes zwitterionic and provides access to unique compounds that possess structures, and exhibit onwards reactivity, that is very different to the analogous compounds stabilized with neutral phosphines. For example, chapter two describes the stabilization of formally positively charged triel ({Ga2I4}2+) and tetrel ({GeCl}+ and {SnCl}+) fragments via common low oxidation state precursors. These structures have no precedent with neutral phosphines and represent a stable and isolable main group element source that is ready for onwards chemistry. For the group 14 compounds, upon removal of the chloride substituent the reactive tetrel centre quantitatively inserts into the ligand backbone. Zwitterionic group 15 compounds were prepared in good yields exploiting known redox chemistry and possess a pnictogen atom (Pn = P, As) in the unusual +1 oxidation state (Chapter 3). The anionic backbone is shown to be critical in accessing the coordination chemistry of these compounds as there are very few examples of the traditional cationic variants being used in subsequent transformations. Both pnictogen proligands form isolable coordination compounds with chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and iron carbonyl reagents (Chapter 4) while rhodium, palladium, and mercury complexes are also isolated with the phosphorus derivative (Chapter 5). This diverse range of products represents the first such series of transition metal complexes for these types of Pn(I) compounds. The highlight of the thesis is the discovery that the phosphorus proligand acts as a 4-electron -type ligand to two gold, cobalt, or platinum centres simultaneously. Such coordination chemistry is unprecedented and provides the first experimental evidence for the P(I) compound to be described as a phosphanide-type bonding arrangement. These novel structures further underscore the importance of the borate backbone in synthesizing compounds that have otherwise not been observed. Throughout the thesis all of the compounds were fully characterized using a range of solution and solid-state techniques, including single crystal X-ray crystallography, allowing for a detailed data comparison.

Book excerpt: Methods for the synthesis of complex compounds under the conditions of gas-phase reactions, oxidative dissolution of zero-valent metals in non-aqueous media, and in the solid phase have been developed. These methods have become the basis of a new field in synthetic chemistry - the direct synthesis of coordination and organometallic compounds from zero-valent metals. PParticular aspects of the above problem have been described in a series of reviews and monographs. However, on the whole these main parts of the direct synthesis of metal complexes has not been dealt with in the review and monograph publications on coordination chemistry.-
