Book excerpt: Semiconductor nanostructures under irradiation catalyze the mineralization of organic dyes in solution. To improve the efficiency of this process, many novel nano-heterostructures have been fabricated using a variety of synthetic methods, however, many of these methods require management of difficult to control parameters, days of aging, and dangerous or expensive precursors to synthesize nanomaterials that may lack uniformity, recoverability, or efficiency. In this thesis, 1D CuO-TaO_x -NiO_y nano-heterostructures are fabricated using a combination of thermal oxidation and DC magnetron sputter deposition. CuO nanowires were synthesized by thermal oxidation, and TaO_x and NiO_y were deposited onto CuO nanowire template by sputter deposition of the metal followed by thermal annealing in air. A systematic study was done on the effect of sputter deposition parameters and annealing temperature for Ta. The completed heterostructure was evaluated by its performance in the degradation of various organic dyes. CuO-TaO_x -NiO_y nanowires with thin (10 nm thick) layers in methylene blue (concentration = 20 mg/L) with a catalyst dose of 1.0 g/L were found to be the most efficient catalyst. Rationally engineered semiconductor nano-heterostructures can be applied in environmental remediation and reduce the amount of pollution from industrial waste effluent.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, East China University of Science and Technology (-), language: English, abstract: Considerable effort has been made to design, fabricate, and manipulate nanostructured materials by innovative approaches. The precise control of nanoscale structures will pave the way not only for elucidating unique size/shape dependent physicochemical properties but also for realizing new applications in science and technology. Nanotechnology offers unprecedented opportunities for improving our daily lives and the environment in which we live. This thesis mainly describes recent progress in the design, fabrication, and modification of nanostructured semiconductor materials for environmental applications. The scope of this thesis covers TiO2, Bi2O3 and BiOCl materials, focusing particularly on TiO2-based nanostructures (e.g., pure, doped, coupled, mesoporous, hierarchically porous, and ordered mesoporous TiO2). Mesoporous titania is of particular interest since this class of materials possesses well-defined porosity and large specific surface areas. For photocatalytic degradation of organics, these desirable properties are anticipated to improve the efficiency. So in the first part of work, I have synthesized the mesoporous titania by using poly ethylene glycol as a template in dilute acetic acid aqueous solution by hydrothermal process and investigated the effect of PEG molecular weights and thermal treatment on the resultant structure and photocatalytic activity. When the molecular weights of PEG vary from 600 to 20,000, the particle sizes of mesoporous-TiO2 structure decrease from 15.1 to 13.3 nm and mean pore sizes increase from 6.9-10.6 nm. The activities of these mesoporous-TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by using PEG are evaluated and compared with Degussa P-25 using chloro-phenol as a testing compound. [...]

Book excerpt: Copper oxide nanowires are source of a great interest in the scientific community due to numerous properties and the wide range of possible applications of this nanoscale material. In this project, CuO nanowire growth was achieved using an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) reactor via dry oxidation at various temperatures and gas flow rates. The growth of nanowires was successful, when the substrate was a thin copper foil. In our experiments, copper oxide nanowires formed at 600 oC with ramp rate = 30 C/min. Afterwards, transport of nanowires on p+Si(001) was studied using an ultrasonicator. The best results of transfer were found when the ultrasonication lasted twenty seconds. In this case, 1.82 ml of solution with nanowires was dropped on the surface of silicon, which was successfully covered with copper oxide nanowires. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum at 300 K consisted of a broad peak centered at 419 nm. Moreover, time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) PL measurements were taken at room temperature (RT) for 400 nm emission wavelength over a time span of 50 ns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines many of the techniques involved in materials development and characterization for photoelectrochemical (PEC) – for example, proper metrics for describing material performance, how to assemble testing cells and prepare materials for assessment of their properties, and how to perform the experimental measurements needed to achieve reliable results towards better scientific understanding. For each technique, proper procedure, benefits, limitations, and data interpretation are discussed. Consolidating this information in a short, accessible, and easy to read reference guide will allow researchers to more rapidly immerse themselves into PEC research and also better compare their results against those of other researchers to better advance materials development. This book serves as a “how-to” guide for researchers engaged in or interested in engaging in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. PEC water splitting is a rapidly growing field of research in which the goal is to develop materials which can absorb the energy from sunlight to drive electrochemical hydrogen production from the splitting of water. The substantial complexity in the scientific understanding and experimental protocols needed to sufficiently pursue accurate and reliable materials development means that a large need exists to consolidate and standardize the most common methods utilized by researchers in this field.

Book excerpt: This book explains the use of nanocrystalline semiconductors in the harvesting of energy from solar light. It introduces promising methodology and technology which may help to increase the efficiency of light harvesting – one of the major challenges on the way toward sustainable energy generation. The book starts with a general introduction to the photochemistry of semiconductor nanocrystals. In the introductory chapter, the author also provides a frank and critical discussion on perspectives and limitations of the photocatalytic processes for solar light conversion including a historical account on semiconductor photocatalysis. He discusses that (and also why) it is a long way from laboratory prototypes to real sustainable technologies. The following chapters outline the conversion of solar light energy in semiconductor nanophotocatalysis on the one hand, and to (electric) energy in nanocrystalline semiconductor-based solar cells on the other hand. Topics addressed include nanophotocatalytic hydrogen production, artificial photosynthesis, quantum-dot sensitized liquid-junction and bulk heterojunction solar cells. Perspectives and opportunities, but also bottlenecks and limitations are discussed and the novel systems compared with established technology, such as classical silicon solar cells. While readers in this way learn to understand the basics and get introduced to the current research in the field, the final chapter provides them with the necessary knowledge about methodology, both in synthesis and characterization of semiconductor nanophotocatalysts and semiconductor nanomaterials, including examples for the practice of photocatalytic experiments and the studies of semiconductor-based solar cells.
