Block and graft copolymers are the most demanded advanced materials since they display combined physical and mechanical properties. Because of their diverse macromolecular structures, they may possess novel characteristics required for many high-tech applications. Therefore, engineering macromolecular architectures is one of the major goals in polymer chemistry. Controlled polymerization methods appear to be the most powerful and versatile tools in achieving this goal. in the present work, macromolecular chains of various chemical compositions were ~ assembled in original topologies by combination of Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) or Ring-opening Polymerization (ROP) with photoinduced radical or radical promoted cationic polymerizations. These macromolecular architectures involve block, graft, block-graft, and brush type copolymers as well as miktoarm star copolymers and hyper-branched polymers... For this purpose, end-chain, mid-chain or side-chain mono- or bi- amino- or N;N- dimethylamino- functional precursor polymers were prepared either by A TRP or ROP. Subsequently, these prepolymers served as macromolecular co-initiators in photoinduced radical or promoted cationic polymerizations. For the preparation of diblock copolymers, N,N-dimethylaniline end-functional polystyrenes (PSt) with well-defined structures and low polydispersities were synthesized by A TRP of styrene in bulk at 11 O0C using 4-( dimethylamino )benzyl 4- (bromomethyl) benzoate as initiator in conjunction with a cuprous complex, Cu(I)Br/bipyridine. These polym'ers were further used in block copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) via photoinduced radical and radical promoted cationic polymerization routes, respectively, as represented by (1) and (2). in the former case, macroradical generation was achieved with benzophenone sensitizer by photoexcitation followed by hydrogen abstraction from amino end groups. A visible light initiating system has been utilized in the radical promoted cationic polymerization of CHO. The system involves a xanthene dye (Erythrosin B) as the sensitizer, an aromatic N;N-dimethylamino group and diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate as the radical source and radical oxidizer, respectively. While pure block copolymers were obtained in the free radical route, the free radical promoted cationic polymerization yielded both block and homopolymers...

Book excerpt: This study describes the synthesis and characterization of mid- and end-chain functional telechelics, macromonomers and their use in preparing soluble and processable comb-like conjugated polymers, such as poly(phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs). Well-defined polystyrene (PSt) or poly(-caprolactone) (PCL) based polymers containing mid- or end-chain dibromobenzene moieties were prepared by controlled polymerization methods, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) or ring opening polymerization (ROP). The reaction of these polymers with amino- or aldehyde- functionalized monoboronic acids, in Suzuki type couplings, yielded the corresponding desired telechelics. Further functionalization was achieved by condensation reactions of these polymers with appropriate low molecular weight aldehydes or amines to form azomethine linkages. As a result, mid- or end-chain amino-, aldehyde-, pyrrolyl-, naphthyl- or hydroxy-functional telechelics were obtained. These telechelics may serve as useful macromonomers in the preparation of various macromolecular structures displaying distinct characteristics. PPV derivatives bearing well-defined PCL or PSt as lateral susbstituents were synthesized by following a Wittig polycondensation using dialdehyde functional telechelic macromonomers in combination with bis(triphenylphosphonium) salts in the presence of potassium tert- butoxide. The resulting colored PPVs are soluble in common organic solvents at room temperature just as the starting macromonomers. They emit blue and exhibit very high relative and absolute photoluminescence quantum yield. Thus, excellent solubility combined with the optical properties favours the use of these materials in the design of highly efficient light emitting-diodes (LEDs) and in many applications in various areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-healing is a well-known phenomenon in nature: a broken bone merges after some time and if skin is damaged, the wound will stop bleeding and heals again. This concept can be mimicked in order to create polymeric materials with the ability to regenerate after they have suffered degradation or wear. Already realized applications are used in aerospace engineering, and current research in this fascinating field shows how different self-healing mechanisms proven successful by nature can be adapted to produce even more versatile materials. The book combines the knowledge of an international panel of experts in the field and provides the reader with chemical and physical concepts for self-healing polymers, including aspects of biomimetic processes of healing in nature. It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress in polymer science is revealed in the chapters of Polymer Science: A Comprehensive Reference, Ten Volume Set. In Volume 1, this is reflected in the improved understanding of the properties of polymers in solution, in bulk and in confined situations such as in thin films. Volume 2 addresses new characterization techniques, such as high resolution optical microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and other procedures for surface and interface characterization. Volume 3 presents the great progress achieved in precise synthetic polymerization techniques for vinyl monomers to control macromolecular architecture: the development of metallocene and post-metallocene catalysis for olefin polymerization, new ionic polymerization procedures, and atom transfer radical polymerization, nitroxide mediated polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer systems as the most often used controlled/living radical polymerization methods. Volume 4 is devoted to kinetics, mechanisms and applications of ring opening polymerization of heterocyclic monomers and cycloolefins (ROMP), as well as to various less common polymerization techniques. Polycondensation and non-chain polymerizations, including dendrimer synthesis and various "click" procedures, are covered in Volume 5. Volume 6 focuses on several aspects of controlled macromolecular architectures and soft nano-objects including hybrids and bioconjugates. Many of the achievements would have not been possible without new characterization techniques like AFM that allowed direct imaging of single molecules and nano-objects with a precision available only recently. An entirely new aspect in polymer science is based on the combination of bottom-up methods such as polymer synthesis and molecularly programmed self-assembly with top-down structuring such as lithography and surface templating, as presented in Volume 7. It encompasses polymer and nanoparticle assembly in bulk and under confined conditions or influenced by an external field, including thin films, inorganic-organic hybrids, or nanofibers. Volume 8 expands these concepts focusing on applications in advanced technologies, e.g. in electronic industry and centers on combination with top down approach and functional properties like conductivity. Another type of functionality that is of rapidly increasing importance in polymer science is introduced in volume 9. It deals with various aspects of polymers in biology and medicine, including the response of living cells and tissue to the contact with biofunctional particles and surfaces. The last volume is devoted to the scope and potential provided by environmentally benign and green polymers, as well as energy-related polymers. They discuss new technologies needed for a sustainable economy in our world of limited resources. Provides broad and in-depth coverage of all aspects of polymer science from synthesis/polymerization, properties, and characterization methods and techniques to nanostructures, sustainability and energy, and biomedical uses of polymers Provides a definitive source for those entering or researching in this area by integrating the multidisciplinary aspects of the science into one unique, up-to-date reference work Electronic version has complete cross-referencing and multi-media components Volume editors are world experts in their field (including a Nobel Prize winner)

