Book excerpt: Over 250 molecular species have been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) via radioastronomy through the observation and assignment of rotational spectra. While relevant to the understanding of the chemical processes of the ISM, the presence of organic molecules in this environment has relevance to astrobiology regarding the origins of organic components critical for life on Earth. The McMahon/Woods group seeks to further develop the library of known celestial molecules by the synthesis and analysis of species theorized to be part of astrochemical systems. Our group has synthesized seven isomeric organic nitriles hypothesized to be present in the ISM and the atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Additionally, these nitriles are isomers of the aromatic heterocycle, pyridine, which has yet to be identified in the ISM. Synthetic methodology for the production and isolation of samples is presented. The isolation of pure samples of these reactive nitriles enables measurement of their laboratory rotational spectra, which are the critical data needed to search for these species in the cosmos via radioastronomy. Impact and importance of the highlighted species to the field of molecular spectroscopy and radioastronomy will be discussed

Book excerpt: In the course of editing this volume I discovered that I am temper amentally unsuited to the task, an impediment that in no small way accounts for the fact that its publication is later than I would have hoped or anticipated. I am, at heart, a pedant, particularly with respect to the use and abuse of the English language. Many of my scientific colleagues are a good deal less punctilious; they take the reasonable view that if the message is clear, the manner of expression is unimportant. Experience has taught me that what is clear to the author is often quite unclear to the reader unless the author takes the trouble to express himself with precision. I have also found that most scientists are unwilling to devote to the presentation of their results the care that they lavish on obtaining them. But I found myself slipping beyong this often justifiable complaint into a state of inexcusable self-righteousness. It began innocently enough. Conscious of the need for speed, I read the first two or three texts with murmurs of approval, and scribbled 'no changes needed' on the title page of the copy. Then I began to notice one or two grammatical mistakes, plural verbs with singular nouns, mixtures of tenses, and so on, which had to be corrected; not serious, I told myself, a matter only of changing a word here, retyping a line there. Quickly I sank deeper.

By synthesizing, isolating, and spectroscopically characterizing molecules of this type, driving forces underlying many chemical processes can be exploited. In Chapter 1, I describe the investigation of the alkylated carbon chain Me-C3-Me. The structure and photochemistry of this surprisingly complex substituted propargylene requires the combination of nontrivial synthesis, elaborate computational analysis, and IR, UV-vis, and EPR spectroscopies to fully understand. The second chapter details my contributions to a project originating from a matrix-isolation study in the lab of Rui Fausto and facilitated on site at Wisconsin by Dr. Cláudio Nunes. Our work together involved probing a hydrogen-migration reaction of an aldehyde hydrogen to a nitrene that is believed to occur through a tunneling process. Much like the matrix-isolation study in Chapter 1, this project involves synthesis of precursors to the nitrene species, matrix isolation, and IR, UV/vis, and EPR spectroscopies. The third chapter shifts gears from low-temperature studies of reactive intermediates to the kinetic study of thermally activated Bergman cyclization reactions using in situ IR spectroscopy. Chapter 4 describes a body of work in collaboration with the Zwier research group at Purdue University. In line with our focus on astrochemistry, the Zwier group is interested in sophisticated spectroscopic investigations of the photochemistry and discharge-driven chemistry of chemical systems relevant to the atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Their interest in expanding their spectroscopic search to nitrile functionality (particularly relevant to chemistry on Titan) necessitated the synthesis of a small family of unsaturated nitriles. Chapter 5 introduces my experiences in discipline based education research that I have pursued through my internship with the Delta program. In this project, I implemented a flipped classroom in a general chemistry class at Madison College and assessed the cognitive skills engaged by the students. I have found consistency between my research and educational interests by remaining grounded in crosscutting concepts and emphasizing them in the presentation of my research and in the classroom. By maintaining this focus, a firm foundation can be built from which knowledge can be constructed and discovery can flourish.
