Book excerpt: This volume contains an eclectic collection of 22 papers on liquid crystalline polymers presented at the Sixth Polymer Workshop, in the series sponsored by the European Science Foundation, entitled: 'Liquid Crystal Polymer Systems', in Gentofte, Denmark, 12-14 September 1983. Since a contribution to this volume was strictly voluntary, and in some cases represents a considerably expanded version of that which was presented, it is strictly speaking not correct to term this a 'proceedings'. A description of the aims and purposes of the European Science Foundation with respect to the polymer area has been presented in: Shell Polymers, Vol. 5, No.2, pp. 34-35, 1981. The papers given here represent a cross-section of current research interests in liquid crystalline polymers in the areas of theory, synthesis, characterization, structure-property relationships and applications. At least some of the current interest is motivated by attempts to practically exploit the novel properties of these materials in the developing tech nologies of high strength fibres and advanced materials for constructional purposes, but also for functional materials in the areas of information retrieval, electronics and opto-electronics applications. Book excerpt: The design of novel, complex and tailored macromolecules that present and combine unique features such as stimuli responsive, self-assembly and hierarchical architectures for applications in fields ranging from healthcare, energy to engineering, is one of the major challenges that need to be addressed by a polymer chemist. One way to address this, is through the combination of monomers with desirable roles such as stimuli responsive (liquid crystalline), solubility (polar or non-polar), targeting and payload release functional monomers. Polymerization techniques such as controlled and living polymerization enables the regulation of the connectivity and composition of these diverse monomers in the synthesis of block, random or gradient copolymers. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) majorly employed in most of the work in this thesis, is a robust living polymerization technique which delivers highly functionalized block or random copolymers that serves as nanotemplates (chapter 2), nanoporous membranes for separation (chapter 3), photonic crystals (chapter 4), shape memory devices (chapter 5), stimuli responsive optical materials (chapter 6), drug delivery vehicles and imaging agents (chapter 7). This dissertation focuses on a new platform for the synthesis of novel liquid crystalline polymers, their architectures, morphologies, properties and applications. The control of composition and polymer architecture is key in tuning the properties of copolymers for desired applications. Side-chain Liquid Crystalline Copolymers (SCLPs) which combines the basic properties of conventional polymers and liquid crystals, exhibit low viscosity, unique self-assembly as compared to linear copolymer counterparts due to reduced entanglements. Liquid crystalline block copolymers (LCBCPs) that comprises of brush-like semicrystalline or amorphous units and comblike side chain liquid crystalline moieties will be the center of focus in this dissertation in chapter 2, chapter 4 and part of chapter 7 due to formation of hierarchical structures as a result of two competing processes: (a) microphase separation by the copolymer superstructure and (b) orientational ordering by liquid crystalline mesogens. This supramolecular cooperative assembly leads into a well-defined interface with liquid crystalline ordering in the range of 3 -10nm nanostructures and block microphase segregation of 10- 100nm microstructures. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the understanding of liquid crystalline brush-like block copolymers self-assembly, phase behavior and morphology as a function of copolymer composition and molecular weight. Here, I describe the synthesis and characterization of norbornene functionalized side chain liquid crystalline brush-like block copolymers, where one of the blocks comprises of cyanobiphenyl liquid crystalline mesogens with twelve methylene spacer and the other semi-crystalline polylactide (PLA) side chains. The self-assembly of these LC block copolymers into liquid crystalline mesophase provides the handle for magnetic alignment of the formed LCBBCs superstructures (chapter 7). The displayed morphologies such as hexagonally packed PLA cylinders in the LC matrix is put into use in the creation of functional nanoporous membranes for water purification and heavy metal sequestering (chapter 3). The high molecular weight of this LCBBCs assemble into photonic crystals of large domain sizes with different optical properties (chapter 4). In the second part of the dissertation we explore harnessing of stimuli responsive functional cholesteric random copolymers for multifunctional elastomeric platform and optical materials that cover a wide range from visible to near infrared (NIR) of electromagnetic spectrum. Overall, understanding the structure-properties of these liquid crystalline polymers leads to various applications such as membranes for separation, optics, sensors and drug delivery.

Book excerpt: Modern society makes increasing demands for novelty in materials and their properties which are ever more exacting. Crystalline polymers are in the forefront of this demand and improvements are constantly occurring across the entire range from existing materials of high tonnage to novel materials with application in information technology. The developments recorded in this volume reflect this situation. Chapter 1 is a comprehensive review of the polymer PHB, poly(hydroxybutyrate), which is new to industrial manufacturing but is a naturally occurring substance. It has potentially valuable properties but has excited interest especially because it is biodegradable. It may, therefore, provide one means of reducing environmental pollution. Improvements in existing materials, beyond those which are ob tainable by optimization of known variables, are most likely to come from understanding of structure-property relationships. Polymer is able to make effective science has now reached the stage where it synthesis of information from complementary techniques, leading to rapidly deepening understanding. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are all con cerned with technical developments which are contributing substan tially to this synthesis. The possibilities of electron microscopy, specifically the characterization of lamellar microstructure, have been transformed by permanganic etching. Now real organization (which can be very different from what had previously been inferred) can be used as a basis for explaining polymeric properties. In Chapter 3, Mitchell and Windle give a critical account of the assessment of orientation in liquid crystalline polymers, a rapidly developing new field in which they have played a leading part.

This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis is on a broad description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects, the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Thus, an additional textbook will not be needed in order to understand the experiments. The 5th edition contains numerous changes: In recent years, so-called functional polymers which have special electrical, electronic, optical and biological properties, have gained more and more in interest. This textbook was therefore supplemented by recipes which describe the synthesis of these materials in a new chapter "Functional polymers". Together with new experiments in chapter 3,4 and 5 the book now contains more than 120 recipes that describe a wide range of macromolecules. From the reviews of recent editions: "This is an excellent book for all polymer chemists engaged in synthesis research studies and education. It is educationally sound and has excellent laboratory synthetic examples. The fundamentals are well done for the teaching of students and references are resonably up-to-date. As in previous issues, there are sections dealing with an introduction; structure and nomenclature; methods and techniques for synthesis, characterization, processing and modification of polymers. ....The authors have noted the following changes from previous editions- a new section on correlations of structure, morphology and properties; revision and enlargement of other property and characterization procedures; additional new experiments such as controlled radical polymerization; enzymatic polymerizations; microelmulsions; and electrical conducting polymers. This is a high quality textbook at a reasonable price and should be considered as a suitable reference for all engaged in synthetic areas of polymer research." (Eli M. Pearce, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY, USA)