Book excerpt: In this study, block copolymer synthesis was evaluated by combining the redox polymerization technique and different polymerization techniques. By combining such different polymerization techniques, block copolymer synthesis has recently become an important part of polymer synthesis and polymer technology. The block/graft copolymers synthesized by combining such different techniques contribute greatly to macromolecular engineering. In today,Äôs polymer synthesis, copolymer synthesis is of great interest in polymer technologies especially by using controlled radical polymerization and different polymerization techniques together. The success achieved in copolymer synthesis by using different polymerization techniques such as ATRP-ROP, RAFT-ROP, and ATRP-RAFT on the same step or different steps was achieved by combining redox polymerization with moderate polymerization conditions and controlled radical polymerization techniques as well.

Schmidt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, Bernhard Schmidt describes his research into two fields in the chemical sciences: supramolecular and macromolecular chemistry. Schmidt first investigates cyclodextrins (CDs), which are well known for the formation of supramolecular host/guest complexes with hydrophobic molecules in aqueous solution. Schmidt then also examines reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization as a well-suited toll for the synthesis of water-soluble end-functionalized polymers. The author skillfully combines both concepts as a powerful tool to access reversibly forming macromolecular architectures. The novel methods and architectures presented in this work are highly interesting from both a fundamental point of view as well as a basis for the design of efficient drug release systems. The work in this thesis has led to a number of publications in top peer-reviewed journals.

Book excerpt: The thesis work is split into five major chapters, viz. metal catalyzed polymerization of 1,3 butadiene, various protocols for synthesis of Poly(vinylidenefluoride) block copolymers, Copper (0) metal mediated iodine degenerative transfer controlled radical photo emulsion VDF homopolymerization, synthesis of 2,3,3,3 - tetrafluoropropene (TFP) homo, random and block copolymers, metal catalyzed interconversion of inactive perfluorohalides. Controlled radical polymerization of 1,3 butadiene was successfully achieved by using various group 8 and group 10 metal complexes such as the Fe,Ni, Run+1X3/(Nitrogen, Oxygen, Halide, Phosphine) ligand complexes. First instance of photo mediated polymerization of 1,3 butadiene were developed for Fe-complexes. A library of complex PVDF block copolymer architecture were synthesized by Mn2(CO)10 catalyzed quantitative activation of the PVDF-CF2-CH2-I and PVDF-CH2-CF2-I chain ends, and their properties were studied. Metal-free organo photocatalyst mediated controlled radical polymerization of the second block in PVDF block copolymers was achieved, and the kinetics of polymerization and chain end activation were studied in detail. Novel poly(TFP) homopolymer, random and block copolymer with VDF architectures were synthesized by Cu(0), Mtx(CO)y catalyzed radical polymerization. Rational selection of parameters such as the nature of the solvent, temperature, metal ligand complexes and various additives was evaluated to optimize the kinetic parameters for successful interconversion of RFCl, RFBr and RFI substrates.

It has continued to grow to a subject of major importance and has been a source of interest to both academic and industrialist alike. The wide spectrum of structures and properties available in the statistical copolymer has made this a fruitful field of exploration, but one particular and more restricted form which has held its own fascination for many is the limiting case of the strictly alternating copolymer. This is formed, in the ideal situation, when two monomers in a reaction mixture add consecutively to create a polymer chain with a regular {ABABAB} structure, irrespective of the monomer feed ratio. When this happens the resulting copolymer will always have the same composition, a feature which can be advantageous but also somewhat restrictive, as the ability to vary the properties is then limited. Within a series entitled Speciality Polymers it seems appropriate then to deal with this subject, particularly as no previous attempt has been made to draw together the various facets of alternating copolymerization into one volume. It also seems timely to present a more unified picture of the subject which will also illustrate the progress made.
